DMW speeds up medical repatriation of ailing OFWs in Qatar
The Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) has pledged full support for ailing overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) in Qatar and is expediting their medical repatriation. In a statement, the DMW said officials led by Undersecretary Jainal Rasul, Assistant Secretary Venecio Legaspi and Labor Attaché Eduard Ferrer visited four ailing OFWs confined at Rumailah Hospital in Doha. One of them, a female patient who suffered a severe stroke, has been hospitalized since May. Her sibling has already been repatriated, while arrangements for her own return are ongoing. The officials also met with hospital personnel and Alma Balanon, the Medical Repatriation Coordinator for Filipinos in Qatar, to discuss necessary arrangements for transferring the patients to the Philippines. Balanon emphasized the need for support in visa processing and hospital acceptance in the Philippines to ensure a smooth transition and continuity of medical care. She added that several more patients are under evaluation for possible repatriation The DMW said the medical repatriation program in Qatar, which began in 2015, has facilitated the return of 28 OFWs in 2024. Eleven cases have been recorded this year, including one currently being processed. A follow-up mission is scheduled for mid-August to monitor the reintegration of repatriated OFWs and ensure continued government assistance.

Marcos vows to cut patient costs, eyes PhilHealth reform
President Ferdinand 'Bongbong' Marcos Jr. has pledged to reduce Filipinos' out-of-pocket healthcare costs, including patient contributions to PhilHealth, as part of his administration's goal to provide more accessible medical services. Speaking during the ceremonial turnover of patient transport vehicles on Wednesday, Marcos said that PhilHealth coverage is being expanded in terms of both scope and services. 'We're increasing PhilHealth's insurance coverage and expanding the services it provides,' the President said. Marcos acknowledged that patients still pay for some services but emphasized a gradual reduction in their financial contribution. 'Even when patients go for a check-up or treatment, they still contribute. We're working to bring that cost down slowly,' he said. The President expressed hope that, as the economy improves, contributions might eventually be eliminated, leaving only a minimal administrative fee. 'In other countries I've seen, patients only pay around a hundred pesos for administrative costs. That's our aspiration,' he added. However, he admitted that current funding is not enough to fully realize this vision. 'Our system isn't yet sufficient. Funding is always tight. But we are adjusting the budget carefully to accelerate healthcare improvements for the public,' Marcos explained. This initiative is part of a broader push by the administration to provide better financial protection and healthcare access for Filipinos.

Filipino nurse receives gift from UAE President for service during COVID-19
A Filipino nurse in the UAE has received a special token of gratitude from none other than UAE President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, in recognition of his selfless service as a frontline healthcare worker during the COVID-19 pandemic. In a TikTok video posted by @ Tito Michael shared his surprise and gratitude upon receiving a gold coin and a letter of appreciation—an initiative from the UAE leadership to honor the bravery and dedication of medical frontline workers. He shared that the letter, which accompanied the coin, expressed the President's appreciation to those who played a vital role in the country's pandemic response. 'It says here, 'To all of our frontline heroes, it is a great privilege to extend my sincere and heartfelt thanks to you for the vital role that you played in response to the COVID-19 pandemic,'' he read in the video. Tito Michael recalled how he served as a team leader in the ICU of his facility, stepping up during a time when critical care nurses were urgently needed. He said he had no idea how he managed to survive the ordeal, describing it as one of the most difficult periods in his nursing career. 'There were so many adjustments, and every shift was full of uncertainty,' he continued. 'Every single day, every single shift, lagi kaming nawawalan ng pasyente, and it was completely devastating.' He also opened up about the anxiety he felt each time he went to work, and how prayer became a source of strength amid the daily emotional toll. 'Grabe na lang talaga yung pag-pray ko every time ako papasok sa trabaho kasi hindi ko alam kung ano yung i-e-expect ko,' he added. Despite the hardship, Michael said the experience taught him a valuable lesson—that believing in oneself is essential, especially during a crisis. He noted that while support from family and friends is important, personal resolve is what ultimately sees someone through. As of writing, the video garnered 350K views and 11.5K reactions, earning praises both from Filipinos and Emiratis. 'Emirati here — You're not just frontliners, you're apart of us too. You have no idea how much we respect and appreciate you. I hope you know we have so much love towards all of you nurses. You were and still are our heroes,' a TikTok user commented.
