British tourist's son defends Crete hotel staff after pool death

Telegrapha day ago
The family of a British woman who died in a swimming pool at a hotel in Crete have defended members of hotel staff who were arrested.
Margaret Winifred Davies, 78, lost consciousness in the pool of the five-star Knossos Royal in Hersonissos, on the north coast of the island.
Initial reports claimed a 21-year-old lifeguard was absent from her post at the time. She was arrested along with the hotel's director, 51, and its general manager, 41, by Greek police and questioned on suspicion of manslaughter by negligence. They were later released without charge.
The British tourist's relatives said there were in fact two lifeguards on duty and both of them helped Mrs Davies. She was pulled from the water and received first aid before being taken to hospital, but was pronounced dead.
The family insisted the hotel staff were in no way at fault for her death. They confirmed that staff were questioned by police but said no charges had been laid.
'Our 78-year-old mother passed away tragically while on holiday in Crete at the Knossos Royal hotel. While we would have liked to grieve in private, we feel compelled to address some of the misleading reporting that has been published in recent days,' said Paul Davies, her son.
'We are awaiting the results of the autopsy so cannot comment on the cause of death, but we would like to make clear that we do not hold the hotel responsible. Winifred got out of the pool herself and was assisted by two on-duty lifeguards.
'We would like to thank the hotel and the British consulate for their support. We ask that our privacy be respected at this painful time.'
In a statement, the Knossos Royal expressed its 'sincere condolences and deepest sympathy' to the family and denied any wrongdoing.
'From the very first moment we were informed about the guest's discomfort, the hotel management responded to the incident with complete responsibility, seriousness, and professionalism, providing immediate assistance, support, and every possible medical aid to her. This response was recognised and appreciated by the family.'
Under investigation
Hotel managers said the matter was under investigation and the cause of death would be clarified when a forensic report was released.
'According to current medical assessments, the guest's death is attributed to pathological causes, with no indication of external negligence,' their statement said.
The hotel occupies a prime position on the northern coast of Crete. Its website says the venue boasts several swimming pools, which are 'designed to appeal to all senses and play an important role in the resort's architectural structure'.

Swimmer in his 20s who died after getting into trouble at UK beauty spot is pictured – as his brother pays tribute

A SWIMMER in his 20s has died after getting into serious trouble at a popular UK beauty spot. Ezra Tilf was rushed to hospital after being rescued from the Norfolk Broads on Tuesday night before passing away. 2 Emergency services were called to Horstead Mill at around 6.30pm following reports of a young man getting into difficulties in the River Bure. Ezra was pulled from the water as shocked onlookers are believed to have tried to resuscitate him before emergency services arrived. HM Coastguard confirmed rescue teams from Winterton and Bacton attended the scene in Mill Road, alongside Hemsby Inshore Rescue Service. Ezra was taken to hospital but passed away shortly after arriving. His older brother Jacob has now posted a touching tribute on Facebook. It reads: "To anyone who knew my bestest little baby brother he passed away last night. "I never thought I'd ever have to say goodbye Ezra. "So please everyone who is thinking it's fun to go to the rivers always be extra careful please as this could happen to anyone. "Rest in peace brother I f***ing miss and love you." One comment under the Facebook post described Ezra as "lovely' with another saying "he had the purest heart'. Norfolk Police have said the death is not being treated as suspicious. It is believed Ezra got into trouble when he was playing underneath the mill's bridge - a notoriously dangerous and fast-flowing spot.

Brit schoolgirl, 13, drowned while snorkelling with dad at Florida theme park – as tributes pour in to ‘beautiful soul'

A BRITISH schoolgirl, 13, drowned while snorkelling at a theme park in Florida, an inquest heard. Anna Beaumont, from St Fagans, Cardiff, tragically died on a family holiday while swimming at the Discovery Cove theme park in Orlando. The schoolgirl was spotted "floating and unresponsive" in the natural-style pool on May 28 last year. An inquest, held in Pontypridd, heard the teen had been snorkelling with her dad Peter. He left her side to go and see her younger brother but he heard a lifeguard whistle around ten minutes later. Anna was discovered in the water without her snorkel, and with blood and water in her mask. She was rushed to Arnold Palmer Hospital but sadly did not regain consciousness. Coroner Kerrie Burge said Anna died the following day, and a medical cause of death was given as immersion in water. The inquest heard keen rower Anna was a "strong swimmer with no current health concerns." She had previously been diagnosed with childhood absence epilepsy in July 2016 after she was seizure free for three years. The coroner said: "Whilst a small risk of seizures remained, Anna had not experienced any. "There is no evidence to confirm how Anna came to be unresponsive in the water. "She was not seen to have a seizure or to encounter any difficulties and there was no medical evidence of seizure activity during her time in hospital or at post mortem examination." The coroner concluded: "Anna died following immersion in water. "It is not possible to establish, on the balance of probabilities, how Anna came to be in difficulties in the water." 1 is your go-to destination for the best celebrity news, real-life stories, jaw-dropping pictures and must-see video. British woman missing in Greece ‘also disappeared in 2020'

A British woman who went missing from a beach in northern Greece has disappeared before, according to local reports. Michele Ann Joy Bourda, 59, vanished while her husband was sleeping on a sunbed on Ofrynio beach near Kavala last Friday. She had been swimming at about 12pm and was last seen wearing a two-piece swimsuit featuring rhinestones, yellow beach shoes and sunglasses with red bone frames, according to the British embassy in Greece. Some witnesses have claimed they saw a woman matching her description swimming in deep water, while another claimed to have seen her walking away from the scene. But local reports are now saying it is not the first time she has gone missing. They claim her husband, thought to be of Greek origin, asked local shop owners if they had seen her when he awoke on the beach and noticed she was gone. He reportedly told them that she had previously disappeared in London in 2020 after being sacked from her job and was subsequently found by police. The Telegraph has approached the Metropolitan Police for comment. Lifeline Hellas, a Greek missing persons charity, issued an alert on Saturday after the police were unable to find Mrs Bourda. The charity's alert said: 'Her life is in danger. If you know anything, contact the Silver Alert service, 24 hours a day, at the national SOS line 1065.' Straight blonde hair Mrs Bourda is described as having straight blonde hair down to her shoulders and hazel eyes, and as being 5ft 6in tall and of slim build. The Hellenic Coastguard is reportedly conducting a search operation at sea and investigating reports that her belongings were left on the beach. The British embassy in Greece shared a notice on Facebook which read: 'Michele Ann Bourda went missing on Aug 1 2025 at the beach of Ofrynio near Kavala. 'On the day she went missing, she was wearing a swimsuit with decorative stones, yellow water shoes and red plastic sunglasses. Her life is in danger.' Last month, a 60-year-old British tourist went missing while on holiday in Greece. He was last seen in Tristomo, a village on the island of Karpathos, and his car was abandoned in 38C heat.
