BigBasket to launch 10-minute food delivery across India by March 2026, executive says

BENGALURU (Reuters) -India's BigBasket plans to roll out 10-minute food delivery services nationwide by the end of fiscal 2026 as competition intensifies in the $7.1 billion quick-commerce space, its executive told Reuters on Tuesday.
The Tata-backed grocery giant will take on established players such as Swiggy's Snacc, Blinkit's Bistro and Zepto Cafe, which already deliver coffee and ready-to-eat snacks in less than 15 minutes.
BigBasket is targeting customers of the existing food delivery firms such as Zomato and Swiggy while also unlocking a new pool of customers, co-founder Vipul Parekh told Reuters.
It plans to use dark stores to fuel the service, Parekh added, extending its foothold in India's booming quick-commerce market, which Blume Venture's Indus Valley report calls the "fastest-growing industry segment ever."
Dark stores are small warehouses in densely populated neighbourhood buildings, where delivery partners, typically two-wheeler riders, pick up groceries or food for delivery.
BigBasket, which brought online grocery delivery service to India in 2011, aims to increase its dark store count from about 700 currently to 1,000-1,200 by the end of 2025.
Following a pilot run that began a month ago in the southern city of Bengaluru, the food delivery service will now be expanded to 40 dark stores by July-end, Parekh said.
Currently, about 5%-10% of BigBasket's customers who are offered the service are clubbing quick-food items with their normal online orders, but this is expected to grow further, he added.
The menu will comprise items from coffee chain Starbucks and Indian Hotels' food arm Qmin, both part of the Tata group in India. No external restaurants will be partnered with, the firm said.
Meanwhile, Parekh dismissed media reports of BigBasket seeking external investors for fundraising and reiterated the company's plan to go public within the next 18-24 months.
"One of the advantages we have is, being a part of Tata Group, you have enough internal capital available."

Overall EV registrations fell 4.4% in April compared to a year ago, the first year-over-year decline since February 2024, per S&P Global Mobility data. EV market share in April fell to 6.6% from 7.4% a year ago. Every Tesla electric vehicle model saw a sales drop in April except for the Model 3 sedan. Following Q2 earnings, Tesla said the switchover to the new Model Y SUV led to a production shutdown at its factories around the globe, hurting production. Nevertheless, Tesla's sales drop in April reflects a recent worrying pattern for the company seen in European sales data. Per the European Automobile Manufacturers Association (ACEA), Tesla EV registrations in Europe fell a whopping 49% in April compared to a year ago, to 14,228. Earlier this month, data from France's PFA national auto lobby reported new Tesla registrations dropped 67% in May to 721 units, with overall sales down 47% year to date. Mobility Sweden reported Tesla EV registrations tumbled 53.7% to 503 units in the country in May from a year earlier. Demand weakness in the EU and recent protests at US Tesla showrooms follow CEO Elon Musk's foray into politics, causing some Tesla owners to become alienated by Musk, specifically by his right-leaning tendencies, leadership of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), and outward support of President Trump. In the US, concerns over the loss of federal EV tax credits (among other issues) led CEO Elon Musk to wage a surprising war of words with President Trump, which has only recently begun to cool off. While tensions appear to be waning, Musk and Tesla now have to deal with the potential brand hit Tesla took because of Musk's support for Trump and now backlash from the right due to his attack on the Trump-backed budget bill. Tesla's brand issues do not include the actual competitive threats Tesla is facing from legacy automakers too. Chevrolet, with its Equinox EV and Blazer EV, is taking market share, and GM's Cadillac brand has popular luxury EVs like the Lyriq and Optiq, which boosted registrations by 104% compared to a year ago in April. This could be, in part, why Tesla late Thursday night revealed refreshed versions of its higher-end Model S sedan and Model X SUV to better compete in the luxury segment. The role of Elon Musk's SpaceX in the Trump administration's Golden Dome missile project is reportedly in doubt following the feud between the billionaire and President Donald Trump last week. Musk's company appeared to be the frontrunner to begin work on the ambitious project to create a missile shield over America, a project that would have pocketed Musk billions. But after last week's explosive breakup, which Musk has since attempted some damage control, the project is in jeopardy, three people familiar with plans told Reuters. 'Because of the blowup, the Pentagon has been given the space to look at other alternatives,' one of the people told the news agency. The White House said in a statement that any decision on the project would be made 'prioritizing the best deal for America and leveraging the most advanced and innovative technology.' A spokesperson added that the administration 'is committed to a rigorous review process for all bids and contracts.' A senior Defense Department official told Reuters that the Pentagon 'has no announcements regarding future contracts associated with the Golden Dome effort.' If SpaceX misses out on the project, it would signal the significance of the president's personal relationships when it comes to his leadership, aerospace and defense experts said. 'That people guiding the program or building it are approved based on their political affiliation signals a real concern that the project itself is very politicized and not being conducted on the technical merits,' Laura Grego, a missile defense expert and research director at the non-profit Union of Concerned Scientists, told Reuters. Dutch government supports NATO spending target of 5% of GDP

THE HAGUE (Reuters) -The Dutch caretaker government is in favour of increasing the country's defence spending to a total of 5% of gross domestic product, in line with a target set by NATO, Defence Minister Ruben Brekelmans said on Friday. "The government supports the new NATO norm to spend 3.5% on defence and 1.5% on defence-related measures," Brekelmans said in a post on X. "Given the increasing threats this is necessary to keep the Netherlands safe." At a NATO summit this month in The Hague, alliance members are expected to agree to an overall military spending target of 5% of GDP, with 3.5% of GDP going to core military spending and another 1.5% for defence and security-related investments.
