'Much loved' Preston music venue 53 Degrees to reopen after decade
A "much loved" city music venue is set to reopen after being closed for almost a decade.53 Degrees in Preston's University of Central Lancashire (UCLan) campus hosted acts such as Arctic Monkeys, The 1975, Kasabian and Calvin Harris but has been mostly dormant since 2015.It is now preparing to welcome music fans back for a full season of live music events.Live music promoters GS Promotions said it was "delighted" to bring the venue back to life in August in partnership with UCLan Students' Union (SU) and has already lined up acts such as singer songwriter Lucy Spraggan, Peat & Diesel, and the Lancashire Hotpots.
53 Degrees originally opened its doors in 2005 and was run by UCLan SU. It said it closed its doors in 2015 as students' preferences changed and the music industry was evolving making it tough to keep the venue going as a full-time gig space, although it still used it for key student events like Freshers' Week.
'Go-to destination'
Jon Russ, from UCLan SU, said: "We're thrilled to be bringing this iconic venue back to life in partnership with GS Promotions, adding to the vibrant live music scene in the heart of the city. "Our goal is to make 53 Degrees a go-to destination for students, locals and touring acts alike."GS Promotions director Gav Scott said it was "dead exciting" to bring the "much loved" venue back to life.He said it had always held a "special place in the hearts of music lovers in Preston" and it was "working hard to secure an incredible roster of artists and shows for the venue".The relaunch will start with opening the venue's 400-capacity room with hopes to eventually expand into the venue's larger room, which has a capacity for 1,500 people. Sarah Threlfall, deputy chief executive and director of community and wellbeing at Preston City Council, said 53 Degrees was a "landmark venue for many" and its reopening as a hub for live music was "fantastic news" for the city and would further enhance its cultural offer.

The 37-year-old also insisted he had VIP tickets for a meet and greet with former Rangers stars. But his victims called in the police after eventually realising they had been duped by Glen. It lead to him appearing in the dock at Glasgow Sheriff Court last week. He pleaded guilty to defrauding five victims a total of £1,665 in a year-long scam from 2022 to January 2023. Glen, of the city's Townhead, could have faced a jail-term but Sheriff Anna Reid ordered him to carry out 120 hours of unpaid work. Emma McShane was his first victim after getting in touch for tickets for ex-One Direction star Styles. She paid £400 and Glen then said he would post the briefs through her letterbox on the day of the concert. He then claimed there had been an unexpected issue. Fiscal Leo McGinn told the court: 'He said he would provide a refund and in the following days he gave various excuses as to why he did not. 'A partial refund was eventually given to Miss McShane.' Calvin Harris hits back with furious TikTok video after being accused of COPYING new single by 90s popstar Glen was also contacted by Nicola Drummond on Instagram about a Calvin Harris gig. Miss Drummond sent Glen £100 to Glen's bank account but the tickets never appeared. It was only after she alerted police that the scammer refunded the £100. The court heard Glen's school friend Michaela Barr bought four tickets for the TRNSMT music festival in Glasgow. She coughed up £290 only for Glen to claim the briefs were provided on a 'first come, first served basis'. Miss Barr was forced to claim the cash back from her bank. Stephanie Delaney - another ex-schoolmate - sent him £130 for Justin Bieber tickets and after repeat messages about a refund he coughed up just £50. The court heard Nicola Cragg - a friend of seven years - was another he swindled. She had contacted him to buy six tickets costing £745 for a 'VIP football event' at Glasgow's Hilton Hotel featuring ex-Rangers stars. Mr McGinn said: 'Miss Cragg became suspicious in August 2022 and asked Glen to confirm the venue of the event. 'Glen said there had been a mix up with the tickets, that part of the event had been cancelled and £300 was owed to her.' The briefs did show up on Miss Cragg's Ticketmaster account - but she never got the rest of her money. Kevin Corr, defending, told the court Glen claimed to have had contacts in the event industry and had been known to legitimately sell tickets in the past. He added: 'He fell into alcohol and substance misuse which was a factor on his life. 'This led to him burying his head in the sand to the ticket arrangements that went on.' Glen has previously featured on the 'Scotland Scammers' Facebook page outing fraudsters. The message claimed 'a broken hearted little girl' had spent her own money hoping to see US singer Olivia Rodrigo while another user claimed their daughter had been tricked into handing over cash for Taylor Swift.

Calvin Harris has reportedly transformed a sleepy Gloucestershire village into his own multi-million-pound countryside empire snapping up homes left, right and centre. The Scottish hitmaker, 41, worth an eye-watering £250million, is set to move into a stunning new five-bed mansion with his pregnant wife, Countryfile and Radio 1 presenter Vick Hope, later this summer. But he hasn't stopped there, as Calvin has also reportedly bought two neighbouring homes and is eyeing up a third, bringing his total spend in the area to an estimated £15million. One local told The Sun: 'Building work there finally finished, for now, last week and we're expecting Calvin and Vick to move in at the end of the summer after his season playing at clubs in Ibiza has finished. From the road, the house looks amazing. 'No expense seems to have been spared. I am sure they will love living here as a family.' Now the UK's richest DJ has been busily doing something similar, by turning a Cotswolds village into Calvin Country. 11 11 Later this summer Calvin Harris and his pregnant wife, Countryfile and Radio 1 presenter Vick Hope, will move into a stunning five-bedroom mansion in a quiet Gloucester village of just 700 residents. Superstar Calvin, 41, who is worth £250MILLION, bought the pile six years ago for £3.6million — and promptly had it demolished. The home has now been rebuilt to a design by one of the Royal Family's favourite architects. And we can reveal Calvin likes the area so much he has also snapped up TWO neighbouring houses on the same road and has his eye on buying a THIRD. Experts calculate that, including the cost of building work, he will have spent around £15million by the end of the spending spree. Not bad for a lad from Dumfries The star forked out £2.65million for an imposing house opposite his new family home — ready for the baby — and is turning it into a music studio with accommodation for musicians. But after agreeing to sell, the previous owners had to remove more than 1,000 vines which were just three years old, because teetotal Calvin did not want them. Ben's drawings reveal three bedrooms with en-suite bathrooms on the first floor and two more bedrooms on the second storey. Separate staff quarters, a gym, two glass houses and a garage block also feature, and Calvin has planning permission for a pond, timber-clad hideout pod and hot-yoga studio in the garden. One of the contractors working for the star told us: 'Mr Harris is about to move into the perfect house and soon he'll have the perfect 'musical office' to which he can walk to work. 'It's exciting because the idea is he will invite his friends from the music world to use what will be a state-of-the-art recording studio and they will be able to stay on site as well.' A short stroll down the road takes you to the house and vineyard Calvin bought from businessman Steve Mather and his wife Pam. Calvin had sought to keep his identity secret when snapping up the property — but in the parish magazine, the Mathers told how they had to dig up their beloved vines at Calvin's request. Steve added: 'We've already had offers for our vines from safe hands, so whatever happens the vines will live on.' Another resident revealed: 'Steve and Pam were reluctant to sell but Calvin's offers just went up and up until finally they couldn't turn it down. "A lot of people are dismayed the vineyard has gone.' Calvin has also reportedly said that he would like to buy a local six-bedroom home surrounded by high walls and acres of woodland. The property, near the heart of the village, also has an indoor pool. The village it sits in is famous for its annual opera festival, and has a primary school, shops and pub. Locals are wondering if the pub may be the next property on Calvin's wish list — and perhaps he could then spin some dance tunes for the locals. 11 11 11
