A talented teen team is celebrating gold after months of focused training.
Members of Aquagold Artistic Swimming Club are celebrating success at last weekend's Artistic Swimming New Zealand South Island Championships, held at Selwyn Aquatics Centre in Christchurch.
The quartet of Mila Bareiter, Emma Horan, Sasha Luke-Tychinskaya and Catalina Costa Barnett won gold in the dolphin combo section for the 13-16 age category.
Sasha Luke-Tychinskaya won the figures competition in the 12-16 age group.
Mila Bareiter claimed silver in the dolphin 10-12 age category.
Club president Phyll Esplin said she was very proud of the girls and how hard they had worked over the past couple of months.
She said the team had been together only five months and she credited coaches Onevai Pita and Pauline Dusseau, who worked well to develop the squad. "They complement each other so well."
She encouraged anyone considering artistic swimming to join the club.
"I look forward to having more girls and a bigger team and more success."

‘Their story is part of my story'
Ajax Banstola, 11, shows a photo taken soon after Tenzing Norgay and Sir Edmund Hillary achieved their stunning summit. PHOTO: SAM HENDERSON The extraordinary achievement of two pioneering mountaineers highlights the value of friendship and connection. Sherpa Tenzing Norgay, of Nepal, and Sir Edmund Hillary, of New Zealand, scaled Sagarmatha (Mt Everest) on this day 72 years ago, becoming the first to stand on its 8848m summit. Ajax Banstola, 11, said the story was ''one of the coolest adventures in history''. Hillary and Norgay began their final push for the summit at 6.30am on May 29, 1953. Backed by an expedition of more than 400 people led by Colonel John Hunt, they set off from base camp on the long journey to the top. ''Their resilience, teamwork, the effort is honestly legendary, but a thing we should all remember is they did it together, not alone. It would be really hard alone,'' Ajax said. ''They did it together as friends.'' Ajax has a personal connection to both Nepal and New Zealand. ''I was born in Pokhara, a lovely city [in Nepal] and I came here when I was 3 years old, really small. ''But my dad and my mum, they always share stories about how or what I did when I was small.'' The city sits near the Annapurna mountain range, which contains some of the world's highest peaks. The tale of Norgay and Hillary resonates with Ajax because of his connection to both countries. ''To me, Sagarmatha Everest Day is more than just remembering a climb. ''It is about two amazing people, one from Nepal, where I was born, and one from New Zealand, where I now live. ''It is like their story is part of my story too.'' Ajax said Norgay was a true mountain expert. Hillary, a beekeeper from Auckland, also showed guts and skill, he said. For Ajax the best part was they respected each other. ''They came from totally different worlds, but they worked together like champions. ''That is what makes this story so special.''

Doing laps for Coastguard
Joining Coastguard fundraising efforts is local ice swimmer Francois Lambrechts. PHOTO: SUPPLIED Local ice swimmer Francois Lambrechts is taking the plunge for a worthy cause. He is participating in the Coastguard Tautiaki Moana Big Swim to raise funds for the organisation. The challenge urges participants to set a swimming goal and invite friends, whānau and colleagues to sponsor them. At its inaugural event last year, more than 1260 swimmers raised $350,000 for the marine search and rescue organisation. Lambrechts was among them, setting a target of 50km which he beat by swimming 59km. This year he is raising the bar with an initial goal of 60km. If he raises $1000 before June starts he will lift his June goal to 80km, increasing to 100km if donations reach $2000 before June. "So people are welcome to 'punish' me by supporting the cause," he said. Not only is Lambrechts an ambassador whose profile promotes the fundraiser, he is also a Coastguard volunteer. "I grew up in Cape Town, South Africa. "We spent a bit of time on the water, but I did not really know much." When he joined Coastguard, he was impressed by the comprehensive training the organisation offered from basic recruit to skipper. There is also a range of courses, such as Boatmaster, GPS operator and radar operator. Lambrechts serves on the operational crew and instructs less experienced members. Almost everyone in the organisation is a volunteer. "It is a really great organisation that will look after you." Alongside callouts, regular exercises give volunteers physical activity and social interaction. Lambrechts encouraged others to join the event and set realistic swimming goals. Coastguard acting chief executive Philip Harkness said this year's event aimed to build on last year's success — inspiring more people to join, raising awareness and funding support for more than 2000 volunteers who respond when people need help on the water. This past summer, volunteers responded to 1232 incidents, bringing 3210 people home to safety. • Go to to donate or head to to sign up.
