Man charged with animal cruelty as remains of 37 dogs are found in Essex raid
Police officers, along with staff from the RSPCA and Basildon council, visited a property in the Crays Hill area of Billericay on Tuesday, where the remains were discovered, Essex Police said.
Around 20 live dogs were also found at the property. They are being cared for while attempts are made to locate their last-known owners, the force said.
Two men were arrested on suspicion of fraud relating to transfer of ownership of dogs and animal cruelty offences.
Ovaeed Rahman, of Hope Road in Billericay, has since been charged with causing unnecessary suffering to a protected animal.
He is also charged with three counts of fraud by false representation and an offence contrary to the Animal Welfare Act 2006.
He is due to appear at Southend Magistrates' Court on Thursday.
The second man arrested has been conditionally bailed until July.

Inspector Steve Parry, from the Basildon neighbourhood policing team, said: "This has been an extremely intensive investigation - to have secured such significant charges within 36 hours of making an arrest is a real testament to the unwavering commitment of the officers."
"We are also acutely aware there will be a number of people, potentially across the UK, who may have questions on the current situation or information which they want us to know about.
"We have now set up a dedicated public portal through which we would ask for people to make contact."
Essex Police will keep the public informed "when it is appropriate to do so," he added.

Investigation launched after three dogs found dead in Greater Manchester house
An investigation has been launched after three dogs were found dead in a Greater Manchester home. Greater Manchester Police and the RSPCA were called to a home on Cross Street, Atherton, where the discovery was made on Friday evening (August 15).A number of other dogs were also seized from the property and have now been placed in the care of the RSPCA. Gull dies after being kicked outside fish and chip shop
A gull has died after being kicked in a coastal town. The incident happened on Marine Parade in Barmouth on Monday, August 4, outside a fish and chip shop around 1pm. The gull had reportedly taken fish from a plate before being kicked. It then collided with a parked car and died shortly after landing behind it. Julia Dalgleish, RSPCA animal rescue officer, said: "This upsetting incident took place in a public place and would have been a very distressing incident to witness. "We are looking for anyone with first-hand information, which could help our enquiries." She also thanked those who tried to show compassion for the bird. Ms Dalgleish said: "We'd also like to thank those who showed kindness towards this gull as we understand the bird's body was removed away from onlookers." She stressed that gulls are often misunderstood and deserve better treatment. Ms Dalgleish said: "Sadly, many people have an unfavourable opinion of gulls – but these are intelligent animals who form strong social bonds with each other, and deserve to be treated with respect." The RSPCA is seeking to identify a man who may have information about the incident. He is described as around 5ft 10in tall, of medium build, with curly hair and was wearing a black jacket. Anyone with information is asked to contact the RSPCA appeals line on 0300 123 8018 and quote reference 01596699. The charity also reminded the public that gulls and their nests are protected under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981.

Staff 'attacked' and cigarettes 'stolen' during south Essex shop burglary
ESSEX Police have confirmed a man has been charged after a burglary in Benfleet which allegedly saw a member of staff at the business assaulted. A 52-year-old man from London has been charged with seven counts of burglary and one count of assault. He was arrested in Benfleet on Monday, with the same man believed to be connected with a string of similar crimes across Castle Point. He was remanded in custody and appeared in court today, with the arrest forming a component of a larger crackdown by police to tackle thefts and burglaries in the area.
