
FutureHouse previews an AI tool for 'data-driven' biology discovery
FutureHouse, an Eric Schmidt-backed nonprofit that aims to build an "AI scientist" within the next decade, has released a new tool that it claims can help support "data-driven discovery" in biology. The new tool comes just a week after FutureHouse launched its API and platform.
The tool, called Finch, takes in biology data (primarily in the form of research papers) and a prompt (e.g. "What can you tell me about molecular drivers of cancer mataseses?") and runs code before generating figures and inspecting the results. In a series of posts on X, FutureHouse co-founder and CEO Sam Rodriques compared it to a "first-year grad student."
"[B]eing able to [do all] this in minutes is a superpower," Rodriques wrote. "[Finch] actually ends up finding some really cool stuff [...] For our own projects internally, we have found it to be pretty awesome."
FutureHouse's proposition, like that of many, many startups and tech giants, is that Finch and other AI tools will someday automate steps in the scientific process.
In an essay earlier this year, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said "superintelligent" AI tools could "massively accelerate scientific discovery and innovation." Similarly, the CEO of Anthropic, which just this week launched an "AI for science" program, has boldly predicted that AI could help formulate cures for most cancers.
Yet evidence is lacking. Many researchers don't consider AI today to be especially useful in guiding the scientific process. Tellingly, FutureHouse has yet to achieve a scientific breakthrough or make a novel discovery with its AI tools.
Biology, particularly on the drug discovery side, is an attractive target for AI companies. Precedence Research estimates the market was worth $65.88 billion in 2024 and could reach $160.31 billion by 2034.
While there have been some successes, AI hasn't provided an immediate magical solution in the lab. Several firms employing AI for drug discovery, including Exscientia and BenevolentAI, have suffered high-profile clinical trial failures in recent years. Meanwhile, the accuracy of leading AI systems for drug discovery, like Google DeepMind's AlphaFold 3, tends to vary widely.

Tesla (TSLA) stock slumped Wednesday in the immediate fallout of the very public policy blowout between President Trump and Tesla CEO Elon Musk, which Musk himself amped up on Wednesday. "Call your Senator, Call your Congressman, Bankrupting America is NOT ok! KILL the BILL," Musk posted on X. Musk added early Wednesday morning, "If the massive deficit spending continues, there will only be money for interest payments and nothing else!" The comments come after the one-time leader of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) angrily posted on Tuesday, "I'm sorry, but I just can't stand it anymore. This massive, outrageous, pork-filled Congressional spending bill is a disgusting abomination." "Shame on those" who voted for it in the House, he said. Musk's rhetoric on Trump and the Republican-backed "big, beautiful bill" ramped up recently with Musk's comments to "CBS News Sunday Morning" and hit detonation levels with the now two-day barrage. It comes as the bill faces an uncertain future in the Senate, with a Congressional Budget Office estimation of its impact on the deficit adding fuel to Musk's line of argument. The nonpartisan office projected the House-passed version of the bill would add $2.4 trillion to deficits over the next 10 years. The formerly Musk-led DOGE itself has come under criticism for not producing the amount of budgetary cuts Musk touted it could find, and the cuts it has produced have been deeply unpopular. Musk's closeness to the Trump administration had been seen as a boon for Tesla, given its range of business with SpaceX and NASA and the regulatory levers NHTSA could pull with getting autonomous driving rules in place for Tesla's robotaxi testing. Read more: How to avoid the sticker shock on Tesla car insurance But demand weakness in the EU and recent protests at US Tesla showrooms have followed Musk's controversial foray into politics, causing some Tesla owners to become alienated by Musk, specifically by his right-leaning tendencies, DOGE, and outward support of President Trump. Tesla's big robotaxi test is slated for June 12 in Austin. Much of the company's value is tied to whether it can fully unlock autonomous driving for robotaxi purposes and individual owners. Meanwhile, Alphabet's (GOOG, GOOGL) Waymo continues to plow ahead and is essentially the leader in the space, accumulating 250,000 robotaxi trips per week. Also driving the news today is Tesla's bread-and-butter automotive business, where new sales reports from international regions have been mostly negative. A longtime bright spot, however, is Australia. Australian publication Drive reported that Tesla had 3,897 vehicle deliveries in May, its highest sales total in nearly a year. The refreshed Model Y powered those sales with 3,580 units sold, up 122.5% from a year ago, and total deliveries up 9.3%. Interestingly, Tesla's year-to-date sales are still down 48.2% in Australia. Model 3 sedan sales were down 83.8% in May. But May's strong sales of the updated Model Y may be an indicator of more positive news to come for the EV maker, which is still the top EV seller in the country. On the flip side, research firm New AutoMotive group reported that Tesla UK registrations in May tumbled 45% to 1,758 units. Meanwhile, overall UK car registrations rose 4.3%, and China rival BYD's sales more than doubled in May to 1,388 units, though both figures include gas-powered and hybrid autos. The UK's results follow the negative trends in Europe, where May sales in major regions like France, Sweden, Germany, Denmark, and Spain slumped lower. Velvet Worm Slime Reveals Its Sticky Secrets
The velvet worm, a squishy little predator that looks like the stretch-limo version of a caterpillar, has a whimsical MO: it administers death by Silly String. In the leaf litter of tropical and temperate forests around the world, velvet worms stalk the night on dozens of stubby legs. The pocket-size predator—whose species range from less than half an inch to eight inches long—can barely see, so it bumbles around, hoping to literally bump into an edible bug such as a cricket or a woodlouse. When it finds one, the velvet worm uses nozzles on either side of its face to shoot jets of sticky slime at its victim. 'It happens so fast it's almost like they're sneezing,' says Matthew Harrington, a biochemist at McGill University who has studied velvet worms for a decade. At first, the goo is a watery liquid, but in midair it transforms into jellylike ropes that ensnare the unlucky creature and stick it to the ground. As the prey struggles, the slime forms fibrous threads, and within seconds the substance hardens into a glasslike solid. Scientists have been intrigued by velvet worm slime's adhesive properties for more than a century. (In the 1870s researchers puzzling over what makes it stick tried tasting it. The verdict: bitter.) Recent findings suggest the phase-shifting goo could inspire a new generation of recyclable bioplastics, according to research published by Harrington and his colleagues in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences USA. Previously, the researchers discovered that soaking the hardened fibers in water returned them to their liquid state—and by rubbing the resultant mess between their fingertips, they could get fibers as strong as nylon to re-form. That means 'everything we need to know about making these fibers is encoded in the proteins themselves,' Harrington says. But isolating those proteins is easier said than done, the scientists found. The slime is so sensitive to touch that even standard laboratory techniques such as pipetting can trigger its phase shift. To avoid that sticky situation altogether, the scientists sequenced the RNA of proteins from the slime of velvet worms collected in Barbados, Singapore and Australia. Then they fed the RNA sequences into AlphaFold3, a program that uses artificial intelligence to predict protein shapes. For all three species, it 'spit out this horseshoe shape' rich in the amino acid leucine, Harrington says. Although this structure is novel to materials scientists, it's old hat to evolution. A similar protein called a toll-like receptor is part of an ancient immune system feature found across plants, invertebrates and vertebrates. These receptors sit on the surface of immune cells, binding tightly to pieces of invading microbes and releasing them later. Harrington and his team suggest the horseshoe-shaped protein may use a similar 'host-guest' dynamic to grab onto other proteins in the slime, binding strongly but reversibly to form the powerful fibers. Those are magic words to materials scientists working on developing replacements for plastic that can be broken down easily and re-formed into new shapes. These horseshoe proteins are a significant find, says Yendry Corrales Ureña, a researcher at Costa Rica's National Laboratory of Nanotechnology who studies velvet worm slime but wasn't involved in the study. She adds, however, that these proteins don't account for important properties of the slime such as its toughness or elasticity. 'They are just one piece of the larger puzzle.' Julian Monge Najera, an ecologist at the University of Costa Rica who researches invertebrate evolution, says the fact that three velvet worm species from different continents have the same protein shape in their slime underscores how incredibly ancient velvet worms are and how long ago their chemical R&D must have occurred. The fossil record shows that velvet worms have existed almost exactly as they do now for at least 300 million years, predating both dinosaurs and today's continents. 'If I could go back in a time machine, the velvet worms I would catch in the post-Cambrian period would be identical to the ones in Costa Rica's cloud forests today,' Monge Najera says—phase-shifting slime and all. Harrington and his team are working to purify the horseshoe protein from the slime and confirm its structure via electron microscopy. 'We won't be milking velvet worms for slime to replace plastics,' Harrington says. 'But we hope to copy their chemical tricks.'

2 Ways I'm Using ChatGPT Advanced Voice to Improve My Life
Last fall, my artist mom and I were invited to give a presentation at the Cambridge Science Festival about the intersection of AI and art. It was an exciting opportunity. But I also hadn't done an in-person hands-on workshop like this before. I needed someone – or something – to help me talk out my ideas. That something turned out to be ChatGPT's advanced voice feature. This feature came out in the summer of 2024, but often isn't the first use case that comes to mind. As a full-time creator of over 10 years, I'm constantly sussing out new tools to see which ones are actually helpful, versus which features are just more hot air. And with how fast ChatGPT has been rolling out new features and upgrades, OpenAI has kept me busy. It's also made me realize a lot of people using ChatGPT aren't aware of all the different things the chatbot can currently do. Meet our contributors The difference between ChatGPT's standard and advanced voice modes The main difference between ChatGPT's standard voice and advanced voice is that standard voice uses text-to-speech engines, whereas advanced voice uses a unified model. In standard mode, the AI creates its response in text first and then a separate voice tool reads the text aloud. While the voice may sound decent, it can feel unnatural and often delayed. A unified model like advanced voice doesn't separate writing and speaking. According to OpenAI's website, advanced voice mode's multimodal model (GPT-4o) works more like a human and adjusts its tone in a smooth flow. In the ChatGPT mobile app's voice interface, standard mode is represented by a black circle in the center of the conversation screen; for advanced mode, it's a blue orb. Advanced mode is a paid feature, but users on ChatGPT's free plan can get limited usage of it each day. The blue orb is listening. Let AI act as a sounding board I'm excited about using advanced voice as a strategic thinking partner to help me work through important and challenging problems. One limitation of ChatGPT is that its base training data only goes up to a certain month and year. While it draws from a wide range of books, articles and web content, it may lack up-to-date knowledge or insight on niche, highly specialized topics. This changes when certain features are enabled, and you can enable these features while also using advanced voice. My favorite ChatGPT prompt features are: Search. Xiang Li is my mom and the artist behind a massive collection of Chinese empresses painted on silk using gemstone watercolors. When I used ChatGPT's advanced voice and asked what it knew about Xiang Li Art, it quickly referenced information we had only updated recently. From interactive AI-powered art exploration to live AI demos, panel discussion and youth engagement activities, we were able to implement several practical ideas during our live event in Cambridge, and they were very well-received. You can be very specific with your questions, and can ask follow-ups to go even deeper. I often like to treat advanced voice like a friend or listening partner rather than a search engine as I work through ideas. More nuanced translation Thanks to advanced voice, when my partner (who primarily speaks English) communicates with my mom (who only speaks Mandarin Chinese), the translations feel more natural. ChatGPT's advanced voice can speak over 50 languages. This model feels much more natural, as it can think, talk, pause and react. This can be a slightly tricky experiment if you're using advanced voice for this purpose for the first time. My prompt usually goes something like this: "Hey ChatGPT, I have two speakers in the room: Adam and my mom Xiang. Adam speaks English, and Xiang speaks Mandarin Chinese. I want you to act as a translator between them. After Adam's done talking, please translate it into Mandarin Chinese for Mom, and vice versa." The only trouble we experience sometimes is timing. ChatGPT may jump in a bit early while someone's still talking. To improve this, we told ChatGPT to listen for the word "Go" before providing translation. I find this type of fine-tuning can be helpful because our speech patterns and intonation differ from person to person, making it challenging for ChatGPT to decipher how to react. After using the feature regularly, I notice it's picking up context in more complex situations. It can recall information in longer conversations, understand subtle nuances and respond to my emotions more accurately. I'm expecting advanced voice to become more intelligent and intuitive over time.
