Guernsey tourism businesses see 'great' start to summer season

BBC News29-04-2025

Guernsey tourism businesses say they have had a "great" start to the season, with many seeing an increase in visitors from France. There was a 47% increase in visitors in April compared to 2024, according to Deputy Neil Inder, president of the Economic Development Committee.Tour guide Korinne Le Page said this is the first time she has seen her calendar look so busy.Andy Furnace, owner of the Petit Train, said he has also seen a "positive" start to his season.
'Very good'
Last month Brittany Ferries started its new timetables for its Guernsey-only service.Ms Le Page believes the better day-trip offering for French visitors has helped boost numbers."[Brittany Ferries] marketing has been very good and Visit Guernsey have been marketing as well, there's been a lot of work with Normandy and Brittany tour operators and I'm seeing more and more people making inquiries", she said.Inder said the island was feeling "busier" than in previous years, and this was backed up by the numbers. He said: "We've had 13,000 passenger movements over the Easter period and up to the end of October we are looking at about 63% up on last year."The experience of Guernsey tourism businesses is in contrast to their counterparts in Jersey, who said they have had the "worst start to a tourist season ever."Ferry company DFDS said it had 6,000 people travel to Jersey with them over Easter.Inder said Guernsey "rightly" split from Jersey during the joint tender process for the new lifeline ferry contracts. "We are entirely committed to Brittany Ferries, Guernsey is much loved in Brittany and St Malo and the French like loyalty", he said.
Anda Jones, manager of Cadeaux gift shop, said she has also seen an uptick in French customers, who have also helped her learn the language. She said: "They also learn a bit of the patois, like A La Perchoine. Because I don't know French I asked some of the visitors to write a sign."I asked them 'how do you say welcome to our little shop' and they wrote it in French for me, so now I have a little sign outside."Mr Furnace, the Petit Train owner, said he's feeling positive for the season ahead."We're looking forward to it, as long as the weather holds. We are looking forward to Liberation Day and we're optimistic, especially for the French trade coming over. That's expected to be high around August time."

Eberechi Eze ‘trusting it will work out' over Crystal Palace's European hopes

Palace qualified for Europe for the first time in their history by winning the FA Cup last month, but their place is under threat because of UEFA rules surround multi-club ownership. John Textor holds a 43 per cent stake in Palace through his company Eagle Football and he is also the owner of French club Lyon, who qualified for the Europa League with a sixth-placed finish in Ligue 1. A decision is expected soon and Eze, who is with England for their World Cup qualifier against Andorra and friendly with Senegal, is optimistic. 'I really hope that Palace do get the reward because of what it took to actually achieve that,' Eze told reporters. 'It would be a huge shame if that was not the case but I'm trusting that it will work out in the end. 'It should work itself out because there's players who have worked to be in this position. 'There are fans who have been with the team throughout the whole season and experienced everything.' Meanwhile, Trevoh Chalobah is backing Thomas Tuchel to bring a 'winning culture' to England. A week to remember for @TrevohChalobah ❤️ — England (@England) June 3, 2025 The 25-year-old defender has received his maiden call-up for Tuchel's squad, which is another slice of recognition by the German. Chalobah said: 'He's the one who gave me my Chelsea debut. 'It's been good moments shared with him. He's a very tough manager. And I think that's what us players need going into the World Cup next year, and obviously in these games, just to build us up. 'He's a very good coach. He wants to win. He's a winner, you know? And he's seen that Chelsea, he's won, and he wants to bring that same winning culture here.'

EU could approve Mercosur deal by summer, agriculture chief says

BRUSSELS, June 5 (Reuters) - The European Union could approve its planned trade deal with South American bloc Mercosur before summer, but it has not yet fixed a date to do so, EU agriculture commissioner Christophe Hansen told Reuters on Thursday. "It could be before summer," Hansen said in an interview. EU nations still need to approve the deal, which was finalised in December but has faced opposition from members including France, which argues that the pact would hurt European farmers who face stricter norms and regulations than their South American peers. French President Emmanuel Macron and Brazil's President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva discussed their differences on the pact at a meeting in Paris on Thursday. Macron said the text could be improved with the insertion of mirror clauses. France has previously argued for the insertion of an emergency break clause to restrict imports if a sudden surge in imports destabilises certain EU markets. "This would indeed require that we go back to the table and reopen. I don't think that this would be helpful in this situation," Hansen said of the idea of resuming negotiations with Mercosur countries to add new safeguards to the deal. "I see from many different parts of the agriculture and food sector, they are really looking for having these new opportunities," he added.

Family shocked at rental costs in Guernsey

A man who left Guernsey said he was shocked to find the cost of rental accommodation had doubled when he returned 10 months Pinsard and his family moved to Australia in 2022 but after his wife was hurt in a car accident they decided to come back in June they had arranged a rental house for their first day back, Mr Pinsard said the property was in such poor condition they could not live in it - but they could not then find an affordable alternative.A report recently published by the Guernsey Community Foundation found young families were being "driven away" by rising living costs. Mr Pinsard said when the family had left Guernsey in 2022 they had been paying £1,300 per month for a two-bedroom house near the beach on the west said that in September 2023 they rented a "cramped" two-bedroom in St Sampsons that cost £2,600 per Pinsard added that he had found it "shocking that in such a short period of time, nine to 10 months, rental cost actually doubled".The government's Property Prices Bulletin showed the average local market rental price was £2,068 a month in the first quarter of figure is 1.5% higher than the previous quarter, 8.2% higher than the first quarter of 2024 and 51.7% higher than five years ago. 'Lots of sacrifices' Mr Pinsard said the family had been forced to live in temporary accommodation which had drained their savings."We got to the point where it was either we have to buy to get on to the property market or leave the island again," he Pinsards managed to buy a house, which needed renovation, thanks to "lots of sacrifices".Mr Pinsard said his wife worked extra shifts at the hospital and he had a side business he ran at the weekends to ensure they had a home."It is possible but only through many, many extra hours which takes time away from the children and family," he added.
