Skunk Anansie's Skin announced as keynote speaker at The Great Escape 2025
Groundbreaking rock artist Skin will appear as a keynote speaker at this year's The Great Escape festival in Brighton, where her band Skunk Anansie will also headline The Independent's stage in a rare intimate performance.
The iconic frontwoman will sit down with The Independent's Music Editor Roisin O'Connor to discuss her extraordinary career and the many milestones she has achieved over the years, including becoming the first Black British woman to headline Glastonbury Festival in 1999.
In the exclusive keynote conversation, which will be held on Friday 16 May, Skin will offer insights into the tumultuous period that shaped Skunk Anansie's new album, The Painful Truth, which is scheduled for release on 23 May, as well as offering her views on the music industry today.
The news comes as part of an announcement for the conference that a number of other new speakers, including representatives from Warner Music, UK Music and the BBC.
Previously announced are high-profile names including Rizzle Kicks star and author Jordan Stephens, and Simon Raymonde of Cocteau Twins and co-founder of the record label Bella Union.
Skunk Anansie's TGE performance will mark the only chance fans have to see the band in an intimate club setting as part of their sold-out UK tour.
'I don't care that we were big in the Nineties,' Skin said in a statement about their album, The Painful Truth. 'Creatively it's irrelevant because in my rock bible the first commandment states, 'If thy rest on them laurels thy shall wither up and die artistically, musically, mentally. And then financially.''

This year's TGE festival will include an additional day of music on Wednesday 14 May, offering guests a chance to discover a wealth of new bands and artists in some of Brighton's best-loved music venues.

A-ha singer reveals Parkinson's diagnosis as band issues statement
The A-ha singer Morten Harket has shared that he has been diagnosed with Parkinson's. In a statement released today (Wednesday, June 4), the Norwegian band revealed the diagnosis. It read: "This isn't the sort of news anyone wants to deliver to the world, but here it is: Morten has Parkinson's disease.' In his own statement on the band's official website, Harket, 65, said he originally kept the degenerative condition 'strictly private' but has now decided to tell fans. He said: "I've got no problem accepting the diagnosis. With time I've taken to heart my 94-year-old father's attitude to the way the organism gradually surrenders: 'I use whatever works'". Harket shared that he'd been trying his best to prevent his "entire system from going into decline". He added: "It's a difficult balancing act between taking the medication and managing its side effects. "There's so much to weigh up when you're emulating the masterful way the body handles every complex movement, or social matters and invitations, or day-to-day life in general.' His symptoms have been 'softened' thanks to developments in treatment from the Mayo Clinic in the United States. As reported by The Independent, Harket shot to fame in the 1980s with synth pop trio A-ha's international chart-topping song 'Take On Me', which was released in 1985. It became a hit after its third time being released with assistance from an animated video, directed by Steve Barron. Harket has released 11 albums with A-ha, as well as six solo records. According to the NHS website, Parkinson's disease is "a condition in which parts of the brain become progressively damaged over many years". The main symptoms involve involuntary shaking of particular parts of the body, slow movement and stiff muscles. "This leads to a reduction in a chemical called dopamine in the brain. "Dopamine plays a vital role in regulating the movement of the body. A reduction in dopamine is responsible for many of the symptoms of Parkinson's disease."

Netflix is about to remove ‘most underrated film of last five years'
Netflix is removing a large selection of titles in June 2025, including the most underrated film of the last five years. While the streaming service releases a bursting list of titles each month, it also takes many down without warning, meaning things can suddenly vanish from your watchlist. Fortunately, The Independent is on hand with a compilation of every movie and TV series falling victim to the culling, including certain Original titles, which we've listed below. Some acclaimed films are also being struck from the service include The Batman, starring Robert Pattinson, Christopher Nolan's Dark Knight trilogy and 2023 family comedy Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret. The Judy Blume adaptation follows an 11-year-old girl (Abby Ryder Fortson) who is forced to grow up in a new neighbourhood after her parents (Rachel MacAdams and Benny Safdie) relocate them. It became a modest critical hit upon its initial release. The movie, which was directed by Kelly Fremon Craig, was a box office flop, grossing $21.5m. The film's addition to streaming service has since led to a cult fanbase – and has seen it branded a 'devastatingly underrated' film by viewers perplexed it didn't receive enough plaudits.
