Iga Swiatek's overnight turnaround from Cincinnati to New York
Around 8 a.m. Tuesday, she was getting ready for her mixed doubles match at the U.S. Open in New York City.
It's been a quick turnaround.
'This was the most extreme situation and most extreme schedule I've had after a title win,' Swiatek, currently ranked second in the world, said Tuesday afternoon. 'An hour and a half after the match, we already went to catch a plane.'
But that didn't slow her down. Swiatek and Casper Ruud, her mixed doubles partner, won both of their Tuesday matches to secure a spot in Wednesday's mixed doubles quarterfinal, where they'll be competing for a spot in the $1 million title game.
'Actually, it's kind of nice to have another task, and to not let yourself be lazy but really focus on the next exciting thing,' she said about the quick turnaround.
Ruud didn't always feel quite so calm about it. He was dining in New York while Swiatek played her title match in Ohio and keeping a close eye on the score. He was secretly chatting with Swiatek's team throughout the match — 'she doesn't know this,' Ruud said with a laugh — and wondering about their doubles match the next morning.
'I can't lie. I was a little concerned,' he said about watching Swiatek continue to progress through the Cincinnati Open's rounds. He exited the tournament in the first round.
'(But) she was here doing her warmup at 10 a.m. … I look at Iga and I'm like, 'This is determination, like I've never seen it before.''
The quick turnaround from Cincinnati is new for singles players at the U.S. Open. With this year's reimagined mixed doubles draw, which includes top singles players for the first time, the week that was usually recovery time is now playing time.

Carlos Alcaraz, the men's champion in Cincinnati, faced a similar turnaround to his afternoon doubles match with Emma Raducanu. He did have a few more hours on each end, given the scheduling of both tournaments.
Alcaraz was knocked out of mixed doubles Tuesday afternoon, but Swiatek and Ruud will be back in action Wednesday.
'Iga will have a good sleep tonight,' said Ruud. 'She deserves that.'

BALTIMORE (AP) — Orioles closer Félix Bautista has had another major operation, this time to repair a torn rotator cuff and torn labrum. The team says Bautista had surgery Tuesday with Dr. Neal ElAttrache in Los Angeles. The development comes just over a week after interim manager Tony Mansolino announced the 6-foot-8 right-hander would miss the rest of the season because of a 'significant' shoulder injury. Bautista is likely to miss most of next season too, part of a string of health issues that have limited him since he made the All-Star team in 2023. Bautista was one of the most imposing relievers in baseball that year, posting 33 saves and a 1.48 ERA. But he missed the last month of that season, plus the playoffs, because of a right UCL injury. After Tommy John surgery, he was out for all of 2024. Bautista was able to make it back this year, going 1-1 with a 2.60 ERA and 19 saves, but after 34 2/3 innings, he'll miss significant time again. The Orioles were off Wednesday. They begin a four-game home series Thursday night against Houston. Avalanche add depth at forward by signing Victor Olofsson to a 1-year deal
DENVER (AP) — The Colorado Avalanche added depth at forward Wednesday by signing Victor Olofsson to a one-year deal. The 30-year-old Olofsson spent last season with the Vegas Golden Knights, where he had 15 goals and 14 assists over 56 games. He turned in the longest road point streak in Golden Knights history when he notched at least a point in 10 straight games from Dec. 4 to Jan. 23. Olofsson got his first taste of the Stanley Cup playoffs last season, scoring two goals as the team reached the second round. A seventh-round pick by Buffalo in 2014, Olofsson has 105 goals and 106 assists in 370 games with the Sabres and Golden Knights. He reached two milestones last season — recording his 100th career assist on Jan. 17 and notching his 100th career goal the next night. The 5-fot-11, 180-pound Olofsson was on the 2019-20 all-rookie team. Before arriving in North America, Olofsson played in the Swedish Hockey League for parts of the 2013-18 seasons. Kei Nishikori will miss the US Open because of a back injury
NEW YORK (AP) — Kei Nishikori withdrew from the U.S. Open on Wednesday, saying a back injury has not fully healed. Nishikori was injured in May and pulled out of the French Open. The 2014 U.S. Open runner-up from Japan returned earlier this month for a first-round loss in Cincinnati but said his back isn't healthy enough to play in New York. 'Hi fans, unfortunately I will not be ready for the U.S. Open yet. I had an MRI taken of my back and it's not 100% healed yet,' Nishikori wrote in a social media post. 'Working hard to be back on court soon. Thanks for the support.' Nishikori was ranked No. 4 in 2015, the highest by an Asian men's player but has struggled with injuries in recent years and has fallen to No. 88. He missed the entire 2022 season after a hip injury.
