Pierce Brosnan U-turns on a female Bond: ‘It has to be a man'

Telegrapha day ago
Pierce Brosnan has U-turned after previously saying James Bond should be played by a woman.
The 72-year-old Irish actor has now said 007 'has to be a man', going back on comments he made previously.
Brosnan, who played Bond in four movies between 1995 and 2002, wished Amazon well in its takeover of the franchise and said he is 'excited' to see the 'next man' take on the iconic role.
The GoldenEye star discussed the next portrayal of 007 and told Saga magazine: 'Oh, I think it has to be a man.'
This goes against remarks he made in 2019 when he told The Hollywood Reporter that a woman playing the next Bond would be both 'exciting' and 'exhilarating'.
The MobLand star, who was the fifth actor to take on the role of the fictional secret agent, had said that it was time to 'put a woman up there'.
But now, speaking of Amazon's takeover of the franchise, he said: 'I wish them well.
'I'm so excited to see the next man come on the stage and to see a whole new exuberance and life for this character.
'I adore the world of James Bond. It's been very good to me. It's the gift that keeps giving.
'And I'm just a member of the audience now, sitting back, saying: 'Show us what you're going to do'.'
Dame Helen Mirren, 80, who is set to star alongside Brosnan in the new Thursday Murder Club film, also reiterated her previous opinion that the next Bond should be 'a guy'.
The Oscar-winning actress told Saga: ' I'm such a feminist, but James Bond has to be a guy. You can't have a woman. It just doesn't work.
'James Bond has to be James Bond, otherwise it becomes something else.'
Aaron Taylor-Johnson, an English actor known for Kick-Ass, is among the favourites to succeed Daniel Craig and take on the iconic role.
Other British stars like Idris Elba, Theo James and James Norton are also said to be contenders.
Earlier this year, long-serving producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson – the daughter and stepson of original Bond producer Albert 'Cubby' Broccoli – announced they had ceded creative control of the franchise over to Amazon MGM Studios.
The family had controlled the franchise since the first 007 film, Dr No in 1962.
The £770 million deal sparked concern among fans who feared the UK franchise might lose its British identity and would lead to the 'Americanisation' of the films.
There was also online speculation that Jeff Bezos' company would 'dilute' Bond and turn it into a media universe with multiple films and spin-off series like MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe).
In June, it was announced that Oscar-nominated film-maker Denis Villeneuve – known for Dune – will direct the next Bond film, which will be produced by Amy Pascal and David Heyman.
It was also announced earlier this year that Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight will write the script.
Amazon has not given any hints on who will take over the 007 role after Daniel Craig announced he would be stepping down.

Jenna Ortega reveals what 'terrifies' her about being a young woman in Hollywood as she covers Vogue

felt in the past she did not have as much power as she does now. While talking to September issue of Vogue México and Latin America this month, the 22-year-old actress - whose has Mexican and Puerto Rican heritage - said she used to not feel heard. The Hollywood veteran was oppressed early in her career, before her smash hit TV series Wednesday hit screens. For many years the former child star did not have a voice on set, she told the publication, and that 'terrified' her. 'I've always known what it feels like not to have a voice, and that terrifies me. I don't ever want to be in that situation again,' she said after stating: 'Being young and assertive is intense for a lot of people, especially as a woman.' Ortega does not reveal which project made her feel like she did not have voice. Ortega's career began with roles in Jane the Virgin and Disney Channel's Stuck in the Middle, but those may not be the shows she was referring to/ She added, 'Now I just want to make sure I use my voice in the most professional, efficient and kind way possible.' These days she is a mix of 'stubborn' when it comes to her work ethic and 'cautious' when dealing with fame which strikes her as 'very strange.' 'I used to be a very extroverted child, but I've become more reserved. It doesn't mean something negative, It just means I choose my words carefully,' she said. And she feels that the character that made her famous would not enjoy her fame. 'It's funny because Wednesday would hate all this attention and obsession—appearing on cereal boxes and T-shirts is so unusual for her,' Ortega said. 'I also think the world of celebrity is very strange. The glorification of someone you'll never truly know fascinates me, and I'm happy to question it anytime.' Ortega also touched on growing up in a Spanish community in Indio, California. Her father is of Mexican descent, and her mother is of Mexican and Puerto Rican heritage. 'It's a fundamental part of who I am. These things don't disappear or change,' she said about growing up Latina. 'I'm very close to my family and my upbringing. I'm from California, so my community, mostly Latino, was my childhood. It's simply what I know.' Ortega said there is 'a lot of pressure' when it comes to meeting the expectations of Latino audiences. 'Sometimes it feels brutal, but then you go home and remember what it's about. You meet a young Chicana in a grocery store, she hugs you, you talk with her mother, and you see how meaningful it can be for people,' noted the star. And there is a struggle: she does not speak Spanish as fluently as she wishes. 'I'm very insecure when I speak Spanish,' admitted the close pal of Catherine Zeta-Jones. 'Even though I feel proud and I know who I am, my upbringing and my story with my culture, I think I've seen some frustration for not having grown up in a Spanish-speaking country,' she said. 'It's difficult for me not being able to speak Spanish fluently, and I try. I speak with my dad in Spanish, I write, I read, but I'm very insecure when I speak and I don't want to offend anyone. That's been a very delicate point for me.' When promoting her film Beetlejuice Beetlejuice in 2024, a Latina journalist said, 'You are Latina enough.' The moment went viral, because so many Latin woman feel they are not enough. 'I'll always be proud, always curious, and always learning,' she said. 'Even if my experience is not everyone's, I know where I come from.'

Premier League star, 25, breaks silence on awkwardly-sized shorts after suffering repeated wardrobe malfunctions

CALVIN BASSEY has broken his silence after he suffered a bizarre wardrobe malfunction. The Fulham star, 25, saw his shorts repeatedly fall down during their visit to Brighton on Saturday afternoon. 6 6 6 6 6 Fabian Hurzeler 's Seagulls saw their pants pulled down by Marco Silva's Cottagers as they snatched a 1-1 draw thanks to a last-gasp Rodrigo Muniz equaliser. But Bassey had to endure this issue repeatedly at the Amex, with fans joking he may need to invest in a tighter fitting pair. And the former Ajax star broke his silence on social media on Monday with a five-word message. He said: "My shorts are going up," and added a smiley face to his message. In response, one fan said: "It's all a distraction for rivals Calvin." A second said: "Surprised there hasn't been sponsorship offers from boxer companies, or even a belt company." A third added: "They called you out." Many others responded with laughing emojis. However, it is not the first time Bassey has suffered a shorts related malfunction in a Premier League game. In April, during a trip to face Arsenal at the Emirates, Bassey was seen warming up on the sideline. Fulham star Calvin Bassey shows Arsenal fans his bum at worst time possible But as he bent over by the corner flag and engaged in some banter with the Gooners in the crowd - who sang "who are ya?" towards him - by patting his backside, disaster struck. Their attention was quickly drawn from the exchange of jokes, with Gunners star Bukayo Saka scoring in the 73rd minute. That goal ended up being decisive as a 94th minute Rodrigo Muniz strike served to only be a consolation. Fulham face Manchester United at Craven Cottage next Sunday.

Controversial Celebrity SAS star breaks down in tears as they're forced to quit show after nasty injury

CELEBRITY SAS star Connor Benn was left in tears when he was forced to withdraw from the series. The professional boxer suffered a nasty shoulder injury as the gruelling endurance course continued, and on Monday night's episode it proved too much. 3 3 Following a test where he dealt with a drill that recreated the effect of a recovery mission amid hazardous gas, he admitted to fellow recruit Adam Collard that he "would rather f**k up his shoulder than quit the show". However, he also noted that if he was told he was lined-up for a bought within the next three months, it could spell the end of his career. Being brought into the DS's for an interrogation, the team expressed their concern about his injury effecting him long-term, prompting him to admit he has a 'fear in leaving'. Unfortunately, his worst fear came true, and after being checked by the medical team, he was instructed that he would no longer be able to participate as he'd injured his rotator cuff. The DS staff announced he would be medically withdrawn from the course – despite his protests and him wanting to carry on. "It's a medical withdrawal, you have no control over this. You had a great journey," Mark Billingham told the heartbroken recruit. "What if it's fine?" Connor protested. "It aint' fine. It ain't worth the f***ing damage mate," he told him. Defeated, Connor admitted: "I don't want to go, man." DS Jason Fox agreed with Mark, who told him: "Thing is it's getting to the point now where you're still in the middle of your career. You're still destined to pull in the big bucks. Fuming Conor Benn fought to a 'DRAW' by ex-Premier League star in brutal sparring session ahead of Eubank Jr rematch "You're going out with your head held high, you didn't give up." "You've got from this what you need," added Mark. "You don't need anything else. You've ticked all the boxes we wanted you to tick. You've got nothing else to prove to us." Resigned to what happened, Conor was seen crying as he hugged the staff and left the course. Connor's removal from the show came after he opened up about his radically religious upbringing, revealing he grew up believing he would be 'going to hell and there were demons inside him'. "I was a kid, and they made me believe I needed an exorcism," he told the team, breaking down in tears. "It makes me angry, because i look at my son and I just don't understand how anyone can make a kid believe they have demons in them." He was urged by the team to "give himself a break" and "no longer carry that anchor" when he admitted that there's still part of him that questions if they were right. "I've never lost - and I don't plan losing on this course either," he said when he first joined the show. Connor later explained that part of his reason for doing the show was because he was still dealing with the fallout of a two-year ban from boxing after failing a drug test. He has continued to profess his innocence to UK Anti-Doping (Ukad) and the British Boxing Board of Control (BBBofC), and maintained it on the show, saying he was "fighting for his name". At the time of filming, an outcome hadn't been reached, but his provisional suspension was finally lifted in 2024.
