India can no longer empower countries that are inimical to New Delhi's interests: VP Dhankhar

New Delhi, May 17 (UNI) Vice-President Jagdeep Dhankhar today said India can no longer afford, by travel or import, to empower countries that are inimical to India's interests, and positioned against India in times of crisis, with apparent reference to Turkiye and Azerbaijan that have clearly sided with Pakistan against New Delhi.
'Can we afford to empower countries that are inimical to our interests? Time has come when each one of us must deeply think about economic nationalism,' he said.
He emphasised that, 'We no longer can afford, by travel or import, to improve the economies of those countries because of our participation. And those countries, in times of crisis, are positioned against us.'
Addressing the Annual Convocation of Jaipuria Institute of Management at Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi, today, VP Dhankhar said, 'Every individual is empowered to help the nation in security. Trade, business, commerce, and industry in particular can play a pivotal role in security issues. Therefore I firmly believe that we must always keep one thing in mind, and that is: Nation first. Everything has to be reckoned on the fulcrum of deep commitment, unflinching commitment, dedication to nationalism. And that mindset we must teach our toddlers right from day one.'
He also lauded the ongoing Operation Sindoor and paid tribute to India's Armed Forces. 'I must, on this occasion—since I am addressing youth of the country in particular—offer my salutations to all Armed Forces and the visionary leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the remarkable success of the ongoing Operation Sindoor.'
Calling the operation a befitting response to the barbaric attack at Pahalgam, he added, 'It was a remarkable retaliation, befitting our ethos of peace and tranquility to the barbarity that happened at Pahalgam—the deadliest attack on our civilians since the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks.
'The Prime Minister of this country, Shri Narendra Modi, sent a message from India's heartland of Bihar to the entire global fraternity. Those were not empty words. The world now has realised: what is said is reality. 'No one is asking for proof now. The world has seen and acknowledged. We have seen this saga—how that country is deeply engrossed in terrorism.
'When coffins are taken with armed forces and military power and political power accompanying them, justice is done by Bharat to Sindoor in sublimity.'
VP Dhankhar also said that a new standard has been set in India's counterterrorism efforts. 'In the mechanics of war and the fight against terrorism, a new benchmark has been set. Indian Armed
Forces targeted Jaish-e-Mohammed at Bahawalpur, deep inside Pakistan territory. Beyond the international border—headquarters of Jaish-e-Mohammed, also Lashkar-e-Taiba base, Muridke. No one is asking for proof now. No one is asking for it. The world has seen and acknowledged.'
He further added, 'It is India's deepest ever cross-border strike. Strike that was carefully, precisely calibrated to cause no damage except to the terrorist.'
VP Dhankhar recalled the US operation on May 2nd, 2011 --in which the United States conducted Operation Neptune Spear, and shot and killed Al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden at his 'Waziristan Haveli' in Abbottabad, Pakistan. Bin Laden, who founded al-Qaeda, masterminded the September 11 attacks in the US.
'This happened on May 2nd, 2011, when a global terrorist who planned, supervised, executed the September 11 attack inside the US in 2001. He was dealt with by the US similarly. Bharat has done it and done it to the knowledge of the global community,' the VP said.
With apparent reference to collaboration between Turkiye with universities in India, VP Dhankhar said, 'How can we countenance or overlook narratives that are anti-national? Foreign universities coming to this country is something which requires filtration. It requires deep thinking. It is something we have to be extremely careful about.'
On education and research, the Vice-President cautioned against commercialization. 'This country cannot afford commercialisation and commodification of education. It is undeniable, it is present. Education and health as per our civilization ethos are not areas to make money. These are areas to give back to society. We have to discharge our obligation to society.'
Sharad Jaipuria, Chairman, Board of Governors, Jaipuria Institute of Management, Anjali Jaipuria, Spouse of Chairman, Board of Governors, Jaipuria Institute of Management, Shreevats Jaipuria, Vice Chairman, Jaipuria Institute of Management and other dignitaries were also present on the occasion.

Pakistan's UNSC posts present diplomatic challenge for India's fight against terror

Written by Shivam Shekhawat On June 5, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced Pakistan's appointment as chair and vice chair of two important United Nations Security Council (UNSC) committees: The Taliban Sanctions Committee formed through Resolution 1988 and the Counter-Terrorism Committee, which monitors the implementation of Resolution 1373, formed after 9/11. Islamabad is now also a co-chair of two working groups: One on documentation and procedural issues with Denmark and another, newly formed one with Greece tasked with analysing the effectiveness of UN sanctions. Pakistan is also set to preside over the council next month. In the aftermath of Operation Sindoor and India's efforts to engage with the international community to highlight Pakistan's nefarious role in fomenting terrorism, the appointments have raised concerns about their possible implications for New Delhi. After being elected to the UNSC in June last year, Pakistan started its tenure as a non-permanent member on January 1. Its term will end on December 31, 2026. Marking its eighth stint at the UNSC, Pakistan's Permanent Representative to the UN, Asim Iftikar Ahmad, restated the country's commitment to utilise the platform to highlight the Kashmir issue and work towards preventing the adverse impacts of terrorism. There can be no doubt that Islamabad will leverage its membership to further its anti-India agenda. The statement released by the Security Council condemning the Pahalgam terror attack was relatively watered down from previous iterations of support to India. Then, on May 5, the UNSC held a closed-door consultation on the 'India-Pakistan Question', the first time after 2019. Thus, cognisant of the possible role Pakistan can play in the UNSC, India's post-conflict outreach to the world focused on reaching out to permanent and non-permanent members except Pakistan, China and Somalia. Similar to India's outreach, Pakistan also sent its delegation to the UN headquarters in New York, as well as to Washington DC, Moscow, Brussels and London. These delegations, led by senior current and former ministers, are urging for the immediate resumption of the Indus Waters Treaty. While the all-party delegations sent by New Delhi have made a clear case for India's imperative to target terrorist infrastructure in Pakistan and the threat it faces from its western neighbor, the road ahead, to win the narrative war, will not be easy. India has been urging a rethink of the financial support offered to Pakistan by the IMF and the World Bank, and its possible utilisation by Rawalpindi to fund activities against India. India has also decided to revamp its push for Pakistan's re-inclusion in the FATF's grey list after it was removed in 2022. For India, this is important to prevent Pakistan from strengthening its terror-military scaffolding further. While ties between Kabul and Islamabad plummeted in the last few months, they have now decided to elevate their relationship to the ambassadorial level, the agreement for which was reached during the informal meeting between the foreign ministers of Pakistan, Afghanistan and China, further changing the dynamics in the region. Both sides have had continued communications, even when the conflict between India and Pakistan broke out. While the Taliban is trying to play both sides, China's close strategic partnership with Pakistan and its openness to engaging with Kabul makes the situation difficult for India. There has been a close synchronisation between Islamabad and Beijing against India at the UNSC and other international platforms. Pakistan will leverage the platform to propagate false claims of India's support for terrorist attacks in the country, particularly the attacks by Baloch outfits. Islamabad has also tried to pin the blame for the Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan's actions on both Afghanistan and India. While the UNSC posts will not offer Pakistan a lot of leeway directly, it will give it more space to bring up issues that align with its own interests and deflect attention from India's concerns. Pakistan will also vehemently oppose India's permanent membership bid at the UNSC. The writer is a junior fellow with ORF's Strategic Studies Programme

Complainant against influencer Sharmistha Panoli arrested in Kolkata

Wajahat Khan, the man who filed the police complaint that led to the arrest of social media influencer and law student Sharmistha Panoli, was arrested in Kolkata on Monday after allegedly being on the run since 1 June. Panoli was arrested in Gurugram on 30 May in connection with a hate speech case and was granted bail by the Calcutta High Court on 5 June. She was released from Alipore Women's Correctional Home on 6 June. Who is Wajahat Khan? Khan had lodged the initial complaint against Panoli, citing hate speech. Following that, he allegedly went into hiding with his father. On 2 June, a formal complaint was filed against him by the Shree Ram Swabhiman Parishad, accusing him of using derogatory, inflammatory, and sexually explicit language aimed at Hindu deities, religious practices, and the community at large. Who is Sharmistha Panoli? What is the case against Sharmistha Panoli? Panoli had posted a video on social media making communal remarks and referring to Operation Sindoor. The video drew criticism and led to a police complaint on 15 May at the Garden Reach police station in Kolkata. The Kolkata Police classified the content as hate speech and filed a case against her. Later the same day, she deleted the video and issued an unconditional public apology for her remarks. TMC vs BJP in the Panoli case The case has taken on a political dimension in West Bengal. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has accused Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee of appeasement politics, alleging bias in the police action. Leader of the Opposition and BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari posted on X, calling Panoli's arrest a case of 'police atrocities'. He wrote, 'This is a case of police atrocities as an innocent young lady, for using her freedom of speech and expression, has been illegally arrested by the Kolkata Police and was sent to judicial custody. This is yet another example of police overzealousness and eagerness to please their political masters.' BJP MLA Agnimitra Paul echoed these sentiments, claiming that the police were shielding Wajahat Khan due to 'Muslim appeasement'. In response, Trinamool Congress (TMC) spokesperson Riju Datta defended the police action, stating that the Kolkata Police was acting on a court warrant. He also issued a warning to young social media users and their families, saying: 'Do not get influenced by the RW cabal run by BJP IT Cell… they will earn their salary hiding behind a cellphone but your children's lives will be spoiled forever.'

Five Left parties appeal to PM Modi to stop ‘extra-judicial killings' in Chhattisgarh

In a joint appeal to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, five Left parties urged him to put an immediate halt to the 'extra-judicial' killings in the region around Chhattisgarh under Operation Kagar. The General Secretaries of the five Left parties- CPI's D. Raja, CPI(M)'s M.A. Baby, CPI(ML)'s Dipankar Bhattacharya, Revolutionary Socialist Party (RSP) leader Manoj Bhattacharya and All India Forward Bloc (AIFB) leader G. Devarajan, in the letter, said there are reports that several senior Maoist leaders are currently in the custody of the security forces. 'We demand that they should all be produced in court and dealt with as per the rule of law,' they said. Also read: Seeking truth and reconciliation in Chhattisgarh Issue of militarisation The Adivasis in the region have long been complaining about the militarisation of the region. 'The Adivasi rights enshrined in the Fifth Schedule of the Constitution are being systematically violated and the forests and minerals of Chhattisgarh are being subjected to indiscriminate corporate exploitation with disastrous implications for environmental stability and livelihood of the local people. We urge upon you to stop this militaristic approach that treats the Adivasis with unmitigated hostility,' the joint appeal said. The leaders underlined that the government has been refusing to hand over the bodies to the families, denying them their right to give a dignified farewell to their family members. The repeated appeal from the Maoists for dialogue has also been ignored. 'The statements made by the Union Home Minister, reiterating the deadline and the Chhattisgarh Chief Minister's assertion that there is no need for talks, reflect a mindset unwilling to resolve issues through dialogue. The government should not be intransigent and celebrate the taking of human lives against the spirit of the law of the land and principles of democratic governance,' the leaders said. The Left parties urged the government to respond to the Maoist declaration of unilateral ceasefire and initiate a dialogue to resolve all issues. 'We reiterate the appeal and urge upon you to stop the extra-judicial killings and violence with immediate effect and order an impartial judicial enquiry,' they said.
