Dortmund, Frankfurt make Champions League in Germany

The Advertiser17-05-2025

Borussia Dortmund and Eintracht Frankfurt have secured berths in the Champions League as the Bundesliga season reached its dramatic climax, with Heidenheim confirmed in the relegation play-off spot.
Frankfurt won 3-1 at rivals Freiburg and Dortmund eased past already-relegated Holstein Kiel 3-0 thanks to Serhou Guirassy, Marcel Sabitzer and Felix Nmecha, leaving Freiburg in a Europa League spot having yet again narrowly missed out on the Champions League.
Dortmund have rocketed up the table in recent weeks under Niko Kovac, having been 11th when he was appointed in January.
"If you had said in March that we would be in the Champions League, people would have said you were stupid. We are very, very happy," Dortmund captain Emre Can told Sky.
"Mentality has been key. Niko is someone who cares about the small details," Can added. "He is a bit old school. He has really helped."
Mainz edged RB Leipzig to the Conference League slot after a 2-2 draw at home to Bayer Leverkusen sealed by Jonathan Burkardt's penalty.
Leipzig will not be in Europe for the first time since their Bundesliga debut in 2016-17 following a shock 3-2 home defeat by mid-table VfB Stuttgart, who can grab a Europa League spot by beating third-tier Arminia Bielefeld in next Saturday's German Cup final.
Heidenheim needed a large goal difference swing to pull St Pauli or Hoffenheim into trouble and avoid finishing third-bottom in the play-off spot. The 4-1 home defeat by mid-table Werder Bremen made any mathematics irrelevant.
St Pauli lost 2-0 at home to already-relegated Bochum and hosts Hoffenheim were beaten 4-0 by long-crowned champions Bayern Munich, whose departing veteran Thomas Muller played what is set to be his last Bundesliga game while Harry Kane got on the scoresheet one last time this campaign.
The 35-year-old Muller recently wrapped up a record-extending 13th Bundesliga title but will not stay in the German top flight out of respect for his so far only club Bayern.
"People have been bidding me farewell for six weeks," he joked to Sky about the time since his exit announcement.
"It was a lot of fun. The time was crazy. The Bundesliga has always been my league, to play so many games is obviously nice.
"I wanted to score but only to win the game, not as a farewell goal. Football is about winning."
Muller made his Bundesliga debut for Bayern way back in 2008 and has made 503 league appearances. He might still turn out for Bayern at the Club World Cup from mid-June but is then widely expected to go to the MLS, also in the United States.
Meanwhile, Kane finished the season as Bundesliga top scorer for the second straight campaign with 26 goals, saying afterwards that winning the title this time made the honour much sweeter.
"It is what I have been waiting for. It is a special feeling," he said after netting off the bench. "It was nice to finish with another goal."
Heidenheim will face the third-placed team in the second tier - currently Elversberg - over two legs on Thursday and the following Monday for a place in next season's Bundesliga.
SV Hamburg have already secured promotion and Cologne are favourites to join them on the second-tier's final day on Sunday.
In two games with nothing to play for, Borussia Monchengladbach were undone 1-0 at home by Wolfsburg while Union Berlin overcame Augsburg 2-1 away in storied referee Felix Brych's last game.

Goldfields product tipped for lucrative Italian contract

Goldfields-born water polo star Luke Pavillard is set to continue his decorated career with Pro Recco as the Italian powerhouse looks to bolster its ranks after a long line of departures. Pavillard has been linked to Pro Recco since early this year after an official contract offer. The 29-year-old is not on Pro Recco's 2025 team list and club officials have yet to confirm any incoming reinforcements. However, a European source last week reported Pavillard would be among the star non-European replacements for up to seven departures that include fellow Australian Aaron Younger. Founded in 1913, Pro Recco has won the lucrative Champions League a record 11 times. Pavillard was last year among the best performers in national men's team the Aussie Sharks that finished eighth at the Paris Olympics by scoring 14 goals in seven games. He also boasts a gold medal and a silver medal playing for Australia in tournaments dating back to 2017 and 2022, respectively. The Aussie Sharks have been in the US training with the American team before heading to similar camps in Thailand alongside the Croatian and Serbian national teams. Serbia are the reigning Olympic champions, with the Asian camps considered vital lead-ups for the Sharks ahead of the World Cup that starts in Singapore on July 12. Pavillard took up water polo in Perth during his early teens thanks to the influence of his father Hugh. Hugh Pavillard arrived in the Goldfields in the mid-1980s and was a key figure when water polo was among the biggest participation sports at the old Lord Forrest Olympic Pool. It included a mid-1990s stint on the State League roster of the now-defunct Goldfields Vikings. After the family left the region in about 1998, a young Luke began his water polo journey with the Melville Sharks at the Bicton Baths. He missed selection for the Tokyo Olympics, but moved into the professional ranks with a three-year contract with Barceloneta in the Champions League.

Ange Postecoglou sacked: Tottenham face player revolt over coach's sacking

In the aftermath of winning his first trophy with Tottenham, captain Son Heung-min said: 'He [Postecoglou] won the trophy. Nobody did it, so …. look, it is not up to me or the players, but we just have to look at the facts, at the fact that we have not won in 17 years, today is the day we finally won it. It is the manager who wins the trophy. So we see what is going to happen.' Son left some teammates and staff with the impression that he could leave Tottenham this summer and there is believed to be interest in the South Korean from Saudi Arabia. Atletico Madrid want to sign defender Cristian Romero, another player who was close to Postecoglou. Levy was not directly quoted in the Tottenham statement that confirmed Postecoglou's sacking. It said: 'Following a review of performances and after significant reflection, the club can announce that Ange Postecoglou has been relieved of his duties. 'We are extremely grateful to Ange for his commitment and contribution during his two years at the club. Ange will always be remembered as only the third manager in our history to deliver a European trophy, alongside legendary figures Bill Nicholson and Keith Burkinshaw. 'However, the Board has unanimously concluded that it is in the best interests of the Club for a change to take place. Following a positive start in the 2023-24 Premier League (PL) season, we recorded 78 points from the last 66 PL games. This culminated in our worst ever PL finish last season. At times there were extenuating circumstances – injuries and then a decision to prioritise our European campaign. Whilst winning the Europa League this season ranks as one of the club's greatest moments, we cannot base our decision on emotions aligned to this triumph. 'It is crucial that we are able to compete on multiple fronts and believe a change of approach will give us the strongest chance for the coming season and beyond. This has been one of the toughest decisions we have had to make and is not a decision that we have taken lightly, nor one we have rushed to conclude. We have made what we believe is the right decision to give us the best chance of success going forward, not the easy decision.' Following Tottenham's announcement, Postecoglou released his own statement: 'When I reflect on my time as manager of Tottenham Hotspur, my overriding emotion is one of pride. 'The opportunity to lead one of England's historic football clubs and bring back the glory it deserves will live with me for a lifetime. Sharing that experience with all those who truly love this club and seeing the impact it had on them is something I will never forget. Loading 'That night in Bilbao was the culmination of two years of hard work, dedication and unwavering belief in a dream. There were many challenges to overcome and plenty of noise that comes with trying to accomplish what many said was not possible.' He added: 'I want to thank those who were with me every day for the last two years. A fantastic group of young men who are now legends of this football club and the brilliant coaches who never once doubted we could do something special.' Tottenham's Europa League success changed the minds of many supporters over Postecoglou's future. But a 17th place Premier League finish, alongside the Europa League win, ultimately cost him his job, even though his squad was decimated by injuries. Levy has put himself under huge pressure to appoint a successor to Postecoglou who can out-perform the Australian. Frank has never won a major trophy as a manager and has not managed in a full European competition. Silva won the Greek title with Olympiacos and coached them in the Champions League. Sacking Postecoglou will cost Tottenham in the region of £4 million ($8.33 million) in compensation. Italian giants pick Romanian rookie as new coach

Inter Milan have appointed Romanian Cristian Chivu as coach on a two-year deal in place of Simone Inzaghi, who left the role following the Italian side's 5-0 Champions League final loss to Paris St Germain. Chivu, who has long been groomed for the role, will be in charge in time for their Club World Cup campaign. Former Inter defender Chivu, who left Parma less than four months in charge, played as a defender for Inter for seven years from 2007 and was part of Jose Mourinho's treble-winning side in 2010. He later spent six years coaching their youth teams, from under-14s in 2018 to under-19s in 2024. "In February 2025, Cristian was given his first opportunity to coach a senior side as Parma... He led the Emilians to safety, with the team picking up 16 points from 13 matches under his guidance," Inter said in a statement. "Now, Cristian Chivu is beginning the third chapter of his Nerazzurri story. And he's doing so with the values that have always guided him: dedication, sacrifice and a tireless work ethic." Inter begin their Club World Cup campaign against Mexico's Monterrey on June 17 in Los Angeles. Inzaghi, who left the club last week after four years as coach, has joined Saudi Arabian side Al-Hilal.
