Jim Magilton left baffled by Irish Cup final penalty shootout decision
The Swifts made history by coming out on top in the shootout against Cliftonville after the two sides had played out an entertaining 1-1 over 120 minutes at Windsor Park.
With the Reds and Dungannon fans at opposite ends of the ground whoever won the traditional toss was set to have an advantage by picking the goal in front of their own support.

But when quizzed if losing the toss had an impact on Cliftonville's defeat captain Rory Hale revealed there was no coin flip and that he was told by referee Ian McNabb the decision had already been made.
"There was no toss (to decide the end) for the penalty shoot-out," said Hale. "It was the IFA's orders to have the shoot-out at the Dungannon end."
The Irish FA confirmed this in a statement after the game saying the decision had been made "in accordance with Law 10.3 of the IFAB Laws of the Game, which states: "Unless there are other considerations (e.g. ground conditions, safety etc.), the referee tosses a coin to decide the goal at which the kicks will be taken, which may only be changed for safety reasons or if the goal or playing surface becomes unusable.'
An Irish FA spokesperson said: 'The decision to hold the penalty shootout at the East Stand end was made with player safety and welfare as the top priority, following concerns over the large number of missiles and projectiles thrown onto the pitch from the West Stand end.'
A bemused Magilton questioned the decision afterwards saying: "I find it startling that a penalty shoot-out can be decided on safety measures, what was the security risk? Our supporters getting exuberant and delighted?
"It's a good job we're here in finals because we do bring the noise...I think it's pretty poor if they thought that because of the numbers we bring.'
The Reds boss was quick to point out that the decision was not the reasons for his side losing the final.
"Did it ultimately cost us the game? No...that would be taking credit away from Dungannon and we don't want to do that,' he said. "Declan Dunne has made a couple of great saves so we can't disagree with that.
"Would we have liked to be shooting into our end? Yeah, but if you take the penalty shoot-out out of it, we had to do more and we didn't.
"I know it's a lottery but they were pretty composed with their penalties and you have to give them credit."

Phillies $100M Slugger Responds on Kyle Schwarber Potentially Joining NL Rival
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The Philadelphia Phillies enjoyed a fourth straight win on Monday and it came with some heroics from their best player this season. Superstar designated hitter Kyle Schwarber logged his 42nd home run of the season in the victory over his hometown Cincinnati Reds, briefly jumping ahead of Los Angeles Dodgers star Shohei Ohtani for the most long balls in the National League. But as Schwarber continues to make a strong case for a Most Valuable Player Award this year, questions are swirling about where he might play next. He has the chance to become a free agent this winter and seems set on testing the market, forcing the Phillies to match the highest offer he can find or risk losing him to a new team. Schwarber's success against the Reds was also a reminder that he grew up rooting for the team and that it could be the destination that most intrigues him next. (Photo by Kevin C. Cox/Getty Images) More Cox/Getty "Schwarber will be a free agent after this season, and it's natural to wonder just how many home runs he could hit at homer-friendly Great American Ball Park if he were to play here 81 times a year," C. Trent Rosecrans wrote for The Athletic. "At last month's All-Star Game he said it'd be 'cool' to play for the Reds, the team that helped him fall in love with baseball." When asked about that possibility after Monday's game, Schwarber reiterated that it would be a thrill to play for the Reds but that he would also love to return to the Phillies, according to Rosecrans. But Schwarber's teammate, Nick Castellanos — who joined the Phillies on a $100 million deal after playing for two seasons with the Reds — was more verbose about Schwarber potentially joining his hometown team. "I think he'd be a really productive baseball player in this ballpark, for sure," Castellanos said, while also noting that adding him would take an "unprecedented commitment" from team ownership, per Rosecrans. As the Phillies continue to enjoy a career-best year from Schwarber, the success will naturally come with some anxiety about losing him. There are definitely some other destinations where he'd be poised for success in the future. More MLB: Yankees Projected to Fire Aaron Boone by End of Month

Kyle Schwarber looked at home at GABP, but could he return home to play for the Reds?
CINCINNATI — The top 10 rows of section 118 at Great American Ball Park were packed with a group of fans in the powder blue of the Philadelphia Phillies to help separate the group from Cincinnati Reds fans at the Reds' home stadium. Many of those blue Phillies shirts had No. 12 on the back for Middletown, Ohio, native Kyle Schwarber. And when Schwarber hit a two-run home run in the eighth that capped the four-run inning and the Phillies' 4-1 victory Monday, the contingent of fans from Middletown were jumping up and down, celebrating their hometown kid. Advertisement 'It's always fun,' Schwarber said of playing in Cincinnati. 'Coming here from early on, in 2015 on, I've had some fun times here, some good games. It's always felt comfortable, right. Growing up, you're watching games (here), and it's always nice when you have family and friends. They came to the game for a good reason, not something bad or doing something stupid.' The home run was Schwarber's 13th here — the most of any park where he has suited up for the home team. Monday's home run off Reds reliever Tony Santillan was the 326th of his career, with 91 at Philadelphia's Citizens Bank Park, 62 at Wrigley Field and 28 at Nationals Park. A HIGH fly ball into the Cincinnati Skyline — Philadelphia Phillies (@Phillies) August 12, 2025 Schwarber will be a free agent after this season, and it's natural to wonder just how many home runs he could hit at homer-friendly Great American Ball Park if he were to play here 81 times a year. At last month's All-Star Game, he said it'd be 'cool' to play for the Reds, the team that helped him fall in love with baseball. Monday, after his National League-leading 42nd home run of the season, Schwarber still said he thought it'd be cool to play for his childhood team, but he'd also like to return to Philadelphia. 'My biggest thing I've always said is that I'm here trying to win and help these guys win,' Schwarber said. 'I have loved my time here, and it's a clubhouse I can see myself staying in for a period of time.' Great American Ball Park has been special to Schwarber, who first made a name for himself at Middletown High, just 37 miles from the Reds' home since 2003. In 2015, Schwarber was the MVP of the Futures Game at Great American Ball Park, tripling and driving in a pair of runs. A week later, he was back at Great American Ball Park as a big leaguer with the Chicago Cubs and, in his second game as a Cub here, hit a tying two-run homer in the ninth inning and a go-ahead homer in the 13th inning of an eventual Cubs win. It was his first multi-homer game and just the second and third homers of his career. Advertisement He had another multi-homer game here in 2020, when he hit a grand slam in the ninth inning of a Cubs win. Schwarber is finishing a four-year deal he signed with the Phillies before the 2022 season, and even entering his age-33 season as a full-time designated hitter, the left-handed hitter should command a contract worth at least $100 million over four years or even a five-year deal. Schwarber hit at least 38 home runs in each of his four years in Philadelphia, including an NL-high 46 in 2022. Though he has twice led the majors in strikeouts in a Phillies uniform, he also led the league in walks last season and is currently hitting .252/.376/.584 with an NL-high 97 RBIs in addition to his home runs. Not only has Schwarber produced on the field, he also has garnered a reputation as a clubhouse leader and a winner, appearing in the playoffs in nine of his 10 seasons in the major leagues. The Phillies are currently leading the National League East by six games. 'He's turned himself into a great hitter,' Phillies manager Rob Thomson said after Monday's game. 'He hits right-handers. He hits left-handers. He hits for power. He gets on base; he eats up pitches. But it's off the field, in the clubhouse — he is one of the best guys I've ever been around, to tell you the truth. How relaxed he stays, he keeps the clubhouse loose, he works with younger guys, talks through situations with them. He's just the ultimate pro.' Despite playing at Great American Ball Park, the Reds don't have anyone who has matched Schwarber's home run output. His 42 home runs are just two fewer than the total shared by the top three Reds in home runs this year: Elly De La Cruz (19), Spencer Steer (14) and Matt McLain (11). The thought of putting Schwarber behind De La Cruz in the lineup is tantalizing, but it would require the type of financial commitment the Reds haven't made in free agency. Advertisement 'I think he'd be a really productive baseball player in this ballpark, for sure,' said former Reds outfielder Nick Castellanos, who is in the fourth year of a five-year, $100 million contract he signed after exercising his opt-out with the Reds following the 2021 season. Castellanos made pointed comments about the Reds after signing with the Phillies, saying the fan base was 'suffocating because of ownership.' Castellanos didn't say anything about Reds ownership after Monday's game, but he did agree that signing Schwarber this offseason would take an unprecedented commitment from Reds ownership. 'I've always said that at some point in your career, if you would ask the childhood Kyle what team you'd like to play for, it would be Cincinnati,' Schwarber said. 'I think those are natural thoughts that it would be appealing. But you never know what happens in free agency. Going through it a couple of times now, it's an interesting scenario.'
