Jumbos uproot electric poles set up to bring power supply to village

Hazaribag: A herd of a dozen elephants destroyed 23 electricity poles at Simrajra village in Barkagaon block on Saturday night. These poles were meant to supply power to this remote area, which has been living in darkness since independence.
A report in TOI on July 8 prompted Hazaribag deputy commissioner Shashi Prakash Singh to instruct the department concerned to set up around 250 poles on the foothills of seven hills from the main road to this village, which is approximately 6 km long.
Overhead wires were also stretched to light up this village before Independence Day. However, on Saturday night, elephants destroyed 23 poles set up by the electricity department at Simrajra village, causing significant losses to the department.
A junior engineer of the electricity department, Pradeep Prajapati, said that the work of re-erecting all the electricity poles has begun so that electricity can be provided to the village as soon as possible.
The elephants have also damaged many houses in villages like Chora, Tongri, and Bartua. He said, "We will set up poles again on a war footing."
Local mukhiya representative Mahendra Manjhi said that villagers were in celebratory mood and eagerly waiting for the power supply to start before elephants damaged poles.

Railways launches cleanliness drive
Patna: The East Central Railway (ECR) launched an intensive cleanliness drive under the banner of 'Swachh Rail, Swachh Bharat' ahead of Independence Day . The campaign, which began on Sunday, will run intensively till August 15 across all five divisions of the ECR, focusing on a cleaner railway environment. According to the ECR's chief public relations officer (CPRO) Saraswati Chandra, this initiative covers a wide spectrum of railway infrastructure, including station premises, workshops, railway colonies and other railway establishments. "The goal is to enhance cleanliness standards and raise awareness among the common people," he said. As part of the campaign, every railway staff member is being administered an oath pledging their commitment to maintain cleanliness in and around the workplace and surroundings. "Cleanliness is not a one-day activity, but it is a continuous responsibility. Through this oath, we aim to build a strong culture of hygiene among our staff," Danapur DRM Vinod Kumar said. Adding a cultural and educational dimension to the campaign, railway artists have been mobilised to perform street plays across railway premises. "These plays are focusing on behaviour change, community participation and the long-term benefits of cleanliness," the CPRO said. ECR's initiative aligns with the broader national campaign 'Azadi Ka Jashn, Swachhata Ka Sankalp' mission. "The railway authorities have also urged passengers and residents to actively participate and support the cleanliness mission on the eve of Independence Day," Chandra said.
