I'm a Gen Z interior designer. Here are 4 trends I absolutely love and 4 I think are dated.
I'm a Gen Z interior designer. I see many trends that I think are timeless, and some I don't love. I can't get enough of thrifted furniture, the checkerboard pattern, and bold lighting choices. On the other hand, I'm not a fan of stark-white decor, pot lights, or animal print. As a Gen Z interior designer, I love helping people utilize the latest trends to create a cozy space. Since studying interior design in the US, Florence, and London and graduating this past summer, I've even built a TikTok following by sharing several of my favorite Gen Z-approved decorating tips. Here are some of the Gen Z trends I think are timeless, and the ones I recommend that you ignore. I love how Gen Z uses color. I've noticed that Gen Z is especially loving dark greens, lively blues, and cheerful pinks. I like it, especially since incorporating colors is one of the least expensive and most impactful tools for designing your space. My favorite trick for creating a timeless design is starting with neutral-colored bigger furniture, like a couch, then adding brighter hues through smaller, easily interchangeable elements. For example, colorful pillows, throw blankets, plants, table lamps, and artwork. The right hues can truly make a space look spectacular, and swapping colorful accessories is the most convenient way to create a fresh look. Secondhand furniture is the way to go. One of my favorite trends in interior design right now is appreciating previously loved, secondhand furniture. You can often find good-quality, beautiful pieces for cheap through Facebook marketplace, on furniture exchange sites, and at estate sales. Keep your eye out for upholstered chairs, dressers, coffee tables, and dining chairs. Examine the quality and design, and consider the potential. You can also update older pieces to make them spectacular: Take off lacquer and showcase a natural-wood finish or slap on a coat of paint and use some modern, fun fabrics. Bold lighting choices are your best friend. Right now, I see more Gen Zers choosing bold, interesting lighting choices. Whether it's oversized chandeliers in the entryway, sweeping floor lamps in the living room, or bathroom backlighting that makes you look like a supermodel, I'm here for it all. Lighting is quite literally another form of art, so be bold. I can't get enough of checkered patterns. One of my favorite trends is the checkered pattern because I think it's a fun way to add a sense of playfulness to a room. I'm a big fan of checkered carpets, pillows, and flooring in an entrance. I'd argue that the checkered pattern is timeless — not only because it has a long history on game boards, but also because there can be so much variation in the actual pattern. On the other hand, I can't support cheaply made, mass-produced furniture. Although I can't always avoid it, I want to say goodbye to mass-produced, cheaply-made furniture. In addition to looking cheap, many mass-produced pieces are not made to last. In particular, I'd suggest staying away from high-traffic furniture that can deteriorate fast. For example, a cheap sofa will sag in time, and coffee spills can stain a cheap table. On the other hand, I'm done with stark-white decor. Stark white has reigned supreme in the design world but, in my opinion, it's on its way out. Though stark-white walls can make a room look large and clean, they can also easily make it appear sterile and harsh. Opt for softer whites, and combine them with warmer elements like natural wood and soft textures like blankets, rugs, and window treatments. Walking into a room with pot lights makes me feel tense. At some point, designers fell in love with pot lights, but I'm still just not a fan. Pot lights, or recessed lights on the ceiling, are a great way to illuminate an entire room, but they often fail to be warm and inviting. Be sure to vary the type of lighting within your space through table lamps, cabinet backlighting, or even art spotlights. I promise that you'll see an instant, dramatic change in your space. I'm ready to say goodbye to animal print. I've never been a fan of animal print — well, let's ignore that one year of my childhood when I was obsessed with "The Cheetah Girls." There are so many interesting patterns and prints you can use in your space, but for me, a zebra stripe just doesn't cut it. I think animal print can often make your space look tacky. If you're looking for a pattern, I'd opt for something more cheerful, like checkers. This story was originally published on September 18, 2023, and most recently updated on August 8, 2025.

35 Problem-Solving Products That Really, Truly Work And Have The Before-And-After Photos To Prove It

A Shark Tank-approved tattoo aftercare salve you should really consider if you want to protect your new investment. It's designed with just seven vegan ingredients (like beeswax and shea butter) to soothe, protect, and enhance your ink, no matter how long you've been working on completing that sleeve. A Briotech spray that uses hypochlorous acid, an ingredient found naturally in our white blood cells, to help strengthen your skin barrier and soothe rashes, sunburns, rosacea, eczema, and other skin irritations. It's similar to certain spendier refresh sprays but without the cute bottle tax. A fabric defuzzer capable of refreshing furniture and clothing that've been looking a Your cat-scratched ottoman and pilled-up sweatshirts don't need to be replaced — they just need a little TLC. Fruit and veggie wash because just rinsing with water doesn't feel like enough, and using actual soap feels like too much. This spray is the middle ground and helps safely remove wax, soil, and handling residue. Promising review: "This stuff is great and I have ordered it several times. In the past, I just rinsed fruit or vegetables, but I was at the grocery store recently and saw a very cute kid touching all the fruit. He also had a runny nose and I just thought, 'better remember to really wash the fruit when I get home.' The great thing about Veggie Wash is you can feel the wax film wash off of certain fruit. It really does a great job of cleaning and doesn't leave any odd smell or taste. As I said, I've bought this before and make sure my kitchen always has a spray bottle nearby." —Me in SoCalGet two spray bottles from Amazon for $14.82. A pet brush with thin, long teeth capable of getting to the undercoat. A good brushing means a silkier coat — and best of all, less shedding. Promising review: "This brush is awesome!! I highly recommend it. I even bought another one to have just in case something happened to the first one. I have 3 Shiba Inu dogs. Every spring, they shed their 'second coat.' I have tried 6 different brushes over the past 3-4 years, including the Furminato,r and they have hated them all. They either pull and cause pain, or they don't work. This brush is not expensive, not painful, removes gobs of hair easily and I think it may help my dogs shed less. I wish I had found it first. I could have saved money and spared my dogs' painful experiences trying all the other brushes." —BeckyGet it from Amazon for $12.99. A box of Color Catcher sheets to prevent the dreaded "all my clothes are now pink from this one stray red sock" debacle. These handy sheets are designed to grab any dye that leaks or bleeds so you can keep enjoying your white tees. Promising review: "These Color Catcher sheets really protect colors from bleeding. It makes all clothes/laundry brighter and looking like new — not that old washed color after just one wash without these sheets. I give this product 5+ stars. Highly recommend. A few pennies spent additionally on your laundry makes one look like wearing new clothes all the time." —NikitaGet 72 sheets from Amazon for $11.53. A dry shampoo powder offering a welcome refresh to hair that's almost ready to be washed. Almost. Promising review: "I love that this is a powder and not a stinky aerosol spray. That also means that this lasts MUCH longer. I use it every other day when I don't wash my hair since I have very oily roots. I've been using it for almost a month, and barely any is missing out of the bottle. A little goes a long way." — it from Amazon for $16.99 (available in two scents). A jar of O'Keeffe's Working Hands cream with beeswax and glycerin to give you the baby soft hands you haven't seen since you were, well, a baby. Promising review: "Loved how it healed my dry and cracked fingers. Works quickly! This cream is wonderful — my fingers would not heal without it. Found it years ago and continue to use it when needed. I also bought the body cream which I like very much. Works great on dry skin!! Highly recommend both!" —Happy at 77Get it from Amazon for $9.05. A suction tool to help relieve the itchy agony of bug bites by sucking out insect venom, saliva, and other irritants under your skin. Finally, you can go outside after dark again! Make sure you read all the directions before using so you don't accidentally give yourself a hickey. I've used this, and it really works!Promising review: "I am a magnet for bites of all kinds and carry topical and medicines with me at all times — so I figured this would be a good product to see if it really works. I woke up with a bug bite on my arm, so I used this little tool (three times per the instructions) — immediately after using it, it stopped itching! And less than 24 hours later, the bump/bite gone! There is a very faint red mark from using the thing, but a small price to pay IMO. Bottom line: it's awesome. I'm carrying it with me everywhere!" —Rebecca Get it from Amazon for $9.95+ (available in three colors and various multipacks). A pack of pimple patches that can suck out all the gross gunk in your face overnight. Pimples suddenly don't feel like a big deal. Just apply these to pimples after washing your face and let them go to review: "I have been using Mighty Patches for about four or five months now. Mighty Patch is a TOTAL GAME CHANGER; you put it on your blemish, usually at night after your beauty routine, and you wake to find that nasty pimple has almost completely been absorbed into the patch. I won't lie; my pimples sometimes require another patch. But on day one of use, you'll notice the patch taking away the nasty. At this point, your blemish may be at the last stage of healing, and the Mighty Patch sucked out all of the festering inducing mess, or like myself, I put on another patch the next night and again, more gunk taken out, and more healing has happened. Either way, regardless, this, to me, ALWAYS WORKS. Thanks to Mighty Patch my skin has changed. It's healed, there are no acne "tattoos" on my face from my popping and them scarring. This, to me, is a must-have for anyone in their beauty bag. It covers the pimple to protect it from outside bacteria and pollution; it absorbs the bacteria and pimple-causing debris from the skin, all while being hardly visible. I'm in love with this product." —HilaryGet 36 patches from Amazon for $12.99 (also available in packs of 72). A shoe stretch spray if you have a pair of gorgeous loafers or boots you love but never of the agonizing pain that comes with it. This spray will gradually stretch them out without staining or fading and is likely more effective than the freezer trick. A roll of marble contact paper to give your home an instant dash of glamor. Reviewers like to use it on previously drab kitchen tables, bathroom counters, and Ikea furniture. A hair-finishing stick that works like a plant oil-covered mascara wand to flatten those annoying flyaway hairs on the back of your neck or around your hairline. Or an edge control gel to help lay edges and baby hairs for a sleek look without the unwanted flaking and residue. It hydrates and helps strengthen your hair with the power beeswax and castor oil, and can be used on both wet and dry hair. Liquid plant food that's pretty much a multivitamin for your houseplant. If your green little buddy isn't growing as much as you'd like, consider a couple of drops of this elixir! A fungal nail renewal formula to revitalize your tootsies by thickening nails and reducing discoloration. Feel free to plan to wear open-toed shoes next week — reviewers started noticing a visible difference within days. Juno & Co.'s Clean 10 Cleansing Balm made with a blend of pearl barley and vitamin E to completely obliterate every speck of makeup on your face. Seriously, you'll feel so fresh and baby-faced, you'll wonder if that eyeliner was really as smudge-proof as you previously thought. As someone who refuses to take off rings before washing dishes, showering, etc., I need this! A Catrice "Instant Awake" Under Eye Brightener to expertly conceal and brighten dark circles under your eyes. The lightweight, color-adapting formula blends so seamlessly under makeup that your old concealer will throw itself out. A wildly popular hair serum packed with vitamin E, aloe vera, and argan oil to ensure your mane stays silky soft and frizz-free, no matter how gross the weather gets. A set of thick velvet slipcovers to instantly transform your drab couch into something new and fabulous. Goodbye, stain-covered gray couch and HELLO new couch of my HGTV dreams. A hypoallergenic makeup brush-cleaning "shampoo" for your worn bristles that could use their own makeover. A bottle of sulfate-free biotin shampoo that thousands of reviewers have said helped volumize their hair. The biotin can help fill out thinning hair and the nourishing ingredients like rosemary oil, zinc, and coconut oil can help moisturize. A live, self-sustaining Venus fly trap lightbulb you can watch flourish, no matter what color your thumb is. You can remove and replant when it gets too big! The plant comes in a gel that has all the nutrients it needs to survive. It should outgrow its home in about 4–6 months. Promising review: "I was pretty sure I'd love this, but had no idea how much! I'm the 'mom' to three full-sized Venus fly traps, and it's so fascinating to see this baby in its beginning growth stage. Sort of like marveling at the tiny fingernails on a newborn infant, I'm captivated by the tiny but perfectly formed traps. Looking forward to watching it grow!" —Siri JeffreyGet it from Amazon for $8.99. A fancy switch plate cover because HELLO everything in your home can and should be fancy as all heck. A scar cream that'll help you heal painful reminders of past injuries. No longer will you be haunted by that time you spilled boiling hot pasta water on your foot! Promising review: "In November, I dropped my hair straightener on my ankle, causing a serious burn. Once it became a scar, it was very dark and purple. I ordered this at the end of December and applied it every night after the shower and it is almost completely gone! I am very happy with the product because I never thought it would go away! 10/10 recommend!" —David BouchelleGet it from Amazon for $16.79. A Bevel safety razor providing a super-close, bump-free shave on anything from your face to your body to your head. Bonus: It's specially designed to be extra helpful for thick, curly hair. Promising review: "As an African American man, I've always been more susceptible to razor bumps and ingrown hairs due to curlier hair. Gillette was my go-to for shaving because it did better with sensitive skin and was good for shaving quickly. However, of course, Gillette is more of a one-size-fits-all razor brand and doesn't account for some of the nuances some men have to deal with when shaving. I looked for a razor blade that would assist in minimizing razor bumps and ingrown hairs, and that's where Bevel comes in. Firstly, I'm very happy to support a Black-owned brand that addresses some of the unique grooming issues of Black men, so cheers to that! Secondly, because I was switching from a Gillette razor, there was a bit of a learning curve in terms of shaving technique and how long the shaving process took. I definitely cut up my chin and jawline the first few times using this razor. However, as I continued to use it more and adjusted to the various holding angles for the different parts of my face, the shave got much easier, and the results were noticeable (after about 8 months of use). The shave is much closer, so my face is much smoother. Initially when using this razor, I did get a couple of razor bumps, but now that I'm accustomed, I get none! The shave lasts about two days longer than when I use a Gillette razor, and the razor and blades are very finely weighted and crafted, so once you understand the different angles, you can maneuver around your face with ease." —ShawnGet the razor and five blades from Amazon for $46.74+ (available in two colors). A two-pack of rust-removing gel spray – you may be tempted to say "abracadabra" as you use it. It's that magical! The powerful gel clings to rust on contact, so you can watch stains start melting off your tiles immediately; no scrubbing needed. A closet organizer *and* shirt folder that will finally address your — quite frankly — alarming dresser. Instead of balled-up tees crammed into drawers, you can enjoy neatly folded T-shirts that are easy to flip through.

I've slept on dozens of sheets in search of my forever pair. Cozy Earth's bamboo sheets are the one.
As a hot sleeper who loves snuggling in bed with velvety sheets, bamboo fabric is my best friend. I'm always preaching the gospel of the best bamboo sheets when people ask me for bedding recommendations. Imagine the feel of a cotton sateen sheet without all the sweating, a piece of bedding that's both soft AND breathable. Pure magic. Bamboo sheets are, undoubtedly, one of my favorite bedding materials especially when it comes to cooling sheets. Earlier this year, I reviewed the Quince Bamboo Sheet Set. I loved them, thinking that no bamboo sheets could possibly top their silky, cool-to-the-touch feel. But when I tried Cozy Earth's Bamboo Sheet Set, I was proven wrong. Cozy Earth specializes in premium bedding and is known for high-quality bamboo products like sheets, pajamas, and duvets. These sheets are literally the softest I've ever used, making crawling into bed at night one of the best parts of my day. Here's how Cozy Earth's sheets became my favorite of all time — the sheets I want on my bed forever. Design and materials Cozy Earth's bamboo sheets are crafted from viscose from bamboo — a material made from bamboo fibers. Bamboo is a naturally cooling and breathable material that's also incredibly soft. I recommend bamboo for hot sleepers who crave softness without trapping heat. Cozy Earth's sheets come in 11 soft, neutral colors like oat and dove gray in sizes ranging from twin/twin XL to California king, including a split king. I tried the Peony shade, a gorgeous soft pink. There aren't any bright colors or fun designs — a bit of a bummer if you love vibrant or patterned sheets like me — but this is probably attributed to the fact that Cozy Earth avoids using harsh dyes in its products. Recently, Cozy Earth added two new simple pinstripe sets to the collection — it's first prints. Cozy Earth sells its sheets in sets with a fitted and flat sheet and two pillowcases (one if buying a twin), with no option to buy pieces individually or sans flat sheet. They also offer the bamboo bedding in a duvet cover and sell bundles if you want to buy everything in one go. For instance, the core bundle includes a bamboo duvet cover and two extra pillowcases. The fitted sheet has a pocket depth of 20 inches and will fit on the deepest of mattresses. Even the top sheet is a little oversized to fully engulf your mattress. Our review of the Cozy Earth Bamboo Sheet Set Comfort and cooling Cozy Earth's bamboo sheets might literally be the most comfortable sheets I've ever tried — and I'm a tricky customer. I'm a hot sleeper, so I prioritize cooling and breathability above all else. At the same time, I also love the silky softness that usually comes with warmer sheets like cotton sateen or flannel. It's nearly impossible to find a set of sheets that do both, but somehow, Cozy Earth has done it. First of all, these sheets are, no exaggeration, the absolute softest sheets that I've ever used. Bamboo is known for its softness, but Cozy Earth's sheets go a step beyond, with an ultra-velvety feel. When I slip into bed between Cozy Earth's sheets, I feel the stress and worries of the day melt away. Even my boyfriend — who is sensitive to certain textures and picky about his bedding — attests that these sheets are fantastic. Before I started testing bedding, we used a fleece blanket instead of a top sheet, since we liked the softness against our skin. My boyfriend has been resistant to the top sheet change, but the bamboo top sheet is so soft we don't even think about the fleece blanket anymore (although I still understand and respect those who prefer not to use a top sheet). But they're not just soft: they're breathable and cooling, too. I tested these sheets in the peak of summer when Indiana was going through its humid cornsweat season, and it's like a fiery swamp outside. Despite these conditions, I slept easily each night. Even when testing specific cooling sheets, there's always been at least one night that I wake up in a sweat, but I'm happy to report that I never experienced this with Cozy Earth's sheets on my bed. At the same time, though, I was never too cold — I always felt perfectly comfortable with a regulated temperature. A perfect fit Cozy Earth's sheets also fit the bed well. I'm a restless sleeper, so I need a sheet that fits snugly on my mattress without slipping off at night. I'm impressed by Cozy Earth's bamboo sheets because they fit on my mattress, regardless of height. I've been testing mattress toppers, adding three to four inches to my already thick mattress, but these sheets can handle it, with 20-inch deep pockets. Made to last Beyond softness, where Cozy Earth sheets stand out is in their durability. I've washed this set four times, and despite a small loss of sheen, I've noticed no difference in the sheet's texture. There's no pilling, loose threads, or visible scratches. Plus, the sheets feel even softer after each wash. The durability is especially impressive, given that my dog likes to nest with his claws before he goes to sleep. Other sheets I've tried have given way to his nails, either snagging or ripping completely, but Cozy Earth's bamboo set has stayed strong. I'm looking forward to continuing to wash and use this set to observe it for signs of wear and tear. They still look as good as new after months, and if my predictions are correct, they'll hold up to years of use. Care The Cozy Earth bamboo sheets are simple to care for and follow standard wash instructions. I wash with detergent with cool or cold water on a gentle setting, then transfer them to the dryer to tumble dry on low. I recommend removing the sheets from the dryer right away, as they tend to wrinkle when left in the dryer for too long. Cozy Earth also suggests washing sheets separately, especially from towels to avoid lint. I was careful not to use fabric softeners or harsh chemicals like bleach, which can break down the bamboo fibers. For more tips on caring for bamboo sheets, I recommend checking out our how to wash sheets article. Value Cozy Earth bamboo sheets are expensive — a queen-size set will cost $297. They're extraordinarily comfortable and durable, but I think they're a tad overpriced, especially compared to competitors. Fortunately, Cozy Earth frequently runs promotions around holiday shopping events like Memorial Day or Black Friday, where I've noticed you can save as much as 35% off. Cozy Earth offers a 100-night trial and a 10-year warranty. If you decide they aren't for you within 100 nights, you can return them for a full refund. The sheets are protected from "pilling, abnormal rips and tears, and workmanship defects" within 10 years of the purchase date. If you use your warranty, you'll receive a replacement product. Cons to consider The main drawback? These sheets are expensive. Almost $300 for a queen-size set is nothing to sneeze at. Bamboo sheets are, in general, more expensive than cotton sheets, but Cozy Earth's bamboo set is one of the most expensive on the market. You're paying for quality and durability, so it's a worthwhile investment, but it's definitely not a small expense. Otherwise, we've noticed that the sheets lose their sheen after washing, something that Cozy Earth notes is normal for bamboo sheets. The sheets are on the thinner side, which helps with their airiness, but light colors are see-through. I can see my mattress and pillow logos through the fitted sheet and pillowcase. If that will bother you, I'd opt for a darker color like navy or charcoal. Mattress and pillow protectors can also help for a seamless, logo-free look. As you can see by the pictures, the sheets are also prone to wrinkling, even when cared for properly. It's difficult to get a crisp, clean, made bed look with the top sheet. What are your alternatives? The best overall pick in our best bamboo sheets guide is the Quince Bamboo Sheet Set. Like Cozy Earth's bamboo sheets, Quince's version is made with 100% viscose from bamboo for silky, cooling sheets. Quince's sheets aren't as durable as the Cozy Earth sheets — they're prone to pilling and loose threads.. I've tried both and ultimately prefer the feeling of the Cozy Earth sheets, since they're much thicker. Even so, Quince's bamboo sheet set is hundreds of dollars less than Cozy Earth's set, so they're much more affordable. Read our Quince Bamboo Sheet Set review. For affordable bamboo sheets, I recommend the Bampure Bamboo Sheet Set. The fitted sheet has an additional corner strap elastic band, so you won't have to worry about your top sheet slipping off the bed. For more recommendations, read our best bamboo sheets and best sheets guides. The bottom line The Cozy Earth Bamboo Sheet Set is one of the best investments you can make for your bed. The set is a splurge, but it's impressively durable, with a generous trial and warranty policy. If you're on the hunt for the softest set of breathable sheets and you're willing to spend a little extra, I wholly recommend Cozy Earth's bamboo sheets.
