Negaraku II Explores Malaysia's Story Through Art In George Town
GEORGE TOWN, Aug 17 (Bernama) -- As Malaysians proudly fly the Jalur Gemilang ahead of the National Day, the spirit of patriotism, unity and hope for the future is also finding its voice through art.
A year after unveiling negaraku, an exhibition honouring the nation's journey from independence to its future possibilites, art collector Bingley Sim and his wife Ima Norbinsha return with negaraku II, a more expansive sequel that goes deeper into the complexities of Malaysian identity.
Running throughout the month (until Aug 31) at Hin Bus Depot, Jalan Gurdwara here, negaraku II showcases compelling works from the private collection of Sim, 62, and Ima, 63, two passionate champions of socially conscious Malaysian contemporary art.
Curated by Ivan Gabriel, the exhibition features 35 works from the couple's private collection, with some presented as thematic sets, bringing the total number of individual pieces to about 60, divided into six chapters.
In an interview with Bernama, Sim explained that the first chapter titled 'Pejuang-Pejuang' (Warriors), begins with a 1511 masterpiece by Edroger Rosili depicting the Portuguese arrival, a reminder of a history Malaysians must not forget, as their ancestors lived under colonial rule for centuries.
He said the second chapter 'Malaysia, Truly Asia' takes inspiration from the well-known tourism slogan, highlighting the country's rich cultural diversity while also addressing the underlying challenges that coexist with its beauty.
'Third chapter 'Pendatang?' (Immigrants?) is quite core in this show because this is something very close to curator Ivan. It explores the migrant roots of many Malaysians, in fact, many of our parents or grandparents, in my case, were actually a migrant and became an immigrant from China,' he said.
In Chapter 4 titled 'Sama-sama' (Together), Sim pointed out that it celebrates Malaysia's food culture as a unifying bridge between communities, while highlighting historical connections beyond popular eateries.

Not to be outdone, members Shotaro (쇼타로), Sungchan (성찬) and Eunseok (은석), a.k.a the hyung line, then did a cover of DOLLA's hit song, 'MWA!'. The members executed both dance challenges perfectly, showcasing their impeccable dance skills. Fancams of the dance challenges made their way online, sparking excitement amongst local netizens who were in glee over the K-pop group dancing to Malaysian songs. DOLLA member Angel also shared her reaction to the news, expressing joy that RIIZE did the 'MWA!' dance challenge. The singer also thanked the group for the dance challenge, adding that she hoped DOLLA and RIIZE could someday meet up and dance together. Many iDOLLAs also expressed pride over the Malaysian girl group's global reach, with some saying they hope to see more international groups doing the 'MWA!' dance. While in KL, RIIZE also held a private fansigning where some lucky fans got to meet them up close. The group also uploaded a short vlog of their trip, revealing that they visited the PETRONAS Twin Towers and tried some local snacks, including Mamee Monsters and Super Ring, during their stay. Malaysian fans have commented on the video, saying they're happy that the group enjoyed their time in KL. The RIIZE members are already back in Seoul, preparing for their next tour stop. However, they promised to return to Malaysia in the future, so let's hope that day comes soon. #SHOWBIZ: Salamiah, Atilia shine in sold-out mother-daughter concert
KUALA LUMPUR: The Plenary Theatre at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre was recently filled with warmth, joy, and music as Malaysian songstress Atilia Haron shared the stage with her mother, legendary singer Salamiah Hassan, for their sold-out 'Gelombang Bahagiaku' concert. "Since I was little, I've dreamed of being like Mama. To finally share a stage with her in front of a full house... it still feels surreal," Atilia told the 470-strong audience between songs. "We started this project with no sponsors, but with the love and support of friends, family, and our incredible band, we made it happen. I will carry this night in my heart forever." Salamiah added, "Singing with my daughter for the entire concert... that's the greatest gift I could ever receive. I'm so happy and grateful. I hope we can do this again and again." The mother-daughter duo, along with guest artistes MonoloQue, Hardy Arbi, Mimifly, and Elvira Arul, performed close to 30 songs, including their latest single 'Age Is Just A Number'. Among those enjoying the two-hour show were prolific lyricist Datuk Habsah Hassan and renowned producer Roslan Aziz. The concert was presented by Mujik Wand Production, led by Salamiah's son, Raja Ahmad Shah Raja Haron.

Popular animated series such as Upin & Ipin, Ejen Ali, BoBoiBoy and Mechamato are now recognised in hundreds of countries, serving as a medium of cultural diplomacy that showcases Malaysia's identity, values and way of life to global audiences. Les' Copaque Production Sdn Bhd founder and managing director Burhanuddin Md Radzi said that from the very beginning, he envisioned Upin & Ipin as a platform to portray the harmony of Malaysian society. "Our guiding principle in every production is to promote national culture, highlight noble values, and impart lessons that audiences can embrace. At the same time, we incorporate Islamic values subtly, without branding the series as an Islamic product. "We really bring 'Malaysia' into Upin & Ipin because our everyday lives are unique - we live harmoniously in a multiracial society,' he told Bernama recently. Burhanuddin said the depiction of village life and multicultural harmony in the series has captivated foreign audiences, who find the portrayal of Malaysian society fascinating. The Ejen Ali animated series has recorded more than 13 billion views on YouTube, underscoring its global reach. "We are aware of how big a responsibility this is, which is why we are very careful when developing the storyline so that it does not offend any party. What we are trying to highlight is our culture, universal human values and the spirit of patriotism that can be accepted by all viewers. "This is the form of cultural diplomacy that we want to bring using animation as a bridge to introduce Malaysia positively," he said Meanwhile, WAU Animation CEO and Director of Ejen Ali The Movie 2, Muhammad Usamah Zaid Yasin, said his team remains committed to producing stories that are both meaningful and relatable to Malaysians. "Animation is not just about entertainment. It must deliver a message that leaves an impact while reflecting who we are as Malaysians,' he said. He explained that Malaysian cultural elements are naturally embedded into the settings, locations and atmosphere of the storytelling, while the core conflicts are based on universal themes that are easily understood by international audiences. Muhammad Usamah Zaid said Ejen Ali has received an overwhelming response abroad, successfully penetrating markets such as Indonesia and India, and even being showcased at the World Expo in Osaka, Japan.
