Ravens' AFC North rivals trade star safety to Dolphins for Jalen Ramsey

Ravens' AFC North rivals trade star safety to Dolphins for Jalen Ramsey

USA Today5 hours ago

Baltimore's AFC North rival added another star cornerback after the Steelers acquired Jalen Ramsey in a trade with the Dolphins for star safety Minkah Fitzpatrick.
In a move that can only be described as a blockbuster star-for-star trade, the Pittsburgh Steelers have acquired Dolphins star cornerback Jalen Ramsey for Minkah Fitzpatrick, who'll head to Miami. As part of the trade, the three-time All-Pro will receive a $1.5 million raise this season, bringing his 2025 compensation to $26.6 million.
The Steelers are also acquiring tight end Jonnu Smith, who'll get a one-year contract extension for $12 million.
Ramsey was due $25.1 million fully guaranteed this season, and the new team was expected to be on the hook for $21 million after the Dolphins paid a $4 million roster bonus.
Ramsey, acquired by the Dolphins after the 2022 season from the Los Angeles Rams for a third-round pick and tight end Hunter Long, is still one of the NFL's top defenders and Swiss army knifes. A knee injury forced Ramsey to sit for the first seven games of his Dolphins tenure, yet he still earned his seventh Pro Bowl honor. Last season, Ramsey appeared in every game but missed out on the Pro Bowl for the first time since 2019. Since then, Ramsey has seen the cornerback market reset, and his contract was surpassed this offseason by the extensions of Derek Stingley Jr. and Jaycee Horn from the Houston Texans and Carolina Panthers, respectively.
Fitzpatrick participated in all 17 regular-season games in 2024, finishing with a total of 96 tackles, including 62 solo tackles, four pass deflections (one of which resulted in an interception), and one forced fumble. Although he missed seven of the last ten games of the 2023 regular season due to knee and hand injuries, the veteran safety managed to stay healthy in 2024, playing every single snap in 14 of those 17 games.
Fitzpatrick has two years left on his four-year, $73.6 million contract that he signed in June of 2022.

Steelers Go All In While Dolphins Retool In A Shocking Three-Player Deal

More a game against the New England Patriots at Hard Rock Stadium on October 29, 2023 in Miami Gardens, Florida. (Photo by) The Pittsburgh Steelers continued its active offseason with yet another move to bolster their roster in pursuit of the franchise's seventh Super Bowl. Pittsburgh traded its starting free safety, Minkah Fitzpatrick, and a 2027 fifth-round selection to the Miami Dolphins for safety Jalen Ramsey, tight end Jonu Smith, and a 2027 seventh-round pick. The deal was confirmed by both teams Monday morning, with Ramsey himself confirming his side of the transaction through his X account. It came as no surprise that Ramsey was dealt following weeks of trade rumors surrounding the 10-year veteran after both sides made it known in April that they would explore trade options. Ramsey played every regular-season game this past season and posted 60 tackles, six tackles for loss, four quarterback hits, 11 passes defended, and two interceptions as a member of the Dolphins. The shock was the additional player Miami attached to the Ramsey deal to secure a starting-caliber safety in return. Tight end Jonnu Smith had career-highs in catches (88), receiving yards (884), and touchdowns (8) in a year where he served as Miami's second reliable pass-catcher behind Tyreek Hill. It's reported that Miami is now shopping around for a starting tight end replacement to fill Smith's shoes following his exodus from town. In the meantime, Miami can reunite with a player that general manager Chris Grier previously drafted in former Miami Dolphins' defender Minkah Fitzpatrick. Fitzpatrick spent his first year and a half with the Dolphins as its 2018 first-round selection before being dealt to the Steelers midseason in 2019. Since then, he's racked up 18 career interceptions, three First-Team All-Pro selections, and Pro Bowl berths. The last two seasons from Minkah haven't been as stellar from a takeaway perspective. He's collected just one interception during that span and surrendered a career-high 540 passing yards on 41 catches last season, including four allowed receiving touchdowns. Minkah will be expected to be the leader of a revised Dolphins' secondary that lost Jevon Holland in free agency and is projected to start Fitzpatrick and longtime Jets backup safety Ashton Davis as its backline defenders. For the Steelers, the move signals an all-in approach to a Super Bowl this upcoming season centered around veterans such as Aaron Rodgers, Jalen Ramsey, D.K. Metcalf, and Jonnu Smith. All four are either in their primes or on the outside looking in, with an expected upcoming season of quality football left in them. Smith and Metcalf are physical pass catchers that can line up in the slot or on the outside to create matchup nightmares against bigger and smaller defenders. Rodgers will also have the likes of 33-year-old wideout Robert Woods at his disposal alongside two more tight end options in Pat Freiermuth and Darnell Washington.

Dolphins deal TE Jonnu Smith to Steelers in blockbuster trade

After an offseason marked by uncertainty, Miami made a blockbuster move on Monday. The Dolphins dealt away star cornerback Jalen Ramsey to the Pittsburgh Steelers. As part of the mega-deal, Miami also traded Pro Bowl tight end Jonnu Smith. Advertisement Smith, 29, registered Dolphins single-season franchise bests by a tight end in receptions (88), receiving yards (884) and in touchdowns (8). The 6-foot-3, 248-pound tight end led all Dolphins players in receptions and also finished behind only Brock Bowers, Trey McBride and George Kittle league wide in receiving yards by a tight end. In his career, Smith has caught 307 passes for 3,307 yards and 28 scores. Steelers offensive coordinator Arthur Smith was the tight ends coach in Tennessee when the Titans drafted Smith. Then, he later reunited with Smith in Atlanta after Jonnu Smith was dealt from New England to Atlanta. Arthur Smith was the Falcons' head coach at the time. Smith inked a two-year, $8.4 million contract with the Dolphins in March of 2024. But, after a record-setting season in Miami, reports this offseason heated up that Smith wanted to be paid more like some of the top tight ends in the league. Advertisement Smith's agent, Drew Rosenhaus, said in early June that the Dolphins were still Smith's No. 1 choice. "Here's what I will say on behalf of my client: Jonnu would definitely like to stay in Miami," Smith's agent Drew Rosenhaus said on WSVN, via Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald. "That's his first choice. This is where he lives in the offseason. He had a record breaking season last year. It was the best season ever for a Miami Dolphin tight end. His dream team is the Dolphins. Hopefully, everything works out where he can stay in Miami." Smith received a one-year, $12 million extension with Pittsburgh after being dealt to the Steelers. Advertisement In all, Miami traded away Ramsey, Smith and a 2027 seventh-round pick for three-time All-Pro safety Minkah Fitzpatrick and a 2027 fifth-round pick. Fitzpatrick began his NFL career in Miami after being selected by the Dolphins with the No. 11 overall pick in the 2018 NFL draft. The five-time Pro Bowler played in 18 games with Miami, tallying 92 tackles, nine passes defensed and a pair of interceptions.
