Trump's Turnberry course is ‘worthy' of hosting the British Open, says DeChambeau

PORTRUSH, Northern Ireland (AP) — American golfer Bryson DeChambeau appears to have a good relationship with President Donald Trump, with the pair once enjoying a round that has been watched more than 15 million times on YouTube.
Now the two-time major champion is doing some British Open campaigning for him.
DeChambeau, one of golf's biggest names
, said on Friday he was all for Trump's Turnberry course in Scotland hosting an Open Championship for the first time since 2009.
'I look at it as a golf course,' DeChambeau said of the stunning links venue along the Ayrshire coast. 'It's one of the best golf courses in the world, and I'd love for it to be a part of the rotation.
'Albeit I haven't played it, I've heard so many great things about it, and anytime you get to play a special historical golf course like that, I think it's worthy of it, for sure.'
Turnberry is still on the R&A's 10-venue British Open rotation but isn't playing an active role. It last hosted the Open 16 years ago — before Trump bought the resort — when a 59-year-old Tom Watson made bogey on the 72nd hole and wound up losing a playoff to Stewart Cink.
Speaking ahead of the Open being played this week at Royal Portrush, R&A chief executive Mark Darbon said transportation and other issues had to be addressed before Turnberry got its hands on the oldest major championship again.
Darbon said
the R&A met with Eric Trump
and other leaders of Trump Golf a few months ago regarding the 'big logistical challenges' facing Turnberry, and that the talks had been constructive.
DeChambeau believes Trump would make Turnberry a special Open venue.
'He'd still probably respect the R&A and what they're trying to accomplish,' DeChambeau said. 'I can't speak on his behalf, but what I can say is knowing him, he'll do his best of a job as he possibly can.'
DeChambeau's relationship with Trump is such that he joined him on stage at an election party in Florida in November before Trump was declared president again.
DeChambeau also had a round of golf with Trump and
some short-game practice
on the South Lawn of the White House
a few months ago
.
So what of his audience with Trump around this time last year, when they attempted to break 50 off the forward tees at the president's Bedminster Golf Club in New Jersey using the scramble format? It went on YouTube and was a huge success.
'Got like 15 million views or something,' DeChambeau said. 'It was fun.'
DeChambeau was speaking after shooting 6-under 65 in the second round of the Open at Royal Portrush in a bid to make the cut, having opened with a 78.

Trump put a tariff on gold — or did he? What you need to know about the bullion confusion

Gold futures soared to an all-time high of US$3,534.10 per ounce on Friday after reports that the Trump administration was moving to impose tariffs on certain gold bars. But the precious metal, which has been on a tear in recent months, came off those highs later in the day, when the White House said a clarification regarding 'misinformation' about a bullion tariff would be forthcoming. Here's how things played out throughout the day and where they stand now. What happened? Gold prices surged on Thursday after a letter from the U.S. Customs Border Protection Agency was published, suggesting that levies would be imposed on one-kilo and 100-ounce gold bars because of the 'reciprocal tariffs' that Trump announced earlier this year. The letter, dated July31, was in response to a request sent by a U.S. firm that wanted clarification on the tariff classification for gold bars from Switzerland. Numerous media organizations picked up the story on Friday after it was first reported Thursday by the Financial Times. The news surprised gold investors, and gold futures rose to an all-time high on Friday morning, before cooling down a bit in the afternoon. Why would Trump place levies on gold bars? Speculation about the reason for the tariff was rife. Some industry insiders said that the latest move reflected the Trump administration's playbook of placing a tariff on anything he wanted to control. Others said that the move could be linked to Trump trying to pressure Switzerland into a deal. Switzerland is the world's largest gold refiner with up to 70 per cent of the world's gold melted and processed there. Trump has imposed a 39 per cent tariff on the European nation, which is the highest he has imposed among developed countries. The country's gold industry has already warned that the tariffs could severely impact the sector. But the speculation appeared to be moot later in the afternoon, when the Trump administration said that it would issue a new policy that would state that the imports of gold bars should not face tariffs. The White House said it intends to post an executive order in the near future to clarify what an official called 'misinformation' about the tariffing of gold and other specialty products, Bloomberg reported. Why have gold prices been rising more generally? Traditionally, gold has been viewed as a store of value or safe investment. It's an asset people generally turn to when the stock market isn't doing well or when they are unsure about the economy because gold manages to maintain its value. The spot price of gold has grown by more than 40 per cent in the last year and about 20 per cent in the last six months. But that doesn't mean gold is immune from market pressures. Like every other metal, it has cycles. For example, gold lost more than a quarter of its value between October 2012 and July 2013. Analysts then attributed the fall to factors such as a positive stock market and a recovering United States economy. Factors such as the general risk sentiment, high interest rates and the price of the U.S. dollar has contributed to the rise. Many analysts say the current rise in gold prices can be attributed to increased purchases by central banks, particularly the People's Bank of China, which is often seen as a preemptive defensive action to preserve economic independence as geopolitical turbulence rises. Bought gold bars from Costco in 2023? Here's how much they're worth now David Rosenberg: How did the Canadian market hit a new record? Gold exposure has helped Tariffs on gold bars would potentially help continue that good run and push gold higher, industry insiders say. What comes next? The United States is the largest owner of physical gold in the world and some analysts have suggested it might want a higher gold price. For instance, if the price of gold were to reach around US$4,000 an ounce, it would provide a gain of more than US$1 trillion in benefit to the U.S. Treasury, industry insiders say. • Email: nkarim@ Error in retrieving data Sign in to access your portfolio Error in retrieving data Error in retrieving data Error in retrieving data Error in retrieving data

Trump administration seeks $1 billion settlement from UCLA, AP reports

The White House official did not detail any additional demands from the administration. The person was not authorized to speak publicly about the request and spoke on condition of anonymity. The Trump administration suspended $584 million in federal grants, the university said this week, after the U.S. Department of Justice's Civil Rights Division announced it had found UCLA violated the Equal Protection Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment and Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 'by acting with deliberate indifference in creating a hostile educational environment for Jewish and Israeli students.' Get Starting Point A guide through the most important stories of the morning, delivered Monday through Friday. 'Earlier this week, we offered to engage in good faith dialogue with the Department to protect the University and its critical research mission,' James B. Milliken, UC president, said in a statement Friday. 'As a public university, we are stewards of taxpayer resources and a payment of this scale would completely devastate our country's greatest public university system as well as inflict great harm on our students and all Californians.' Advertisement As part of the lawsuit settlement, UCLA said it will contribute $2.3 million to eight organizations that combat antisemitism and support the university's Jewish community. It also has created an Office of Campus and Community Safety, instituting new policies to manage protests on campus. And UCLA Chancellor Julio Frenk, whose Jewish father and grandparents fled Nazi Germany to Mexico and whose wife is the daughter of a Holocaust survivor, launched an initiative to combat antisemitism and anti-Israeli bias. Last month Columbia University agreed to pay $200 million as part of a settlement to resolve investigations into the government's allegations that the school violated federal antidiscrimination laws. The agreement also restores more than $400 million in research grants. The Trump administration plans to use its deal with Columbia as a template for other universities, with financial penalties that are now seen as an expectation.

Leagues Cup: Messi, Miami Get Liga MX's Tigres; Will It Be An All-MLS Final?

Leagues Cup Leagues Cup: Messi, Miami Get Liga MX's Tigres; Will It Be An All-MLS Final? Published Aug. 8, 2025 4:58 p.m. ET share facebook x reddit link The 2025 Leagues Cup field has now been whittled down to just eight teams — with four each from MLS and Liga MX left standing. We'll get to those quarterfinal matchups, but let's assess the tournament so far. Liga MX Giants Bow Out; Messi, Miami Remain The revamped format – fewer MLS participants, inter-league-only contests until at least the first knockout round – improved the product on the field. It still wasn't enough to prevent MLS clubs from continuing to get the better of their Mexican counterparts in a competition staged entirely on American and Canadian soil, though. (Liga MX squads have failed to reach the final in each of the last two editions.) Coming on the heels of FIFA's U.S.-hosted, 63-match Club World Cup and played at the same time as the Premier League's stateside "Summer Series" in many of the same cities, fan turnout has reflected this market over-saturation. Phase One of the competition drew just 16,631 fans on average, well below MLS's 2025 regular season average of 21,747. Just 5,709 watched already-eliminated San Diego FC beat Mazatlán — another team with no chance to advance — at SnapDragon Stadium on Tuesday. ADVERTISEMENT With just four of 18 clubs from each league making the quarterfinal cut, the final first-round match was rendered meaningless for too many fan bases. Club América, Chivas, and Monterrey all went three games and out. Same on the MLS side of the ledger, with defending champ Columbus Crew going home early despite amassing seven points from its three first-round games. Last year's runner-up LAFC and Supporters Shield-chasing FC Cincinnati are similarly gone from trophy contention before the business end of the tournament has even begun. Plenty of star power remains, however. Lionel Messi's Inter Miami is there, with the Herons hoping Messi is healthy for his side's meeting with perennial Liga MX powerhouse Tigres in Fort Lauderdale on Aug 19 or 20. The Seattle Sounders, like Inter Miami also a Club World Cup entrant, are there, too. So are last year's MLS Cup champion LA Galaxy, plus Toluca, Pachuca and Puebla from south of the border. The single-elimination quarterfinals are as follows, with exact dates and kickoff times to be announced soon. Quarterfinal Preview Inter Miami vs. Tigres UANL Messi's two assists led the Herons past Atlas in the opener, but the Argentine legend limped out of Miami's second Leagues Cup encounter with a leg injury. Javier Mascherano's team won anyway, despite playing most of the match with 10 men. Miami then came from behind to beat Pumas 3-1, with new signing Rodrigo De Paul running the show in the GOAT's place as Inter clinched a quarterfinal berth. It's the second time this summer that they've advanced to the knockout stage of a major international club tourney, having been eliminated from the Club World Cup by eventual finalists Paris Saint-Germain just five weeks ago. (Miami also reached the semifinals of the Concacaf Champions Cup back in April.) Miami will face a formidable opponent in Tigres, the winners of six Mexican titles since 2011. Los Auriazules are led by longtime Atlético Madrid forward Angel Correa, Messi and De Paul's World Cup-winning teammate in 2022. With four goals in three games so far, Correa leads the Leagues Cup in scoring. Lionel Messi sat out Inter Miami's game on Wednesday due to a minor leg injury, but is expected to be back for the Leagues Cup quarterfinals. (Photo by) Seattle Sounders vs. Puebla The Sounders were the only team in the entire 36-deep field to win all three of its league stage games during regular time, without penalties. Seattle's 7-0 trouncing of reigning Concacaf Champions Cruz Azul was the eye-popper, but the Rave Green also handled Santos Laguna and Tijuana without much trouble. Despite its success in Leagues Cup, Puebla is beatable, too: Los Camoteros finished 17th out of 18 Liga MX teams last season, and they've lost two of three games so far in this one. LA Galaxy vs. Pachuca If you go by their current position in each team's respective domestic circuit, the Galaxy are in big trouble. Pachuca sits atop the Liga MX table three games into the Apertura season, while the MLS Cup holders remain dead last among MLS's 30 franchises, having won just three times in 24 tries in 2025. None of that matters in the Leagues Cup, though. With the playoffs a pipe dream, this is the Galaxy's season now. They've already matched their MLS win total by beating both Tijuana and Santos Laguna by four goals and topping Cruz Azul in a shootout. Now, America's most decorated club is just three more wins away from adding another piece of silverware to its collection. Marco Reus and the LA Galaxy may be dead last in the actual MLS standings, but they're still in the hunt in Leagues Cup play. (Photo by Liza Rosales/ISI Photos/ISI Photos via Getty Images) Orlando City vs. Toluca As impressive as Óscar Pareja's Lions have been so far, they'll surely get their sternest test yet against Toluca. The Red Devils outlasted Club América to claim Liga MX's Clausura title in May, and they've won two of three games to kick off the new Apertura campaign. Toluca beat CF Montreal and NYCFC in regulation and the Crew in a penalty-kick tiebreaker to secure the top seed on Liga MX's side of the bracket.
