Mumbai rains: Yellow Alert! IMD issues thunderstorm, rainfall warnings till June 21; details
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Saturday issued a yellow alert warning for Mumbai, Thane, Raigad, and several other parts of Maharashtra, indicating the possibility of thunderstorms accompanied by lightning, moderate rainfall, and gusty winds.
The alert is in place until at least Wednesday.
According to the latest IMD bulletin, Mumbai will remain under a yellow alert on Sunday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, while neighbouring districts such as Thane and Raigad will stay under warning from Sunday through Wednesday. The alert extends beyond the Konkan region, with much of the rest of Maharashtra also placed under a yellow warning for the next four days, signaling the likelihood of unsettled weather across the state.
Speaking to ANI on Friday, IMD scientist Akhil Srivastava pointed out that southern India, especially the states of Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Karnataka, will experience persistent rainfall, accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds for the next five days.
Similar weather conditions are expected to prevail over Central India.
Earlier on Saturday, rain lashed several parts of Mumbai as the city has been experiencing pre-monsoon showers over the past few days.
In 2025, IMD said the southwest monsoon seasonal (June to September) rainfall over the country as a whole during 2025 is most likely to be above normal (greater than 104 per cent of the Long Period Average).
The advance of the southwest monsoon over the Indian mainland is marked by monsoon onset over Kerala. It is an important indicator characterising the transition from the hot and dry to the rainy season.
The yellow alert indicates the likelihood of unsettled weather across the state.
Persistent rainfall and thunderstorms are expected over the next five days.
The southwest monsoon typically sets in over Kerala on June 1, with a standard deviation of about 7 days.

After a promising early onset of the southwest monsoon on May 26, the city has entered a prolonged lull, leaving residents anticipating its full return. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), monsoon activity is expected to revive across the peninsular region starting June 13, bringing the first widespread rainfall since the initial showers. As of 9 am on Monday, June 10, Mumbai recorded a temperature of 29°C, humidity at 75%, precipitation at 5%, and winds at 14 kmph, with the IMD predicting a partly cloudy sky accompanied by one or two spells of rain or thundershowers. Temperatures are likely to range between a minimum of 27°C and a maximum of 33°C. In a report cited by the Hindustan Times, IMD scientist Sushma Nair explained that the monsoon naturally undergoes alternating active and dormant phases, and the Indian peninsular region is currently in one such inactive spell. However, she added that this period is expected to end by Thursday, with fresh rainfall likely to resume. 'A trough extending from North Tamil Nadu to the South Maharashtra coast across interior Karnataka will bring in the rains and is expected to intensify further in the coming days," said Nair. As per IMD's forecast, an orange alert has been issued for Sindhudurg, Kolhapur, and the Ghats of Kolhapur, warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall. Axiom-4 mission: All eyes on weather conditions as agencies target June 11 launch
Even as the launch of Indian astronaut Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla's mission to the International Space Station (ISS) has once again been postponed, agencies associated with launch activities are closely monitoring the weather conditions at Florida in the USA. The Axiom-4 mission (AX-4) to the ISS, which was scheduled on June 10 at 8.22 a.m. Eastern Time (ET) from Launch Complex 39A at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration's (NASA) Kennedy Space Center in Florida, was postponed to June 11 due to weather conditions. At the Ax-4 pre-launch press conference held on June 9 (June 10 in India), following the Launch Readiness Review (LRR), which evaluates the Falcon 9 and Dragon spacecraft, mission hardware, and readiness for launch, Jimmy Taeger, Launch Weather Officer, 45th Weather Squadron, U.S. Space Force spoke about the weather forecast over Florida. He said that there was surface high pressure to the south east of central Florida, and what it does is it typically produces south west flow across the area. 'Now over the next couple of days, the surface high pressure is going to move further towards the north and that is going to switch our primary flow towards the south east. South east flow does tend to create some more isolated scattered showers to thunder showers in the morning time,' he said. He added that even though the Probability of Violation (POV) was lower for the initial attempt (June 10), for the next attempt on Wednesday (June 11) the POV does increase to 20%. 'And as we get to Thursday (June 12), the backup opportunity POV increases a little bit more to about 25%. So though it is on the lower end, there does look like there could be a possibility of isolated scattered thunderstorms near the area at the launch time. But for the ascent corridor even though the winds are pretty strong right now, it does look like winds are going to be improving over the next couple of days. As we get to Wednesday, winds will be even better, and Thursday, even better than Wednesday,' he added. Mr. Taeger said that a close eye would be kept on possible showers and thunderstorms along the ascent corridor. When asked if there was a launch window for the AX-4 mission, Dana Weigel, manager, International Space Station Program, NASA said that there are launch opportunities till June 30. 'In terms of launch opportunities for the mission, we have launch opportunities all the way through June 30, and then the Russian heavy progress cargo vehicle will be undocking, and a new one will be coming up and docking at the ISS. So, we will have a brief cut-off for that, and a brief cut-off for high Solar Beta. Then we pick up again like in the middle of July. So, plenty of opportunities to fly the vehicle,' Ms. Weigel said.
