GK Matt Turner returns to Revolution on loan
August 1 - U.S. men's national team goalkeeper Matt Turner is returning to the New England Revolution on loan from French Ligue 1 club Olympique Lyonnais. Turner, the 2021 MLS Goalkeeper of the Year, recorded 22 clean sheets in 102 MLS starts for the Revolution from 2018-22. He was also named an MLS All-Star and made the MLS Best XI in 2021. "It is a privilege to return to the club that launched my career," Turner said. "The club that helped me discover who I am as a professional, the club that has always felt like a home away from home. "To have the chance to play in front of the Revolution supporters once again is a priceless feeling and one I've never taken for granted. My family and I have felt their unwavering support throughout these last three years, and I can't wait to wear the Revolution crest again at Gillette Stadium." The loan from Lyon runs through June 30, 2026 and includes an option to purchase. Turner, 31, will fill a designated player spot on the Revs' roster for the remainder of the 2025 season and then will become a TAM-eligible (targeted allocation money) player in 2026. "When the opportunity arose to bring Matt Turner back to the Revolution, we were glad to act swiftly to welcome one of the most talented players ever to represent the club," sporting director Curt Onalfo said. "Matt's talent and leadership will make our squad stronger now and in the future. We look forward to having Matt and his family back in New England." Turner left New England in February 2022 to join Premier League side Arsenal for a reported $6 million transfer fee. He moved to Nottingham Forest in 2023 and went on loan to Crystal Palace in 2024. He joined Lyon this summer in advance of the 2025-26 season. Turner has earned 52 caps with the USMNT, serving as the starter for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar and winning titles at the CONCACAF Gold Cup in 2021 and CONCACAF Nations League in 2022-23 and 2023-24. Slovenia's Aljaz Ivacic, 31, has been New England's primary goalkeeper this season, recording eight clean sheets in 24 starts. Yankees release RHP Marcus Stroman among post-deadline moves
August 1 - After more than a year and a half of struggles, veteran right-hander Marcus Stroman was released by the New York Yankees on Friday as they revamped their roster following Thursday's trade deadline. Stroman, 34, was 3-2 with a 6.23 ERA in nine starts this season, while spending 2 1/2 months on the injured list with a left knee injury. New York is set to have right-hander Luis Gil make his season debut Sunday after he missed four months with a lat injury. The Yankees also optioned right-handers Yerry De los Santos and Ian Hamilton to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. Before the trade deadline came to a conclusion Thursday, the Yankees revamped their bullpen by adding right-handers David Bednar (Pittsburgh Pirates), Camilo Doval (San Francisco Giants) and Jake Bird (Colorado Rockies). They also added infielder/outfielder Jose Caballero from the Tampa Bay Rays. All four were activated to the roster. Since joining the Yankees last season, Stroman went 13-11 with a 4.69 ERA in 39 appearances (38 starts). In 11 major league seasons with four clubs, including his first six with the Toronto Blue Jays, the two-time All-Star was 90-87 with a 3.79 ERA in 270 appearances (261 starts). De Los Santos, 27, had a 1.78 ERA in 17 relief appearances with the Yankees this season, while Hamilton, 30, was 2-1 with a 4.28 ERA in 36 appearances (one start). Bednar, 30, has 101 saves with the Pirates since 2021 and was 2-5 with a 2.37 ERA and 17 saves this season. Doval, 28, hads 107 saves in five seasons with the Giants and was 4-2 with a 3.09 ERA and 15 saves this season. Bird, 29, was 4-1 with a 4.73 ERA in 45 relief appearances with Colorado. Caballero, 28, was batting .226 with an American League-best 34 stolen bases for the Rays. NFL deals Red Zone, NFL Media assets to ESPN in billion-dollar agreement, the Athletic reports
Aug 1 (Reuters) - The NFL and Disney's (DIS.N), opens new tab ESPN have reached a deal, potentially worth billions, placing many of the league's media holdings with the sports network in exchange for equity in ESPN, the Athletic reported on Friday. ESPN is expected to have access to RedZone, NFL Network, seven more regular-season games and the NFL's fantasy football business, the report said, citing sources briefed on the agreement. There is also a possibility of integrating special features, including betting, and potentially more assets too. The four-year on-and-off discussions have led to what is said to be a complicated agreement, the Athletic report said. An official announcement is expected next week. Disney is set to report results on Wednesday. Both ESPN and the NFL declined to comment on the report when contacted by Reuters. The news of the deal comes as Disney is set to launch its new streaming service, named ESPN, this fall, providing access to ESPN networks, including professional and college football and basketball games. The new service will cost $29.99 per month and is part of the media company's effort to tap sports fans who have never subscribed to traditional television.
