SMC chairman raises alarm over surge in dog bite cases in Sibu
SIBU (May 26): Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) chairman Clarence Ting has voiced deep concern over the alarming number of dog bite incidents in the district, which reached approximately 300 cases last month.
Quoting data from the Ministry of Health (KKM), Ting revealed that the majority of the dog bites were inflicted by pet dogs owned by individuals, not strays.
'According to KKM's data, there were 216 cases of dog bites involving pets owned by individuals, whereas stray dogs were responsible for 74 cases in April.
'I am deeply concerned with the high number of dog bites incidents here. These are recorded cases when victims sought treatments in hospital or clinics.
'What about those that did not seek treatment? So, the number of incidents may be higher,' Ting told reporters after SMC's full council meeting today.
He further pointed out that the statistics translate to an average of 10 people bitten by dogs every day.
'On average, about 10 persons got bitten by dogs every single day. This is unacceptable. This is a very big concern,' he cautioned.
In this regard, Ting urged the public to continue working with the council to reduce the number of dog bites.
'You should confine your pet dogs to your house compound. If you need to let it out, ensure your canine is on a leash.'
Additionally, he explained that in Sarawak, the enforcement of responsible dog ownership is governed mainly by local authority by-laws under the Local Authorities Ordinance 1996 and supported by public health regulations.

Its director, Dr Veronica Lugah, said the health ministry was committed to ensuring public healthcare services were delivered in a transparent, ethical and accountable manner. 'In line with established rules and procedures, all healthcare service personnel are prohibited from acting as middlemen for funeral arrangements. 'Any violation of these rules and procedures will be met with disciplinary action under the Public Officers Regulations Act (Conduct and Discipline) 1993,' she said in a statement. On Thursday, FMT reported a former doctor as alleging that a gang, acting as agents for funeral services, had long 'dominated' the mortuary of a public hospital in Sarawak. The former civil servant, who asked to be known as Johan, said gang members often showed up as soon as a death was reported at the emergency department or hospital wards, sometimes even before the death was officially confirmed. He claimed insiders were leaking information to gang members in exchange for payment. Veronica said the management of patients who die at government hospitals is entirely the responsibility of the next of kin. 'The hospital does not provide funeral management services, nor is it involved in selecting or appointing any party to handle such matters. 'This includes the transportation, preparation or handling of the body, which remains solely under the family's responsibility.' As such, she said any elements of coercion, threats or acts resembling gangsterism by parties claiming control over funeral arrangements should be reported to the police for a thorough investigation and for appropriate action to be taken.

M'sian finds nail in his ayam goreng in Wangsa Maju eatery

Worker killed after 17-storey storage rack collapses at glove factory in Kuala Langat
KUALA LANGAT: A worker was killed after being crushed by a 17-storey high storage rack at a glove factory on Jalan Kawasan Perindustrian Olak Lempit here on Tuesday. The Bangladeshi victim, identified as Rahman, 33, was pronounced dead at the scene after being extricated from the debris by rescue teams. Selangor Fire and Rescue Department Assistant Director of Operations, Ahmad Mukhlis Mokhtar, said they received an emergency call at 10.54 am, prompting a response from the KLIA Fire and Rescue Station with nine personnel and two fire engines. "Upon arrival at the location at 11.05am, it was found that six workers were trapped after the 17-storey storage rack collapsed and crushed them. "Five victims were rescued by members of the public before the arrival of the fire brigade, while one victim was still missing at that time," he said in a statement on Tuesday. He added that search and rescue operations continued until the last victim was found buried under the debris at 11.20am. "The victim was confirmed dead by the Ministry of Health Malaysia (KKM) team present at the scene. "All other victims sustained injuries and are receiving further medical treatment," he said. He noted that the case has been handed over to the police for further action.
