Centre plans elaborate security measures for Amarnath Yatra

The central government has decided to put in place several security measures for the annual Amarnath Yatra to ensure safety of the pilgrims, including paramilitary cover for convoys and deployment of additional paramilitary forces along the route, officials said on Saturday. The pilgrimage, scheduled to begin on July 3 and end on August 9, is being held amid a high security alert following Operation Sindoor which was triggered by the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack that claimed the lives of 22 civilians. One of the routes for the trek to the shrine crosses through Pahalgam. Earlier, horizontal access roads to the shrine were blocked for regular traffic by the region's traffic police and local volunteers. 'This time, because of the high alert, there will be teams of paramilitary force personnel, who will also secure entry points to the highway. The number of personnel at each point will depend on the location of the access point, topography and the population of the area,' an officer aware of the details said. The officer said that several security review meetings have been held over the last few weeks to take stock of the preparations for the yatra, the duration of which is 38 days this year compared to 52 last year. Every convoy escorted by paramilitary forces will have a jammer to add an extra layer of security, the officer said. 'Convoys were always bunched up in large numbers and escorted by police teams in the past. This time, while the horizontal access roads are already blocked and secured, the escort vehicles themselves will have cell phone jammers. This is an additional layer of security,' the officer said. Separately, the MHA has sanctioned 581 companies of paramilitary forces, up from last year's 510, the officer said. The 581 companies include all the central armed police forces — CRPF, BSF, CISF, SSB and ITBP. CRPF, however, will have the highest number of personnel deployed for security with 219 companies. The sanctioned strength of one CRPF company is around 120-130 depending on the location. CRPF, which already has a large contingent in J&K as part of the internal security and counter terror roles, is the nodal agency for all agencies during the Yatra. The number does not include those from the J&K police and the Indian Army contingents. 'The additional companies from across the country will start moving towards the valley by the end of this week. At all remote locations, personnel will have access to satellite phones so that communication is not affected under any circumstances. All these measures are in addition to all the usual measures like having road opening parties(ROPs), bomb disposal squad(BDS), K9 teams and drones for surveillance. Police verification of all civilian workers, including Yatra Niwas volunteers, pony riders and shopkeepers will also start soon,' the second official said.

Manipur cuts internet in 5 districts: Mobile services shut; crackdown follows protest flare-up

NEW DELHI: The Manipur government has suspended internet and mobile data services in five key districts for five days, citing a serious law and order situation and the risk of social media being misused to spread inflammatory content. The order, issued late on 7 June by Commissioner-cum-Secretary (Home) N Ashok Kumar, affects Imphal West, Imphal East, Thoubal, Kakching and Bishnupur districts. The official directive stated, 'In view of the prevailing law and order situation in the State of Manipur especially in Imphal West, Imphal East, Thoubal, Kakching & Bishnupur districts… there is apprehension that some anti-social elements might use social media extensively for transmission of images, hate speech and hate video messages inciting the passions of the public which might have serious repercussions for the law and order situation. ' The government cited an 'imminent danger of loss of life and/or damage to public/private property' and the risk of 'wide spread disturbances to public tranquillity and communal harmony' due to the circulation of false rumours and inflammatory material on platforms like WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram and X (formerly Twitter). The suspension, according to the order, covers internet and mobile data services, including VSAT and VPN, and took effect from 11:45 pm on 7 June. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch vàng CFDs với mức chênh lệch giá thấp nhất IC Markets Đăng ký Undo 'The order is being passed ex-parte in view of the emergent situation,' it noted. The action followed protests on Saturday night in Imphal East and Imphal West, where demonstrators took to the streets after the arrest of a leader of the Meitei outfit Arambai Tenggol. Protesters reportedly blocked roads with burning tyres and furniture in areas like Kwakeithel and Uripok, demanding the leader's release. In a video widely circulated online, BJP MP Leishemba Sanajaoba appeared to confront security personnel, urging them to arrest him alongside another MLA if such arrests continued. The unrest coincided with an intensified security crackdown. Police confirmed the arrest of three militants from banned groups including the Kangleipak Communist Party (Peoples' War Group) and the United People's Party of Kangleipak (UPPK). Weapons, IEDs and mortars were also recovered during search operations in multiple districts. The state remains tense amid ongoing ethnic conflict between the Meitei and Kuki-Zo communities, which has claimed over 260 lives since May 2023. President's rule was imposed in February this year after chief minister N Biren Singh resigned.

Mangaluru man loses Rs 24 lakh in online investment scam

Mangaluru: A man allegedly lost Rs 24.2 lakh in an online investment scam. The complainant stated that in March last year, while browsing Instagram, he clicked on an advertisement link related to trading, which redirected him to a group called 'Fyers Market Discussion Group'. A person named Sharon Trivedi then added the complainant to a WhatsApp group and sent an application form encouraging him to invest in trading. After filling out the form and registering, Sharon sent a link for the complainant to download and install an app. Sharon Trivedi remained in constant contact and explained various attractive schemes, particularly about Institutional Stock and IPO Placement, urging the complainant to invest money. The app's customer support also instructed the complainant to deposit money and provided multiple bank account numbers and IFSC codes for the same. Similarly, through another Instagram advertisement, the complainant came across a different trading company. A person named Ishita Paul, using different WhatsApp numbers, provided information about trading and sent the complainant a website link. Following the instructions on the website, the complainant invested money and again received several bank account numbers and IFSC codes from the customer support team. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch CFD với công nghệ và tốc độ tốt hơn IC Markets Đăng ký Undo Between April 21, 2024, and May 31, 2025, the complainant transferred a total of Rs 24.2 lakh in multiple instalments via UPI, RTGS, and IMPS to various bank accounts provided by these unknown individuals. Although the fraudsters returned a small amount initially to gain trust, when the complainant asked for the remaining amount, he was asked to pay tax and commission. Despite paying these additional amounts, he was again asked to pay a 10% security deposit to withdraw the rest of the funds. This raised suspicion, and upon further inquiry, the complainant realised he had been cheated. The complainant waited in the hope of recovering the invested money, but, having received nothing, finally filed a complaint at police station. A case has been registered at CEN Crime police station.
