Pondok schools to be upgraded with new technology
KUALA LUMPUR : The government will restore and elevate the status of 'pondok' schools (community religious schools) to ensure they remain a bulwark for the faith, morals, and character of the Muslim community, in line with modern demands, said Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.
The initiative involves cooperation between the finance ministry and Jakim (the Islamic development department) to ensure that religious schools and pondok institutions that are in poor condition can be developed with new facilities and technology.
'We want to add new technology, including information technology, digitalisation, and artificial intelligence, so that this bulwark remains the strongest one to defend the faith, morals, and character of the Ummah,' he said at the opening of the international Quran recital and memorisation competition.
Anwar also announced that on Aug 8, he would launch a programme to expand the dissemination of the Quran through official translations into 30 languages.
'In all my travels around the world – to Peru, Brazil, France, Cambodia, and dozens of other countries in recent years – every time I visit, I bring the Quran along with a translation in that country's language, and we distribute it officially. This, I believe, is a good approach,' he said.

In a video posted on Facebook, Muhyiddin said Anwar's claim that he had made such a remark was slanderous. 'I have never said such a thing. From the beginning, our fundamental policy on subsidies has been that they are meant for Malaysians, not foreigners. 'I want to ask where Anwar read or heard that (purported statement), because there's definitely none. 'What was the source, and was it genuine or fake?' asked the Bersatu president. Earlier today, Sinar Harian quoted Anwar as saying that Muhyiddin had questioned the government for burdening foreigners when they had also made significant contributions to the country. The prime minister said the government had decided on targeted subsidies for electricity and RON95 petrol so that they could continue helping Malaysians while reducing the nation's fiscal deficit.

Sri Lankan parliament sacks disgraced police chief

(EPA Images pic) COLOMBO : Sri Lanka's parliament voted overwhelmingly today to dismiss police chief Deshabandu Tennakoon for misconduct and criminal behaviour, making him the island's first inspector-general to be impeached. Tennakoon, 54, was removed less than two years after his controversial appointment, with a disciplinary committee finding him unfit to lead its 85,000-strong law enforcement body. Tennakoon was appointed in November 2023 by then-president Ranil Wickremesinghe, despite the Supreme Court having previously ruled that he had tortured a suspect in custody by rubbing menthol balm on his genitals. Public security minister Ananda Wijepala told parliament today that Tennakoon should never have been put in the top job, given that he faced 40 court cases for abuse of power. 'He is the most disgraced police chief in the history of our country,' Wijepala said. Parliament backed a resolution by speaker Jagath Wickramaratne to impeach Tennakoon, following a disciplinary hearing led by a Supreme Court judge and two others. 'I am pleased to inform that the motion to impeach Deshabandu Tennakoon has been approved with 177 votes in favour, and none against,' Wickramaratne said. Members of the main opposition SJB party also voted to remove the police chief. Shortly after his appointment to head the force, Tennakoon was accused of authorising a botched raid in December 2023 that led to a gun battle between rival police units in the coastal resort town of Weligama, resulting in the death of an officer. A disciplinary inquiry found that Tennakoon had 'spearheaded the questionable, illegal act of shooting'. The Supreme Court suspended him in July 2024 pending the outcome of a separate case. In March, the state prosecutor told a court that Tennakoon was operating a paramilitary hit squad to carry out illegal activities and was unfit to serve, even at the lowest rank in the police force. Opposition leader Sajith Premadasa said his party had objected to Tennakoon's appointment from the outset, and today's vote vindicated their position. There has been no response from Tennakoon since the impeachment process was initiated last month.

Anwar: Malaysia, Philippines to strengthen strategic cooperation for Asean's future
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia and the Philippines are committed to strengthening strategic cooperation to ensure a more peaceful and united future for Asean, says Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. In a Facebook post tonight, Anwar said the commitment was among the matters discussed during a phone conversation with Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr today. "The discussion also touched on peace and harmony in international waters and border areas, which are our shared priorities for regional stability," said the prime minister. Anwar said he also shared positive developments regarding the border negotiations between Thailand and Cambodia, which are expected to be finalised this Thursday through the consensus of the two countries' defence ministers during the Extraordinary General Border Committee (GBC) meeting here. He said the development marked another step forward in realising Asean's aspirations of becoming a peaceful, stable and prosperous region. Cambodian Defence Minister General Tea Seiha and acting Thai Defence Minister General Natthaphon Narkphanit, along with armed forces chiefs and government representatives of both countries, are expected to attend the GBC meeting. Thailand and Cambodia had agreed to implement a ceasefire effective midnight on July 28 following a special meeting chaired by Anwar at the Seri Perdana Complex in Putrajaya.
