Ex-Lion says Owen Farrell selection 'doesn't make sense'

Extra.ie5 hours ago
Owen Farrell's inclusion in this summer Lions tour has sparked huge debate since it was announced that the former England International would join up with the squad to replace the injured Elliot Daly.
Farrell, 33, has been a part of three previous Lions tours dating back to 2013 and has had an illustrious career with Saracens, winning three Champions Cup, six Premiership titles and a Grand Slam as well as a World Cup final with England.
It's not outrageous to say that Farrell is one of the best English players of all time and has been one of the best British and Irish players in the last decade. However his major dip in form since 2023 and now inclusion in the Lions squad has caught the ire of many. Owen Farrell while on Lions tour in 2013 Pic:)
Farrell had by far the worst season of his career just gone as he had a disastrous spell in Paris with Racing 92. Now, the French Top 14 is one of the toughest leagues to play in the world, with any team able to beat anyone on their day and the season running on from early September to late June.
However Racing and Farrell had a particularly horrid time in 2024/25. Racing and their star-studded squad languished in the bottom half of the Top 14 table for much of the season and Owen Farrell missed out on most of it as he dealt with numerous injury issues.
Racing's decline would ultimately see coach Stuart Lancaster get dismissed in February, freeing him up to take the Head Coach gig at Connacht. Farrell would also cut his contract with Racing short and make a return to Saracens ahead of next season. Owen Farrell during his time at Racing 92 Pic:His inclusion has been the source to a lot of outrage online and it seems that a lot of people don't agree with Andy Farrell's decision to include his son, including an ex-Lion test starter Dan Biggar. Biggar spoke with Sky Sports about the decision and made his voice clear that he doesn't think it makes sense for Owen Farrell to be brought in as a replacement for utility back Elliot Daly.
'I mean it's big news and I'm struggling to get to grips with the sense of it. I mean no one is doubting the amazing character and amazing player with the career he has had but he hasn't played test rugby in over two years. He hasn't played any kind of competitive rugby in the last couple of months, eight or nine weeks and the person he's replacing he doesn't play any of the same positions.
'I'm just struggling to get to grips of where the sense of it is. Is Andy Farrell missing some leadership in amongst the team? Does he need some strong characters? Does he think that if it's a drawn series going into the final weekend he needs people who have been there and done it before?' Biggar also highlighted what effect this could have on the other fly-halves on tour. Scot Finn Russell is still expected to be a test starter barring injury but the likes of Marcus Smith and Fin Smith could feel that their spot is in jeopardy following Farrell's call-up.
'I have to say it smacks a little bit for me of a lot of risk in this play and not a huge amount of reward in terms of you have Marcus and Fin Smith in there, where do they feel they sit in the pecking order? Or when they go an close the bedroom door and turn their lights off at night what are they thinking? Are they thinking 'Oh he's coming in to replace me?'
'There's lots of options in those positions and it just feels like to me that it doesn't really make sense.'

'You win some, you lose some' - Jake White leaves Bulls by mutual agreement

JAKE WHITE, The Bulls' director of rugby, has left the South African club. The decision comes following an end of year review where it was 'mutually agreed' that White and the club would part ways immediately. White took up the job in 2020 and won back-to-back championships in Super Rugby Unlocked and the Carling Currie Cup that same season. Advertisement The 61-year-old's tenure also saw the Bulls reach three URC finals and achieve knockout appearances in both the Champions Cup and Challenge Cup. White said his decision was based on a desire for the team to find a 'new voice'. 'I have made the decision to move on,' he said. 'With many years' coaching experience, I felt it would be difficult to get the squad to perform to the next level. Therefore, in the best interest of both myself and the Bulls I feel it's time for a new chapter. It's time for this group to have a new voice. 'I have enjoyed my time in Pretoria. I met some wonderful friends. I believe that rugby is like life – you win some, you lose some. You learn as you grow. You need to be strong and courageous and, most importantly, it isn't always fair.' Leinster beat the Bulls convincingly last month in the URC final, 32-7, at Croke Park. The Bulls knocked Leinster out at the semi-final stage of the competition twice (2022 and 2024). There have been reports in South Africa of a rift between the former Springboks head coach and some of the Bulls senior players this year.

Australian Open champion Keys stunned at Wimbledon

AUSTRALIAN OPEN CHAMPION Madison Keys became the latest star to crash out of Wimbledon as the American sixth seed was stunned by Laura Siegemund on Friday. Keys slumped to a 6-3, 6-3 loss against the German world number 104 in the third round on Court Two. The 30-year-old is the fifth player among the top six seeds in the women's draw to suffer a surprise exit from this year's tournament. Coco Gauff, Jessica Pegula, Jasmine Paolini and Zheng Qinwen had already bowed out, though world number one Aryna Sabalenka is still alive. Advertisement Keys, who beat Sabalenka to clinch her maiden Grand Slam crown in Melbourne in January, is yet to make it past the quarter-finals in 11 visits to the All England Club. She made 31 unforced errors in a lacklustre display against Siegemund. It was a miserable way to spend the fourth of July for Keys while her compatriots celebrated the Independence Day holiday back in the United States. Siegemund, who beat former US Open finalist Leylah Fernandez in the second round, is through to the Wimbledon last 16 for the first time. At 37, she is the oldest player left in the women's tournament, with her best Grand Slam singles run coming when she made the French Open quarter-finals in 2020. Laura Siegemund celebrates. If you don't have nerves in this moment you are probably dead. 'It was a big opportunity. You just take a deep breath and remember your strategy. 'All the girls on the tour are perfectionists. I'm the same but there was no pressure for me. I don't feel like I need to prove anything anymore.' – © AFP 2025

Hurls out as the Lions prepare for stellar 'Tahs test

The British and Irish Lions' tour down under rumbles on this Saturday as they go down to Sydney to face the New South Wales Waratahs. Andy Farrell has yet again made numerous changes to his starting team, though there's no spot for his son Owen after he was called into the squad to replace the injured Elliot Daly. Tadhg Beirne is named as captain of the side in place of Maro Itoje to become the second Irish captain of this tour after Dan Sheehan's spell as skipper against the Western Force. There was definitely a Munster feel to the captains' run as Jack Conan popped up with a hurl and was caught hitting a few shots with Englishman Ben Earl. Jack Conan plays hurling after a British & Irish Lions captain's run Pic: Steve Christo/Sportsfile Wicklow man Jack Conan has spoken a few times about his love for GAA recently. In the run up to Leinster's URC final against the Bulls Conan spoke about his memories of Wicklow winning the Tommy Murphy Cup at Croke Park back in 2007. He would subsequently be the man that lifted the URC trophy at GAA HQ after Leinster were resounding winners against their South African rivals. Conan showed Ben Earls, who's starting in place of him this Saturday, a few tricks and got the England and Saracens star to hit a few sliotars across the pitch during the captain's run. Ben Earl during a British & Irish Lions captain's run Pic:Steve Christo/Sportsfile Earl will be joined by Josh van der Flier and Henry Pollock in the back row as Andy Farrell has named another six Irish players in this Saturday's starting team. Van der Flier will be joined by Finlay Bealham, Beirne, James Ryan, Mack Hansen and Hugo Keenan who is looking to finally make his Lions debut after he was a late withdrawal from Wednesday's game against the Reds due to illness. Keenan along with Scots Ben White and Blair Kinghorn are all set to make their Lions debut. Both Scots joined the camp late, White as a replacement for the injured Tomos Williams and Kinghorn made his way down under after playing a starring role as Toulouse won the Top 14 final after an extra-time win over Bordeaux-Begles. Dan Sheehan along with Tadhg Furlong are on the bench as Andy Farrell goes for a 6/2 split with White and Marcus Smith covering the backline on the bench. The Waratahs will offer a stern challenge to the Lions in the form of their star man, the 'Tongan Thor' Taniela Tupou. Tupou is one of the strongest players on the planet and when fit, is impossible to stop. He is joined by Wallaby winger Andrew Kellaway who has been released from the Wallabies squad to play in this match. A former Northampton Saint, Kellaway is a stellar winger who offers huge amount of pace. You can catch the game live on Sky Sports Main Event and Sky Sports Action at 11am on Saturday.
