Mangaluru: Amid simmering communal tensions in coastal Karnataka, the state government has launched a dedicated Special Action Force (SAF) in Mangaluru — a first-of-its-kind initiative in the country designed specifically to combat hate speech and targeted violence. Home Minister Dr. G Parameshwara, who inaugurated the SAF office on Thursday, described the move as a "bold and necessary step" to protect the peace in Dakshina Kannada, a district historically known as much for its cultural legacy as for its flashpoints of communal strife. Recounting a visit made six months ago after a high-profile killing in the district, Dr. Parameshwara said, 'There was fear and uncertainty. Dialogue was impossible then. But the people of this district are educated, cultured and peace-loving — it's unfortunate that hate has been allowed to grow.' The SAF was formed within a week of the decision, by reassigning personnel from anti-Naxal operations. Its mandate: respond swiftly to communal flare-ups, prevent violence, and dismantle ecosystems that promote religious hatred. 'This is not a force meant to intimidate,' the Minister insisted, 'but if provoked, it will act.' District in-charge Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao echoed the urgency, noting that 'communal polarisation has been eating away at the social fabric of this region. People misuse religious identity to justify illegal actions. This force is a response to that threat.' He added that the SAF already has widespread support from the public and that a state-wide rollout could follow, particularly in other sensitive districts. 'No one chooses which religion they are born into,' he remarked. 'Making it a point of division is a failure of society.' Plans are underway to organise a multi-faith peace meeting soon, to reaffirm the state's commitment to communal harmony. Meanwhile, officials urged residents not to test the SAF. 'The less it has to do, the better for all,' said Dr. Parameshwara. Director General of Police AM Saleem, ADGP K Murugan, Commissioner of Police Mangaluru city police Sudhir Kumar Reddy, MLCs Manjunath Bhandari and Ivan D'Souza, president of the Karnataka Cashew Development Corporation and others were present.

AAP to protest against bulldozer politics on June 29: Saurabh
Stepping up its attack on the Chief Minister Rekha Gupta-led Delhi Government over what it termed its 'anti-poor policies', the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Thursday announced a mass protest against the demolition of slum clusters in the national Capital. AAP Delhi unit President Saurabh Bharadwaj said that the party will lead a major demonstration at Jantar Mantar on June 29 at 10 AM, demanding justice for lakhs of slum dwellers. Bharadwaj accused the BJP-led Delhi government of betraying the urban poor. 'The BJP promised 'Jaha Jhuggi, Wahan Makaan' but is instead bulldozing people's homes without providing alternative housing', he said. He also cited the tragic incident in Bawana where a fire in a slum killed two children and pointed out that no minister or MLA visited the site. 'Shockingly just two days later, bulldozers were sent to demolish the entire cluster', he alleged, questioning if the fire was part of a larger conspiracy. Bharadwaj also highlighted the demolition of over 800 homes in the historic Madarasi Camp, where generations of Tamil families have lived for decades, despite holding housing guarantee cards. He challenged the ruling BJP to bring a law in Parliament to protect slums. 'The BJP cannot hide behind court rulings. They are not going to the Supreme Court nor making laws to save the poor,' he said. Calling for unity, he appealed to all the slum dwellers to join the June 29 protest and expose the BJP's 'bulldozer politics' before the nation. It is worthy to note here that the issue of slum demolitions has become a problematic one for the BJP as both the AAP and Congress have been criticising the ruling party for failing to protect the slum dwellers in the national Capital. Bharadwaj's attack came as authorities launched a demolition drive in the Bhoomiheen camp in southeast Delhi's Govindpuri area on June 11 morning, amid heavy police deployment. However, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta had said on June 8 that the authorities cannot go against demolition orders issued by the courts and stressed that the displaced residents have been provided accommodation.

Who is accountable for the massive amount already spent on the caste census? The earlier Kantharaju-Jayaprakash Hegde report has now been discarded like chaff. That report cost taxpayers Rs. 167 crore. Who will recover this money? Is this a grand drama to cover up the stampede tragedy ? Above all these developments, there are strong suspicions that the Chief Minister and his High Command are staging a grand drama to divert attention from the recent IPL victory celebration tragedy. Is this truly an attempt to shift public focus elsewhere? Struggle reaches logical conclusion When the BJP protested against the scam in the Valmiki Development Corporation, CM Siddaramaiah had admitted to the mistake. The Enforcement Directorate conducted raids much later. It has been revealed through investigations that the scam money was used for the Lok Sabha elections. The Congress leaders who misappropriated the poor's money must be punished, he said.
