Free bus service for women may be halted on ghat routes over safety concerns

Time of Indiaa day ago
Visakhapatnam: The extension of free bus services for women in agency areas such as Alluri Sitarama Raju district, Tirupati, and Srisailam may be put on hold due to a shortage of buses and safety concerns on ghat roads.
Sources said RTC officials have submitted reports warning that carrying more than 40 passengers on ghat routes could pose serious risks, and have requested additional buses to safely implement the scheme.
The Paderu depot — the only one in Alluri Sitarama Raju district — operates just 47 buses across 22 routes, covering 15,000 km daily, with nearly 6,000 km on ghat roads. Except for the Paderu–Araku route, most connections to plain areas such as Narsipatnam, S Kota, and Visakhapatnam require travel through steep and winding terrain.
Routes such as Munchangiput–Jolaput, Chintapalli–Seeleru, and Seeleru–Chintoor are particularly challenging. "If free services are implemented, passenger numbers will rise. Crossing 40 passengers on ghat roads becomes dangerous," a senior RTC officer said anonymously.
Currently, around 20,000 passengers use RTC services daily in the district, with women making up 40%. Officials estimate that number could rise to 60% if free travel is introduced.
A final decision is expected Thursday afternoon, as RTC MD holds meetings with officials from ghat road sections. "Even if buses originate from plain areas, free services may not be approved for routes passing through ghat roads," a senior official said.

Rare visitor: Lesser Flamingo sighted in Udupi

Mangaluru: In a rare and exciting development for birdwatchers in coastal Karnataka, a Lesser Flamingo, a species largely restricted to sub-Saharan Africa and western India, was sighted — for the first time — in Udupi on Friday morning. The lone bird was found near the Malpe estuary by birder Bhavani Rammohan, who immediately shared its photograph with Mohith Shenoy K of the Manipal Birders' Club to check whether the species was known to be found in this region. It was sighted again on Saturday morning, prompting several birders to document the unusual visitor, said Shenoy. "What makes the sighting even more remarkable is the habitat, a small pond located close to an ice factory, not a typical spot known for hosting migratory birds. Bhavani was surprised and wanted to know if this species is common here. This is not a place one would expect them," Shenoy added. The Lesser Flamingo is an uncommon visitor to peninsular India's eastern and southern coasts. In India, the bird is primarily found in the western region, with Gujarat serving as its key breeding and wintering ground. They breed mostly in the Little Rann of Kutch and disperse during the non-breeding season to parts of Maharashtra, and occasionally to inland wetlands in northern India, explained Shenoy. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Could This NEW Collagen Blend Finally Reduce Your Cellulite? Meanwhile, birders say the winter birding season has almost begun, with several waders already making their presence felt along the coast. "Last year the season started early, and time too, the early arrivals are promising. The sighting of a Lesser Flamingo in Malpe adds to the excitement," said Shenoy. The birders' community is closely monitoring the estuary in the hope that the flamingo might stay around for a few more days. 8 new bus routes inaugurated in Virajpet

Madikeri: With the increasing population and urbanisation, new bus routes have been created for the convenience of passengers, and bus services are being provided, said MLA AS Ponnanna. After inaugurating 8 new bus services from the Virajpet town KSRTC bus stand, the MLA asked bus drivers and operators to behave courteously with passengers and work hard to bring a good name to the organisation. The Congress govt provided free bus facilities for women, which has benefited them. "To reduce the congestion of passengers travelling to and from the rapidly growing Virajpet municipality and surrounding areas, and to accommodate the increasing number of passengers, new bus routes and eight new buses were provided along these routes. Passengers should take advantage of this. These buses will be operated in the rural areas of Virajpet taluk," he said. On the occasion, District Guarantee Implementation Authority president Dharmaja Uthappa, Taluk Guarantee Implementation chairman Johnson, Virajpet municipality chief officer Nachappa, Virajpet municipality vice-chairman Fasiha Tabsum, and members and tahsildar PS Praveen were present. Pilgrim rush peaks at Tirumala due to long weekend

1 2 Tirupati: Heavy weekend pilgrim rush in Tirumala extended waiting time for darshan at Lord Venkateswara temple to nearly 24 hours on Saturday. Serpentine queue lines became the order of the day with pilgrims forced to stand for hours for darshan, accommodation, tonsure, and even for getting free meals at TTD's Nithya Annaprasadam canteen in the hill town. The long holiday weekend started with Independence Day on Friday and Sri Krishna Janmashtami on Saturday, leading to the compartments at the twin Q complexes packed to the brim. Pilgrims were forced to wait in three to four kilometres long queues that stretched till the Octopus unit building near Gogarbham dam — one of the four dams that supplies water to residents of Tirumala and falls on the way to Akash Ganga. Angry scenes were witnessed outside Srivani current booking counters near Annamayya guest house as scores of devotees entered into heated altercations with TTD vigilance and security wing staff after the most sought-after VIP tickets got exhausted in no time due to the heavy rush as early as 4 am on Saturday. TTD additional EO Ch Venkaiah Chowdary monitored the pilgrim movement throughout the day and directed Annaprasadam staff to ensure continuous supply of free food, drinking water, and other refreshments to devotees waiting in the outside queue lines and inside the Q complexes.
