Top-flight water polo returns to Nelson Mandela Bay

The Herald18-07-2025
Top-flight water polo is set for a resurgence in SA with the kickoff of a new national franchise tournament that is set to bring more than 150 players, coaches, referees and support staff to Nelson Mandela Bay in August.
Sponsored by leading automation manufacturer Jendamark, the inaugural event of the SA Water Polo Winter Series will see 112 of the country's elite senior players drafted into four men's and four women's squads that are set to churn up the water of the Newton Park Indoor Pool from August 8 to 10.
The new Winter Series is similar in concept to the SA20 cricketing format, introducing a franchise system to help level the playing field and offer an alternative to the regional dominance of Western Province and Gauteng teams in interprovincial competition.
It also marks the first national tournament run under the auspices of the newly formed SA Water Polo, which has successfully challenged Swimming SA in court for the rights to promote the interests of this growing sport.
Tournament director Siegfried Lokotsch, who is also the title sponsor's director of operations, said adding a new franchise event to the national calendar would reinvigorate senior competition and extend the season beyond the traditional autumn finish.
'This franchise format creates a fresh dynamic that's both exciting to watch and allows players to compete strength for strength.
'Our sport is not going to get stronger if only the top provinces are getting stronger.'
With the game gaining traction at top schools countrywide, Lokotsch said it was important to reignite competitive senior water polo, while also promoting grassroots development.
'For SA Water Polo, it's really about the broader development of the game and being more inclusive. We want to create opportunities that give young athletes from all backgrounds something to strive for.'
Lokotsch said year-round development would be at the heart of SA Water Polo's efforts, with the Nelson Mandela Bay region creating the blueprint of what this could look like.
With the help of volunteers such as Claudia Charles, a former water polo player whose eldest daughter, Jenna, now represents Eastern Province, the Learn to Polo development programme is introducing children in the northern areas and township schools to swimming and, ultimately, water polo.
'I'm so grateful to them for seeing the need to develop,' Charles said.
'Water polo has a rich history in the northern areas, and the Gelvandale pool played a big role in getting kids into the sport when I was at school. But with lack of infrastructure and systems support, it fell away.
'It's a great privilege to be part of this, especially with that pool reopening again, it's a light of hope, and I'm so grateful to Siegfried and his team for putting in some serious support and investing in these children.'
The after-school programme, which is already under way, started with an assessment of the children's swimming abilities, followed by twice-weekly training sessions with a qualified swimming coach to develop fitness and strength before introducing them to the basics of water polo.
Chapman High teacher Shari Kemp said the Gelvandale school was happy to have been included in the programme.
'It means a lot to the learners. They don't always have the opportunities or the resources.'
'
Transport to and from the heated Newton Park Indoor Pool is covered by SA Water Polo's regional structure, with further plans to introduce a summer programme, led by a professional coach, at the Gelvandale pool.
'The idea is to identify and nurture emerging talent throughout the programme, and possibly get them into water polo-playing schools,' Lokotsch said.
'There is so much rugby talent coming from under-resourced schools, and this is where we are missing a trick.
'I believe rugby players make the best water polo players, and vice versa. Some of our Springbok stars, like Malcolm Marx, were also great at polo.
'We're best in the world at rugby; we could also be best in the world in the water.'
A development clinic for players, coaches and referees will be an anchor element of the Winter Series schedule and proceeds from the weekend tournament will be used to fund the schools programme. — Jendamark

Soweto Marathon shifts to late November under new organisation

The 30th edition of the Soweto Marathon is shifting to late November, a spokesperson for the event said on Thursday, contradicting claims by Soweto Marathon Trust (SMT) representatives that the country's biggest one-day road race had been cancelled. Jabu Mbuli said nine of 11 Soweto running clubs had agreed to administer the race through an NPO. This came after allegations against the previous two bodies that staged the race — the SMT and then a private company that stepped in to organise the past two races in 2023 and 2024. 'We believe this [NPO] option will assist in ensuring good and proper governance and sound financial accountability,' Mbuli said. 'The appointed non-executive board of directors will comprise largely of qualified professionals and will include chartered accountants and attorneys. The athletics clubs of Soweto own this race and they will focus on the race organising committee to run this race by the people, for the people.' SMT representatives recently claimed there would be no race this year, but Mbuli said the 2025 race would be launched this month and would take place at the end of November.

Back in Proteas, Brevis savours dream of playing Australia after silencing the noise

Last summer saw a new Brevis, seemingly relaxed and comfortable in his own skin, enjoying a number of stunning innings for the Titans, MI Cape Town and the Chennai Super Kings, who signed him as a late replacement. The flow of runs ensured his return to the Proteas and he made his Test debut in Zimbabwe in June, lashing a 41-ball half-century, then playing in the T20 tri-series with New Zealand. On the eve of his departure with the Proteas to Australia for six white-ball internationals, the 22-year-old said his slump occurred when he started to listen to too many advisers. 'The biggest change over the past year has been that I now know who I trust with my game and I've gone back to being the original Dewald Brevis,' he said. 'I was blessed with a talent and my natural self is who I want to be. That went away a bit because I tried to be too clever and I listened to so many different people. My only focus now is playing with a smile. 'It's very special to be back in the Proteas squad. When you first play, that environment is so amazing, but then when you go out of it, it feels like you've been removed from the inner circle and it's very tough.

From rapping to racing, Early B heads to Aldo Scribante

Home-grown rapping sensation Earl Swartz, or Early B to his thousands of fans, will be in action at Aldo Scribante Raceway for the first time this weekend when the Algoa Motorsport Club host the fifth round of their regional and club championship. Swartz, now enjoying his second season of circuit racing, will be behind the wheel of a Liqui Moly-backed Forza Super Vee single seater. 'This will be my first time racing on the full track at Scribante, so I'm super excited. I have done some drag racing here before, so at least I know my way down the main straight,' he said. 'I feel way more comfortable in the car now as we have sorted out all of the little gremlins on the car, which has resulted in me qualifying in the top three at the last three race meetings, with a fourth place being my best finish so far. 'Maybe the PE wind will give me the extra edge to get me onto my first podium finish. 'Though the goal would be to get a good result, my main objective is just to finish all three races and have fun on the track, as I am a huge car lover. 'I would like to thank Liqui Moly for making it possible for me to race and would also like to wish all of the racers across all of the classes the very best of luck for the weekend.' This weekend's race day has been dubbed The Tiny Marriner Memorial Race Day in memory of local motorcycle legend Tiny Marriner, who recently passed away at the age of 86. Marriner's racing journey started in 1957, and his talents took him across the globe to many of the famous racetracks, including the Isle of Man TT, where he proudly represented SA, earning respect from riders from all parts of the world. Always a fierce competitor, he remained a true gentleman who inspired generations of racers with his humility, passion, knowledge and his relentless passion for speed and excellence. Motorsport lovers are in for a treat as the Super Vee single-seaters are a National Challenge class and adding to the bumper-filled programme is the VW Rookie Cup Inter-Provincial Challenge Series that will also be in action, with local star Joshua Moore now just one point off the lead in the championship after three rounds. Local classes that will be in action are the EP Modified Saloons that will have 27 cars lining up at the start, the Wide Horizon Coastal Challenge for Historic, Classic and Retro Cars, Street & Fine Cars, as well as open motorcycles. The race day will end in the evening with the regular Bronscor Ingco-sponsored 45-minute Endurance Race. Qualifying for all classes will get under way at 8am on Saturday, with racing scheduled to start at 10am. Tickets to the event are available at the gate at a cost of R70 for adults. Upcoming events: August 15: Volvo Display at the EP Veteran Car Club in Conyngham Road August 16: Inner City Enduro, Baakens Valley August 22-23: Regional Extreme Festival, East London Grand Prix Circuit August 23: Dirt Oval racing at PEOTR, Club Championship round 7 August 30: Alles-op-Wiele Motor Show at Daniel Pienaar Technical High School September 6: Algoa Motorsport Club, round 6 at Aldo Scribante Raceway. September 28: Distinguished Gentleman's Drive at EPVCC. The Herald
