Hartsfield-Jackson moving forward with cell service infrastructure deal after city council approval
Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport announced Thursday that they were going to start upgrades for enhancing wireless service on the grounds.
According to officials, the Atlanta City Council approved carrier agreements for a distributed antenna system at the airport last Monday.

Now that it's been approved by Mayor Andre Dickens, the airport will begin the process of upgrading its wireless services and improving cellular coverage throughout the passenger facilities.
The carriers that will work with the airport to complete the work and provide services were T-Mobile and AT&T, officials said.

'As the gateway to our city and the world, Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport must meet and exceed the digital demands of today's travelers and tomorrow's innovations. This upgrade ensures our airport remains a global leader in connectivity, safety, and the overall passenger experience.'
According to the announcement, the upgrade will transition the airport from 4G infrastructure to 5G, with mechanisms in place to allow any future carrier's signal, including expansion of service with other partners.
Airport officials said the upgrades will also improve passenger experiences, upgrade radio signal distribution for public safety personnel and further reinforce the facility's commitment to safety and operational excellence.
Right now, the airport said it was using 'outdated equipment that has reached end-of-life,' with limited parts available for repairs and a design that makes it difficult to modernize.
'As the world's busiest and most efficient airport, we are committed to delivering a world-class travel experience in every dimension — including connectivity,' said ATL General Manager Ricky Smith. 'This DAS upgrade is a critical step in future-proofing our facility and meeting the digital expectations of our guests.'

MARTA Selects CDM Smith to Design the Largest Bus Rapid Transit System in the State of Georgia
The effort is MARTA's largest BRT project to date. MARTA, a metro system in Georgia, has selected CDM Smith to design the largest bus rapid transit system in the state. Atlanta, May 30, 2025 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- CDM Smith was selected by the Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA) to design the Clayton County Southlake Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) Alignment and Airport Connectivity project. CDM Smith and its partners will design approximately 15 miles of BRT with an elevated guideway into Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport. The effort is MARTA's largest BRT project to date. This project will greatly improve Clayton County residents' access to job opportunities and education and will open doors for further transit-oriented development in the area. Direct premium transit service to the Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport and MARTA's rail system will greatly contribute to the local and regional economies. Planning and design work is funded by the one-cent sales tax approved by Clayton County voters in 2014. The project has submitted an application for a Small Starts grant award from the Federal Transit Administration's Capital Investment Grants (CIG) program. The current project budget is $355.6 million. In service of its goal to provide premium transit service throughout the county, the BRT system design will include an elevated guideway, elevated bus stations, and a pedestrian bridge connector to the airport terminal and MARTA train station. The design phase of this project will take two years to complete. Construction is estimated to take place from 2028 through 2030. Pastor Jamal Bryant is calling for a nationwide boycott of Dollar General stores, urging the retailer to do more than just operate in underserved communities, but to invest in them as well. Cars trapped, questions unanswered: Frustration grows after JIA parking garage fire
Nearly two weeks after a massive fire tore through a parking garage at Jacksonville International Airport, drivers with cars still trapped inside say they're frustrated by the lack of answers. Zachary Willis is one of them. 'It's more just very annoying,' Willis told Action News Jax. 'We don't know where to go. I don't know if I should be truck shopping, trying to contact my insurance.' His truck is still stuck on the third level of the airport's hourly garage, and despite the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) saying photos should be allowed, Willis said he hasn't been able to see the damage. >>> STREAM ACTION NEWS JAX LIVE <<< 'I know my vehicle is in the restricted area,' Willis said. 'They were like, 'We don't have it registered.' Until yesterday, when they said, 'We've identified your tag.' I'm like, oh, that's interesting.' Willis said the airport call center hasn't been much help, and communication has been inconsistent. According to the Jacksonville Aviation Authority, about 100 vehicles remain trapped inside the garage. An estimated 50 cars were damaged or burned in the fire. Some of the impacted drivers are now turning to legal help. 'I've reviewed every single one of these cases that's come into the office,' said Ryan Will, an attorney with Morgan & Morgan. He said the firm is representing about 20 clients affected by the fire. 'What we've informed all of our clients is the statute of limitations in the state of Florida is two years,' Will explained. 'The State Fire Marshal is working to determine the origin and the cause of the fire.' Will said each case is different, and proving negligence will depend on the results of that investigation and what evidence is uncovered. Jacksonville City Councilmember and State Farm agent Matt Carlucci said his and his wife's vehicles were also in the garage — but they were able to get them out last week. 'But a lot of people were not as lucky,' Carlucci said. He's encouraging drivers to contact their insurance providers now. 'Call your insurance company,' Carlucci said. 'Say, 'Can we file a pre-claim?' I think by now, if they haven't gotten their car back, in all likelihood, they very well may have damage.' The Jacksonville Aviation Authority has contacted most of the 700 vehicle owners affected but said it is still working to reach the remaining few.
