Florian Wirtz facing several weeks out due to ankle injury
Florian Wirtz will be absent from the Bayer Leverkusen team for several weeks following an ankle injury sustained against Werder Bremen last weekend, the club has confirmed.
As reported by GGFN last weekend, Wirtz was seen leaving the stadium on crutches, and he headed to the hospital for an MRI scan.
The fear was that Wirtz had sustained a potential syndesmosis tear, which would have ruled him out for the rest of the season.
However, the injury isn't as bad as first feared, but the attacking midfielder will be absent for several weeks, including the home leg of Bayer Leverkusen's Last 16 Champions League tie against Bayern Munich.
Sporting director Simon Rolfes explained: 'Florian's absence naturally affects us at this stage of the season, but we will make up for it with a strong team. We know Florian and know that he will be back as soon as possible. Everyone will support him. We assume that he will be fit again for the final stretch of the season.'
Depending on how Wirtz gets on with his rehabilitation, he could also miss the club's DFB Pokal semi-final against Arminia Bielefeld on April 1st.

Milan show interest in Bayer Leverkusen's Granit Xhaka
After causing a stir suggesting that a return to Basel was imminent, Granit Xhaka has since stated that he's happy at Bayer Leverkusen, where he has three-years remaining on his current contract. However, that hasn't stopped clubs showing an interest in the Swiss midfielder. According to Kicker, Milan have shown 'loose interest' as they prepare for a new era under Massimiliano Allegri as their new head coach and Igli Tare as sporting director. Speaking earlier in the week, Bayer Leverkusen sporting director Simon Rolfes confirmed that the club are planning to go into the 2025/26 season with Xhaka, as they too embark on a new era after Erik ten Hag replaced Xabi Alonso as head coach. Advertisement But the fact that Leverkusen retain interest in Malick Thiaw could work in Milan's favour. Last season's second-placed Bundesliga side are scouring the market for a Jonathan Tah replacement and have identified the Milan defender as a candidate. Whether or not Xhaka could be used in a makeshift is, as of now, unfounded. GGFN | Daniel Pinder

How Schalke can benefit from Bayer Leverkusen's pursuit of Malick Thiaw
With Jonathan Tah swapping Bayer Leverkusen for Bayern Munich, Simon Rolfes is working on defensive solutions with die Werkself eyeing Milan's Malick Thiaw. Bayer were priced out of a move for the German last summer, but Milan are now open to offers. Kim Falkenberg, Director of Professional Football at Leverkusen, was in Rotterdam to watch Thiaw against Feyenoord. And now the 23-year-old is a hot topic at the club. WAZ report that €25m is a fee that has been mentioned, and 2. Bundesliga side Schalke could benefit. Should Thiaw leave Milan before 2027, when his contract expires, then S04 could be in for a payday. They will receive 10 percent of any future transfer fee, meaning they could pocket around €2.5m. Advertisement After being an indispensable player for Milan in the early stages of last season, Thiaw found himself on the bench for seven of Milan's final nine Serie A games of the season. A departure from the Lombardy club is conceivable and Thiaw would be open to returning to Germany. GGFN | Daniel Pinder

(Photo by) 'He wants his team to be protagonists with the ball and to dominate the game, and Madrid has been characterised by a very vertical game in recent years. 'Xabi won't want to lose that virtue, which he also enjoyed as a player, but he will try to instil in the players to have more control of the ball.' Garcia added that the early weeks will be crucial. 'The first few weeks at Madrid will be very important, and he knows how to be very precise in his instructions so that the players know what he wants from them.' Advertisement Lastly, on whether the Real Madrid forwards will be convinced to press more under Alonso, Garcia said with confidence, 'He knows they have to. To win, everyone must contribute. I've spoken with him recently, and he's already thinking about how the attackers will help in defence. 'He won't ask them to press 50 times, but he will expect enough effort to win the ball back and create chances,' he concluded.
