Thug Life plea: SC asks petitioners to go to HC

Time of India2 days ago

The Supreme Court declined an urgent hearing regarding a petition from the Karnataka Theatres Association requesting protection against threats from fringe groups opposing the Tamil film Thug Life, featuring Kamal Haasan. The petitioners, filing under Article 32 of the Constitution, stated that certain organisations had issued explicit threats to incinerate Karnataka theatres planning to screen the film. The production house was compelled to seek legal protection due to escalating threats, as presented before a Vacation Bench led by Justice PK Mishra.Justice Mishra rejected the petition's urgency, stating, 'If you are afraid the theatres might be set on fire, keep fire extinguishers ready.' He suggested the petitioners seek redress from the High Court, noting the case did not require Supreme Court intervention. 'Why file an Article 32 petition here? Go to the High Court,' he stated.

40 homes in DLF-2 under govt lens for illegal construction in Gurgaon

Gurgaon: The district town planner (enforcement) has initiated an investigation into illegal modifications in 40 houses in DLF 2. However, sources in the enforcement wing said the department suspects the number of violators may exceed the current list of 40 homes. "What has come to light is just the tip of the iceberg. More properties may be surveyed as the probe expands," an official requesting anonymity said. The list of irregularities includes additional floors constructed without approval, encroachments in front and rear setbacks, misuse of stilt parking and unauthorised alterations in balconies — all of which violate approved building plans and occupancy norms. The crackdown on rampant unauthorised construction in one of Gurgaon's most posh colonies follows a formal complaint by the maintenance agency of DLF Estate Developers Limited, which submitted photographic evidence and a detailed list of violations to the town planning department. The violations span across multiple blocks — K, J, L, M, N, Q, Gulmohar, Kesia and Madhya Marg — where homeowners are allegedly flouting building norms with impunity. Acting on the complaint, the town planner's office directed a junior engineer to survey the listed properties and submit a report within a week. "Once the report is submitted, show-cause notices will be issued, followed by restoration orders. If violations are not addressed, sealing of premises and cancellation of occupation certificates will be initiated," town planner Amit Madholia said. This action comes in the backdrop of a wider crackdown ordered by the Punjab and Haryana high court against illegal construction in DLF 1 to 5. So far, over 5,000 houses were served notices in that case. However, Supreme Court has currently stayed coercive action, with the next hearing scheduled for July. In the meantime, the town planner is continuing its departmental proceedings based on fresh complaints. Urban planning experts say the situation in DLF reflects a larger trend across upscale colonies in Gurgaon, where lack of monitoring and weak enforcement have led to systematic violations of the Gurgaon Master Plan. "The system of self-regulation by residents has completely failed. It's time the authorities made examples out of serial violators," said an architect familiar with DLF developments. West Bengal School Service Commission holds talks with ‘sacked' teachers

The chairperson of the West Bengal School Service Commission (WBSSC) on Thursday (June 12, 2025) met a delegation of 12 representatives of the 'untainted and sacked' teachers over their demands for job reinstatement. The delegation belonged to the Jogyo Shikkhok Shikkhika Adhikar Mancha (JSSAM). No conclusion was reached at the meeting by the time of this report being published. Hundreds of 'untainted' teachers, who lost their jobs after an April 3 Supreme Court order invalidating nearly 26,000 teaching and non-teaching jobs, gathered at Karunamoyee in Bidhannagar on Thursday and marched to the WBSSC office. They raised slogans demanding their jobs be reinstated, as about hundred-odd police personnel stood guard around and inside the office premises. The 'untainted' teachers underlined four crucial demands. These include publishing their original OMR sheets and a list of 'untainted' candidates from the cancelled 2016 recruitment panel certified by the WBSSC. Additionally, they have demanded that the new recruitment process be kept on hold till the review petition is heard by the apex court, and for their jobs to be kept intact through a 'repanelling' process where the original OMR sheets from 2016 are re-evaluated for a new merit list without tainted candidates. The situation arose after the Supreme Court cancelled the entirety of the recruitment panel of 2016, citing a 'vitiated and tainted' hiring by the WBSSC. The apex court consequently directed the West Bengal government to complete a fresh recruitment process for assistant teachers' positions by December 31, till when the 'sacked' teachers have been allowed to work with full salaries. 'While it is true that the State and the WBSSC filed review petitions at the Supreme Court, the deadline for the online application for fresh recruitments is before the apex court reopens after summer recess. This has been done by design to put pressure on us. We will not appear for a reselection, and especially not before the review petition yields a result,' a protesting 'untainted and sacked' teacher, Suvojit Das, told The Hindu.

HC orders action against 2 judges for letting accused go undefended in court

1 2 Kolkata: Calcutta High Court's Jalpaiguri circuit bench on Wednesday directed action against two judges — the chief judicial magistrate and the district and sessions judge (NDPS), Alipurduar — for not providing an advocate from legal aid to an accused in a drug case at the time of court production. Granting bail, Justice Krishna Rao held that the arresting officer violated Article 22 (1) of the Constitution by not informing the accused of the grounds for arrest. It is a fundamental right that an accused cannot be detained in custody without being informed of this. In ordering action against the two judicial officers, the court noted that a written complaint was made after the arrest on March 28, 2024, and after the initiation of the FIR, a case diary was started. The forwarding report submitted before the NDPS court was not served to the accused. At the time of production before the court on March 29, 2024, no advocate was provided and the court granted three days of police remand. After three days, the accused was produced before the NDPS court judge on April 1, 2024. He was taken into judicial custody, but the judge did not provide any advocate from legal aid to defend him. "This order be forwarded to the registrar general of the high court for information of the hon'ble Chief Justice and necessary action against the chief judicial magistrate and district and sessions judge (NDPS), Alipurduar for not offering an advocate from legal aid to the petitioner as at the time of production, the petitioner was undefended," the judge directed. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 5 Books Warren Buffett Wants You to Read In 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo It was noted that even though it was mentioned in the written complaint, case diary and forwarding report that the grounds for arrest were explained, the state did not disclose any document or evidence proving the same. The accused was arrested on the allegation that the police seized 40 100ml bottles of Rc-Kuff cough syrup from him on March 28, 2024.
