Guernsey tourism businesses see 'great' start to summer season

Last month Brittany Ferries started its new timetables for its Guernsey-only service.Ms Le Page believes the better day-trip offering for French visitors has helped boost numbers."[Brittany Ferries] marketing has been very good and Visit Guernsey have been marketing as well, there's been a lot of work with Normandy and Brittany tour operators and I'm seeing more and more people making inquiries", she said.Inder said the island was feeling "busier" than in previous years, and this was backed up by the numbers.He said: "We've had 13,000 passenger movements over the Easter period and up to the end of October we are looking at about 63% up on last year."The experience of Guernsey tourism businesses is in contrast to their counterparts in Jersey, who said they have had the "worst start to a tourist season ever."Ferry company DFDS said it had 6,000 people travel to Jersey with them over Easter.Inder said Guernsey "rightly" split from Jersey during the joint tender process for the new lifeline ferry contracts. "We are entirely committed to Brittany Ferries, Guernsey is much loved in Brittany and St Malo and the French like loyalty", he said.
Anda Jones, manager of Cadeaux gift shop, said she has also seen an uptick in French customers, who have also helped her learn the language.She said: "They also learn a bit of the patois, like A La Perchoine. Because I don't know French I asked some of the visitors to write a sign."I asked them 'how do you say welcome to our little shop' and they wrote it in French for me, so now I have a little sign outside."Mr Furnace, the Petit Train owner, said he's feeling positive for the season ahead."We're looking forward to it, as long as the weather holds. We are looking forward to Liberation Day and we're optimistic, especially for the French trade coming over. That's expected to be high around August time."

Shoppers can buy party banners for 10p, plus Union Jack handheld flags and a mock Valentine's Day engagement ring for 25p. Savvy savers can also get a 12-pack of plastic tumblers for 50p, a bridesmaid paper sash for 80p and a kids bonnet for 75p. A number of Christmas, Halloween and Easter items feature in the giant clearance sale as well. Shoppers will find Easter Bunny party glasses for 50p, while packs of Christmas plastic baubles are just 35p. The clearance stock is only available online with delivery charges starting from £3.95. Spends over £50 qualify for free delivery. Of course, make sure you compare prices before buying any of the products as you might find something similar cheaper elsewhere. Websites like Trolley, Price Spy and Price Runner are three worth visiting to check prices across the major retailers. POUNDLAND PLOTS MASS CLOSURES The giant sale comes as Poundland gears up to close 68 shops, as well as wind down its online operation. The discounter was bought for a nominal £1 fee in June by US investment firm Gordon Brothers. Five ways to save money at Poundland As part of the deal that was struck with Pepco, which owns Poundland, Gordon Brothers is plotting a major restructuring of the business. It has also pumped £80million of financing into the retailer. This is what was proposed in June: Closing 68 stores and negotiating rent reductions at a number of other locations Getting rid of frozen food products at all stores where they're currently sold Reducing the number of chilled food items sold Closing its frozen and digital distribution centre in Darton, South Yorkshire, later this year Closing its national distribution centre in Bilston, West Midlands, in early 2026 No longer selling products on its website Providing more womenswear and seasonal ranges The majority of these plans going ahead are subject to approval by the High Court. However, 40 of the 68 stores have already been confirmed as closing, with plans to shut them brought forward of any High Court decision. The 68 branches are all earmarked for closure by mid-October, with three already having shut. Meanwhile, 37 will close in August - 10 on August 10, 15 on August 17 and 12 on August 24. That means a further 28 will shut. It had reported weak Poundland sales over the previous six months and cut the brand's trading guidance for the year as a result. Poundland revenues dropped by 6.5% to £830million for the six months to March compared with a year earlier. The brand suffered "challenges across all categories" and had 18 net store closures over the period. Pepco had blamed "highly challenging trading conditions" for the fall in sales. There are currently 800 Poundland stores in operation across the UK, with plans to bring this down to 650 to 700. Shoppers thrilled as Marks & Spencer confirm return of 'popular feature'
After having been the victim of a cyber attack, Marks and Spencer were forced to suspend some membership perks for customers, but shoppers are excited to learn one popular perk is now back Celebrating your birthday isn't just about getting presents and cards from family and friends. Signing up to loyalty schemes and newsletters can give you access to a variety of freebies, deals and discounts from retailers to mark the big day. In order to help celebrate their customers, a lot of brands and stores offer people a birthday gift during their birthdays. This can range from a free sweet treat, to makeup, skincare or exclusive discounts. One of the many companies that used to offer their customers birthday treats is Marks and Spencer. However, this perk was stopped after the company was the victim of a cyber security attack. However, one excited shopper named Jo, known online as This Mum Cooks, recently took to TikTok to help spread the message that the supermarket chain is offering their customers the treat once more. "Marks and Spencer relaunched the free birthday gift," she excitedly revealed. She went on to explain that several membership perks, including the free birthday gift, were stopped following the shopping chain's cyber attack that happened during Easter weekend in April. The attack involved ransomware and impacted online ordering, click-and-collect and contactless payments. A Marks & Spencer online letter revealed that the compromised data comprises customer names, birth dates, residential and email addresses, phone numbers, household details and online purchase histories. In order to protect themselves and its members, several services were quickly stopped. However, while the cyber attack isn't completely resolved yet, the shopping giant has brought back some of the most missed services and perks after having restored some of its systems. This includes the popular birthday gift perk, where members get a free gift on their birthdays every year. "But what if your birthday was between the cyber attack and now?" Jo said. "Don't worry, Marks and Spencer are giving free birthday gifts to everybody in May, June and July. So if you birthday falls in one of those months, go and check your Marks and Spencer Sparks app." In a press release from 17 July, Marks and Spencer revealed that their Sparks loyalty scheme is now fully back online and will feature a range of "thank you" treats and rewards. It read: "Customers will be surprised with a range of rewards across Fashion & Home appearing in their Sparks hub. Plus, M&S ' popular Coffee Stamp scheme will soon be reinstated across M&S Café's across the UK – giving customers who have collected their six stamps a free coffee in their Sparks Hub to redeem during their next visit. "In addition, M&S will be giving out over 1.8 million birthday treats to those celebrating their birthday this month, as well as a belated birthday treat for customers who had celebrations in May or June." How to get a free birthday gift from Marks and Spencer But what if your birthday gift perk isn't in the app? There are a few things you can do. The first thing that Jo recommends is to refresh the app and make sure you have the most up to date version. Secondly, she urged people to make sure that they've entered their birthdays into the app. "Because, if your date of birth isn't there, then they don't know when to give you your birthday gift," she said. To do this, she explained: "So go into your account, into your personal details, and in there, you should have a section where you put your date of birth. "If all of those things are correct, and you are set up to receive communications from Marks and Spencer, you should be getting a free birthday gift. Anything from Percy Pigs all the way to a bottle of champagne. "So if your birthday has been recent, go take a look and let me know what you get."

ScotRail: Hundreds stranded in East Lothian last night after incident
All passengers on the packed 10.20pm [[North Berwick]] to Edinburgh Scotrail service, many of whom had been at the Fringe by the Sea festival, had to get off the train at about 10.40pm at [[Prestonpans]]. [[Edinburgh]]-bound passenger Gordon Craig told the East Lothian Courier: "We were close to Longniddry when there was an announcement over the tannoy that, due to a fatality on the line, the train would be stopping at [[Prestonpans]] and going no further. "The train was full of people and families and there were so many people standing about at Prestonpans, trying to get taxis, and it was all getting very heated. "Myself and my young son managed to get a relative to pick us up in his car - and we gave others a lift, including a guy with his dog! - but there were so many others who didn't know how they'd get home." At 10.58pm last night, ScotRail posted on X, formerly Twitter, that they were "working closely" with the emergency services who were "dealing with an incident" between [[Edinburgh]] and [[Prestonpans]]. "This means the [train] lines are currently closed between Edinburgh and North Berwick and Edinburgh and Tweedbank," they said. ScotRail confirmed that replacement buses "had been requested". However, at 11.26pm, ScotRail had bad news for the passengers. They posted: "We've been unable to secure replacement buses for the North Berwick/Tweedbank lines so customers are advised to make their own travel arrangements. Retain your train tickets and travel receipts for any claims." ScotRail posted this message on social media just before 11pm last night (Image: X) Meanwhile, at North Berwick railway station, the platform was packed with people wanting to travel on the midnight train to Edinburgh - a special extra service for the hundreds who had attended the Fringe by the Sea festival, which featured a headline slot last night by celebrated French music duo Air. But due to the emergency incident, the train - like all trains on the line in both directions - was cancelled and revellers had to try to make their own arrangements to get home, despite it being after midnight, and with £80-£100 taxis to Edinburgh almost impossible to secure. Some even retreated to the nearby Nether Abbey Hotel to enquire about rooms. On the social media platform X, desperate pleas were being made to ScotRail by people stuck at both Prestonpans and North Berwick and unable to get home. Lynne Rendall posted at 11.52pm: "Literally hundreds of us stranded at North Berwick. Please can you sort replacement buses?" Due to the "late hour", ScotRail said they could not. And she added: "[It's] impossible to make alternative arrangements as no taxi from West Lothian will come out for us and all accommodation is fully booked." And another poster, Wanderluster, told ScotRail: "There are hundreds of people stranded! This is totally unacceptable! Sort something out!" Wanderluster added: "There are elderly people and families. There are no taxis in North Berwick. What are hundreds of people supposed to do?" While Kate Bremner wrote: "There are hundreds of people stuck! You have a duty of care!" East Lothian residents who had spent an evening in the Capital were also unable to get home to the county by train late last night. They could, however, use their train ticket on the Lothian 26 bus service between [[Edinburgh]], Musselburgh and [[Prestonpans]]. The British Transport Police has been asked to confirm the nature of the incident on the line. Rail services on the route returned to normal this morning.
