WNBA Changes Stance on Caitlin Clark–Marina Mabrey Physical Altercation Amid Backlash originally appeared on Athlon Sports.
The WNBA is changing its tune a bit after Marina Mabrey sent Caitlin Clark to the floor during a heated battle between the Indiana Fever and Connecticut Sun on Tuesday. Yet, the league's change of heart may not be quite what some fans are hoping for amid growing frustration regarding opponent's physicality towards Clark.

Mabrey was given a technical foul but not ejected after sending Clark flying through the air with her shoulder following the star's altercation with Jacy Sheldon in the third quarter.
There is not a suspension coming for Mabrey, Sophie Cunningham or any of the players involved in the altercation on Tuesday. The league did have a change of heart about Mabrey.

The WNBA upgraded Mabrey's technical foul on Clark to a flagrant two which means she will also be fined.
"WNBA confirmed Marina Mabrey's technical has been upgraded to a flagrant 2 which comes with a fine," Front Office Sports' Annie Costabile detailed in a Wednesday message on X.

"Sophie Cunningham, who was assessed a flagrant 2, received an additional fine for her actions in last night's melee with 46 seconds to play. No suspensions."
The news comes as media members along with some fans have been critical of the WNBA officiating for not ejecting Mabrey.
"These officials failed to fully punish - by ejecting - the opponents who are motivated for whatever non-sensical reason to cheap-shot and potentially injure the player whose presence is vitally important to the league," former ESPN analyst Ed Werder noted on X.
Sun head coach Rachid Meziane did not believe Mabrey's push on Clark warranted an ejection.

"From @ConnecticutSun postgame: coach Rachid Meziane thought Indiana's Sophie Cunningham fouling Jacy Sheldon near end of game was 'disrespectful,' but he didn't think Marina Mabrey deserved ejection for pushing Caitlin Clark to the court," ESPN's Michael Voepel said on Tuesday.
"The jealousy these player have for CC is making this league difficult to watch," one fan remarked.
"Made NO SENSE," another said in regards to the flagrant foul upgrade.
"Bizarro world Jordan Rules," one person added referencing the old Detroit Pistons' goal of physicality against Michael Jordan.

WNBA Makes Stephanie White Decision Over Controversial Official Comments

WNBA Makes Stephanie White Decision Over Controversial Official Comments originally appeared on Athlon Sports. With Caitlin Clark back in the lineup, Stephanie White and the Indiana Fever improved to 6-5 on the 2025 WNBA season by defeating the Connecticut Sun, 88-71, on Tuesday night. Advertisement But the game didn't come without a lot of controversy with six technical fouls, two flagrant fouls and three ejections handed out. It started midway through the third quarter when Clark took a shot to the face from Sun guard Jacy Sheldon. The former Iowa Hawkeyes standout retaliated with a slight shove before Marina Mabrey came to Sheldon's defense, knocking Clark to the floor. Both teams started to get involved before they separated. In the final minute of the fourth quarter, Sophie Cunningham committed a hard foul on Sheldon during a fast-break layup attempt, sparking another scuffle that led to three ejections. Advertisement "There wasn't an explanation for the technical [Clark] got," White said. "I think it was pretty obvious that stuff was brewing. When the officials don't get control of the ball game, when they allow that stuff to happen, and it has been happening all season long. All season long. It's not just this game, it has been happening all season long. This is what happens!" White had commented on the WNBA officials previously this season, receiving a hefty fine in return. However, this time around, the WNBA has elected not to fine White for her remarks, per Front Office Sports' Annie Costabile. While White will not receive a second fine, Cunningham was fined for her hard foul in the final minute. Mabrey's shove on Clark was upgraded to a flagrant 2, and every player who received a technical will be fined $200. Advertisement White and the Fever will look to make it three straight wins in their next game on Thursday night, facing Kate Martin and the Golden State Valkyries in San Francisco. The game begins at 10 p.m. ET and will be streamed on Amazon Prime. The WNBA announced penalties for multiple players involved in a rowdy contest between the Indiana Fever and Connecticut Sun during the Commissioner's Cup on Tuesday, June 17. Advertisement The primary skirmish in the contest involved Fever point guard Caitlin Clark getting shoved to the ground by Marina Mabrey after the whistle on a foul call against Connecticut. However, that was far from the only serious incident of the night, which has had fans and analysts criticizing the league and its referees over the past 24 hours for failure to control the game. In response, the WNBA levied several fines against multiple perpetrators on both teams, though decided not to suspend any of the players involved. Connecticut Sun guard Marina Mabrey (3) fouls Indiana Fever guard Caitlin Clark (22) in the second half at Gainbridge Ruszkowski-Imagn Images "The Fever's Caitlin Clark and Sophie Cunningham, as well as the Sun's Marina Mabrey, Jacy Sheldon, Tina Charles and Lindsay Allen all had various roles in several scraps between the two sides on Tuesday night," Camden Markel of the New York Post reported Wednesday. "Cunningham, who was ejected for a hard foul and the ensuing scuffle that arose afterward, received a fine from the WNBA on Wednesday, and Mabrey, who initially only received a technical foul during the game after shoving Clark in the third quarter, got her foul upgraded to a flagrant 2, which comes with a fine." Advertisement The precise fine amounts were not disclosed by the league, Markel added in her report. Indiana won the contest by a score of 88-71, advancing to the finals of the Commissioner's Cup. Clark led the way with 20 points, six assists and two steals. The Fever will next take the court against the Golden State Valkyries on Thursday night, June 19. The game will air on Amazon Prime.
