Netflix is saving Hollywood, says CEO Ted Sarandos

Express Tribune24-04-2025

Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos claims streaming is revitalizing Hollywood, not harming it, despite ongoing debate within the film industry. Speaking at the TIME100 Summit, according to Deadline, Sarandos rejected the notion that platforms like Netflix are to blame for the decline of traditional cinema. 'No, we're saving Hollywood,' he said, emphasizing that streaming meets modern consumer expectations.
Sarandos argued that streaming success lies in its adaptability. 'We're a very consumer-focused company. We deliver the program to you in a way you want to watch it,' he explained. While acknowledging that some viewers still enjoy theaters, he described cinemas as 'an outmoded idea—for most people, not for everybody.'
He pointed to steadily declining box office revenues as evidence that audiences increasingly prefer home viewing. 'What is the consumer trying to tell us? That they'd like to watch movies at home,' he said.
Streaming platforms have reshaped the entertainment industry, offering new models for content creation and distribution. As noted by MovieWeb, Netflix and similar services have sparked a revival in serialized television and provided opportunities for lesser-known filmmakers. Streaming has also become a home for director-led passion projects that might struggle in traditional box office environments.
However, the model has not been without criticism. Netflix, in particular, has faced scrutiny over the inconsistent quality of its content. While titles like Adolescence have been well received, others—such as The Electric State, Damsel, and The Witcher—have disappointed some audiences, despite large budgets and high expectations.
As debate continues over the future of Hollywood, Sarandos stands by his view that streaming is the industry's evolution—reflecting a shift toward accessibility, diverse storytelling, and audience-driven viewing habits.

Dolly Parton reportedly snubbed Meghan Markle by declining offer to appear on duchess' Netflix show

Dolly Parton reportedly declined an invitation to appear on Meghan Markle's Netflix series With Love, Meghan, according to commentary shared on a recent episode of The Nerve with Maureen Callahan. Celebrity commentator Kinsey Schofield alleged the decision was made to avoid any potential risk to Parton's brand and public image. 'Her team was livid,' Schofield claimed, stating that they viewed the invite as an attempt by Markle to borrow credibility in the lifestyle space where Parton is already well-established. 'They knew that this ask was just to give Meghan Markle credibility in this lifestyle space, a space that Dolly does have a lot of credibility in,' she added. Parton has built a longstanding reputation not just in country music but in lifestyle branding, with successful ventures in food, beauty, and publishing. Schofield noted that Parton's team viewed the request as strategic positioning, saying they believed 'Meghan was trying to take advantage of her popularity.' The show With Love, Meghan, launched on Netflix in March and features Markle exploring lifestyle topics from wellness to baking, including guest appearances from celebrities like Mindy Kaling and Abigail Spencer. Despite mixed reviews, the series was renewed for a second season.

Netflix announces Nobody Wants This season 2 release date with Kristen Bell and Adam Brody

Netflix has officially announced that Season 2 of its hit romantic comedy series Nobody Wants This will premiere globally on October 23, 2025. The announcement came during an Emmys FYC event celebrating the show's first season. Inspired by the real-life story of creator Erin Foster, Season 1 followed an unlikely romance between Joanne (Kristen Bell), an outspoken agnostic podcaster, and Noah (Adam Brody), an unconventional rabbi. The season concluded with uncertainty as Joanne admitted she wasn't ready to convert to Judaism, leaving their future unresolved. The original cast will return for the second season, joined by new additions including Leighton Meester as Abby, an Instagram mommy influencer and Joanne's childhood rival. Miles Fowler, Alex Karpovsky, and Arian Moayed are also set to appear in new roles. Netflix renewed the show shortly after its September 2024 debut. Foster described the response to the series as a "career highlight" in an interview with Variety, crediting the cast, crew, and producers for helping bring her vision to life. Since its launch, Nobody Wants This has developed a strong fan base, largely due to the chemistry between its lead characters. Erin Foster returns as executive producer alongside her sister Sara Foster. Newcomer Nora Silver joins the team this season, with Jenni Konner and Bruce Eric Kaplan serving as showrunners.

Noah Schnapp gets trolled over ‘Stranger Things' season 5 performance ahead of series finale

As Netflix prepares for the highly anticipated final season of Stranger Things, actor Noah Schnapp has become the centre of a social media storm. The 20-year-old, known for his portrayal of Will Byers since the show's debut in 2016, is being compared to Gal Gadot for what critics call 'flat' and 'emotionless' delivery in recently released performances.
