'Let's get it on': Opetaia message after brutal defence

A Jai Opetaia right hook likely broke his latest world title challenger's jaw but the Australian saved his best shot for the man he wants next after a brutal title defence.
The IBF and The Ring cruiserweight champion stopped the previously unbeaten Italian Claudio Squeo in the fifth round in Sunday night's Gold Coast duel.
Body shots hurt Squeo in the fourth round before a right hook landed in the fifth and put the challenger on his haunches and feeling for his probable broken jaw.
He moved to 28-0, Opetaia untroubled in what had loomed as a banana-peel clash for the Australian who has been unsuccessfully chasing bigger fights since first winning the belts three years ago.
He and manager Mick Francis will travel to the United States next to sit ringside when WBA and WBO champion Gilberto 'Zurdo' Ramirez defends his belts later this month on the Los Angeles undercard of Jake Paul.
It's a fight Opetaia's been chasing, a fact he made crystal clear post-fight.
"I was just in a rush; I really wanted to get him out of here," he said of the gutsy rival.
"I'm chasing these unification fights and it's frustrating.
"Next fight, Zurdo Ramirez. Let's get it on.
"The fight is easy to be made ... let's do it.
"I believe I'm the best boxer in the cruiserweight division and that's all I want to prove."
Earlier, Brisbane-based Irish favourite Conor Wallace saw off French campaigner Dylan Colin with a gritty, unanimous points victory over eight rounds.
Moving to 16-1, the light heavyweight is ranked No.2 in the IBF standings and eyeing a world title shot later this year in a class headlined by Dmitry Bivol.
Max 'Money' McIntyre, still just 20, set the tone earlier in the night with his sixth consecutive stoppage to move to 8-0.
New Zealand's Ricaia Warren started strongly but the undefeated super middleweight connected with a clean combination to end the fight in the sixth round.
"Welcome to the Money show, ladies and gentleman," McIntyre said.
"I'm here for world titles, here for straps. I want to go down as the greatest of all time."
Bangkok-based Australian featherweight Tyler Blizzard beat Rocky Ogden to win the IBF's Pan Pacific belt while Danny Keating badly split Blake Minto above the left eye and won all 10 rounds in their welterweight battle.

AFL great fumes at ‘inexcusable' failure as image exposes club

Don't miss out on the headlines from AFL. Followed categories will be added to My News. Demons icon Garry Lyon says it's a 'failure of the system' that Adam Cerra wasn't immediately removed from the field for assessment after he received a hit to the head. The Carlton midfielder was collected by Essendon ball-getter Sam Durham in the second quarter at the MCG in what was dubbed 'a dangerous act'. Fourteen minutes elapsed between the initial incident and the Blues medical staff's call to bring him downstairs for a head injury assessment (HIA). FOX FOOTY, available on Kayo Sports, is the only place to watch every match of every round in the 2025 Toyota AFL Premiership Season LIVE in 4K, with no ad-breaks during play. New to Kayo? Get your first month for just $1. Limited-time offer. 'The Cerra thing is ridiculous,' Lyon said on Fox Footy in the second term. 'That is a failure of the system — get that kid off the ground straight away and test him. Whether he says he's right or not, he's the last bloke in this stadium who's placed to say whether he's right or not. You can watch the incident in the video player above. Adam Cerra was grounded by a hit from Sam Durham in the second quarter. 'Take it out of his hands. You've allowed him to run around for 10 minutes with the prospect or spectre of a possible concussion hanging over him.' Dual AFLW All-Australian Ruby Schleicher said: '(It) makes you wonder whether the AFL's overarching doctor has pulled rank and said 'he's coming off'. And if so, why did it take 10 minutes to happen?' At half-time, AFL Tonight reporter David Zita explained the situation in full after consulting with Blues officials. 'The club have said that he was completely cleared of concussion, he was immediately assessed out on the ground and was OK to remain out there in the eyes of the club doctor,' Zita told Fox Footy. 'The vision was reviewed, the club then made the decision to have the HIA completed as an absolute precaution, then came from the ground 14 minutes after the original incident. 'So, the club doctors do have the power to stop play when they need to, if they think there's been a potential concussive incident, so that power was not exorcised in this case. 'But they did say that they assessed him and that they made the decision that he was OK.' In response, Lyon said: 'The question will be why didn't they make it straight away? If they made it anyway, why didn't they make it straight away?' Zita said: 'That's what will be discussed over the next 24-48 hours, I'm sure. They reviewed the vision, then ultimately decided to take him off as a precaution, in their eyes. 'The ARC does have the power to issue a mandatory HIA (if) they think the club should be out there doing it, so that is within the rights of the AFL.' Zita later added via X: 'From Carlton: Cerra completely cleared of concussion. Was immediately assessed out on ground and was okay to remain out there, vision also reviewed on ground, Club made the decision to have HIA completed as an absolute precaution, he passed that also.' With regards to the incident itself, Zita said Durham was 'in strife' regardless of Cerra avoiding a concussion, due to the fact the Bomber 'elected to bump and made contact with the head'. Lyon said on Fox Footy in immediate reaction to the incident: 'If that's collected the head, he's made a decision to bump, Sam Durham. 'When you make that decision (to bump), you are vulnerable. If he's hit him in the head, which it appears he has, I'm not sure you can defend that. '(If) he had his hands down trying to pick the footy up, you try and make a case.' Brisbane legend Jonathan Brown said: 'We know he's a tough, hard player, Sam Durham, but he made the wrong decision there.' Upon further review of the incident, Lyon added: 'You're going to be in trouble. That's a dangerous act from Sam Durham. As much as I love that man ... that's a dangerous act.' ‘Broke his jaw': Jai Opetaia stays undefeated with brutal right hook to register 28th straight win

It was early on in fight week when Jai Opetaia told us how, as a child, he would walk around his gym shouting that famed Achilles line from cult fightin' flick, Troy. 'Is there anyone else?' Opetaia would bellow, grinning as he walked. 'Is there anyone else …' Finally now, he gets to find out. Hitchins vs. Kambosos Jr | SUN 15 JUNE 9AM AEST | IBF super lightweight champ Richardson Hitchins attempts to make a first defence of his crown against Australia's George Kambosos Jr. | Order now with Main Event on Kayo Sports Almost three years after famously winning the IBF cruiserweight title with a jaw busted in two places, Opetaia is ready to completely erase the division after brutally finishing Italy's Claudio Squeo – and, ironically, after almost certainly breaking his jaw. Coming into the bout as an unbackable $1.01 favourite – and with Squeo as wide as $26 in some markets – Opetaia needed just 36 seconds into the fifth to finish the challenger with a brutal right hook. You can watch the massive right hook in the player at the top of the page. As mentioned more than once this week, it was after watching Russell Crowe's performance in Cinderella Man that Squeo took up boxing, so enamoured was he by the underdog yarn of James J. Braddock. Yet there was to be no Hollywood upset on this warm Gold Coast night. Still, you can't say things didn't go to script. After starting the first round cautiously, Opetaia then quickly built into the fight. There was a moment in controversy in the fourth when Opetaia dropped Squeo with a body shot however referee Robert Hoyle ruled it a low blow. The crazy moment – which was loudly booed after replays were shown on the big screen – followed the champ opening with a big overhand right and then, once the Italian was given time to recover from the 'low blow', went on the attack again. Opetaia then finished the round attacking Squeo to the body and head. The challenger, while brave, was quickly running out of answers. And early in the fifth it was all over. Pushing his rival into a corner, the champ landed a thudding right hand that saw Squeo pause momentarily before clutching at what is likely a broken jaw and dropping to the canvas. And it was there he stayed as Hoyle counted him out. Asked about his effort, Opetaia said: 'Man I was just in a rush. 'I really wanted to get him out of there 'I'm chasing unification fights. 'It's frustrating.' The Central Coast product that praised the love from Australia and Samoa before calling out the man he has been chasing for some time, Mexican Gilberto 'Zurdo' Ramirez. While refusing to bad mouth the man holding the division's WBO and WBA straps, Opetaia simply said it was time for the pair to throw down – or at least if the champ wins his own title defence in 20 days. 'Anyone who thinks they're the best they're not the best until they beat me,' he said. 'Anywhere, anytime just pick up the phone.' All of which completed a wild Australian boxing day that saw Justis Huni suffer a controversial 10-count in his world title loss against Fabio Wardley, while Sam Goodman was announced to face WBA featherweight champ Nick Ball in Saudi Arabia this August. And then to top it all off, Opetaia went and chalked up another brutal KO – taking his undefeated tear to 28 straight fights. As revealed by Fox Sports Australia earlier this week, the IBF and Ring champ will now jet to the US in coming day and personally confront Ramirez. In just 20 days time, the popular Mexican star is set to feature as the co-main in Jake Paul's latest outing in Los Angeles. Should Ramirez win, he will be confronted immediately afterwards by Opetaia, with Francis stressing he's already spoken with broadcasters DAZN about putting his client in the $2000 ringside seats. While eventually planning for a hyped move to heavyweight, Opetaia first wins to not simply unify the cruiserweight division, but go undisputed in back-to-back blockbusters. That makes taking on Ramirez and then, in victory, taking the last available strap from WBC champ Badou Jack. Already, there has been talk of Opetaia-Ramirez taking place in Saudi Arabia this October. But the Central Coast product his heard his share of false promises. Which is why he and manager Mick Francis will be jetting to the US to make the fight happen.

‘Do it in a heartbeat': Jai Opetaia's promoter wants seven-figure Suncorp Stadium super-card

Brisbane's Suncorp Stadium could host a seven-figure boxing supercard, with promoter Mick Francis saying he will push the Queensland government for funding to stage a world title unification blockbuster between Jai Opetaia and Gilberto 'Zurdo' Ramirez. Opetaia is Australia's pound-for-pound best boxer and defended his IBF cruiserweight world title in devastating fashion against Italian challenger Claudio Squeo on Sunday night. While Squeo was being stretchered out of the arena, with a broken jaw, Opetaia doubled down on his call for a unification bout with Mexico's Ramirez. Francis says an Opetaia-Ramirez showdown could be held at Suncorp Stadium, but needs the Queensland state government to back it. 'If we had government support, we could make it happen,' Francis told CODE Sports. 'This fight has been building for a while, and it's a stadium fight, but the State government has to get behind it. 'We had some guys here tonight from Experience Gold Coast, and they brought a couple of State dignitaries along. 'If they want to make it happen, they'll make it happen. 'I would suggest to put a major event on at Suncorp, you'd need $9 million or $10 million from the State government. But they'd get it back ten-fold. 'If you put it on at the right time of year, it'll definitely sell out.' Jeff Horn staged two fights at Suncorp Stadium, including his heroic world title win over Manny Pacquiao in 2017. He then fought Anthony Mundine at the venue a year later. Francis said it would take some serious buy-in from the Queensland government and other promoters in Australia, but argued it could be done. 'We've done it before with Manny Pacquiao and Jeff Horn, so I don't see why we couldn't do it again,' he said. 'And boxing's bigger now than it was back then. 'Imagine No Limit, Matchroom Boxing, Spencer Brown, Tasman Fighters, Riyadh Season, Main Event, Foxtel, and DAZN. 'If we all work together, guess what? We can do massive shows, massive events and highlight Australian boxing. 'We just need to get off our asses and make it work. 'We'd love to do that. Jai would love to fight on the same card as Tim Tszyu. 'But we need to work with other promoters and join forces. 'If we went to the State government and said we want to put Jai Opetaia, Tim Tszyu, Justis Huni, Conor Wallace and George Kambosos on, we would get the funding. 'Every one of those fighters has a big name, and they're all good guys. Tim's a great guy, we can put Nikita on too. 'Make it a 10-fight supercard. We'd do that in a heartbeat.' Opetaia lives on the Gold Coast, and has headlined three cards on the Glitter Strip. And while he loves the idea of a stadium fight, he says his preference is still in his hometown. 'Central Coast Stadium – Gosford – that's what I'm chasing, bro,' Opetaia told CODE Sports in the dressing rooms after knocking out Squeo with a brutal right hook. 'I've been chasing Central Coast Stadium since I was a little kid. 'I've always wanted to take a world title back there, it's my home. 'I'm a Central Coast boy. I've got people at home, that's where I come from. 'People from there, they feel like they don't have purpose. They don't have much. We didn't have much. 'To go around the world, and then back home and do it there, that's the ultimate goal.' Opetaia laughed when he's asked if he had scraps in and around Gosford Stadium back in the day. 'I got bashed a couple of times, but that's about it,' he joked. Opetaia was relentless against overmatched Squeo on Sunday, forcing 'Il Toro Rosso' to one knee when he broke the Italian's jaw with a right hook. Opetaia later said he knew instantly that it was broken. 'I felt it, and I heard it click when it landed,' Opetaia said. 'I heard the punch when it hit his jaw and I thought, 'This poor bastard'. 'I've been there before. I saw his jaw, and when I looked at it, it had a little bump.' It was the same venue and the same ring Opetaia's own jaw was shattered when he first won the IBF world title against Mairis Breidis in 2022. 'I didn't go down though,' Opetaia told Code Sports.
