Chinese automaker's flagship bakkie will have three trim levels and power from a new 2.5-litre turbodiesel engine.
Having made steady progress into the local market since its formal launch last year, LDV has released select details of its incoming Terron 9 flagship bakkie.
Confirmed to make its public debut at the Kyalami Festival of Motoring at the end of this month, the Terron 9 will slot-in above the T60, and compete in the more premium bakkie segment against the likes of the Ford Ranger Platinum, Volkswagen Amarok and GWM P500.
Stickered in Australia at the end of June, the South African-spec Terron 9 will be made available in three trim levels; Elite, Luxury and Premium, all powered by LDV's in-house developed 2.5-litre turbodiesel engine.
While no details surrounding the engine's specifications was divulged, Down Under, the mill develops 163kW/520Nm, which goes to the rear or all four wheels through a new eight-speed automatic gearbox.
Due out later, the Terron 9 will also offer an electric version, the eTerron 9, which debuted under the Maxus nameplate at the Nampo Agricultural Expo in Bothaville in the Free State in May. of
Dimensionally, the Terron 9 has an overall length of 5 500 mm, wheelbase of 3 300 mm, height of 1 874 mm and width of 1 997 mm.
Its claimed ground clearance is 220 mm, tow rating 3 500 kg and payload between 1 005 kg and 1 100 kg based on the Australian-market variant.
Able to ford 500 mm, the Terron 9 has an approach angle of 29-degrees, breakover angle of 20-degree and departure angle of 25-degrees.
In Australia, where two trim grades are offered, the Terron 9's specification sheet includes 18 or 20-inch alloy wheels, a four-speaker or eight-speaker JBL sound system, dual 12.3-inch displays, ambient lighting, a rubberised loadbin, rain sense wipers, heated, ventilated and massaging front seats, bi-LED headlights, up to two diff-locks and heated rear seats.
Safety comes via a 360-degree camera system, front and rear parking sensors, tyre pressure monitor, Adaptive Cruise Control, Autonomous Emergency Braking, Driver Attention Alert, Rear Cross Traffic Alert, Safe Exit Assist, Lane Keep Assist, Blind Spot Monitoring, Trailer Reverse, Lane Departure Warning and Traffic Sign Recognition.
Although priced from the equivalent of between R591 834 and R649 868 in Australia, speculation has hinted at the Terron 9 possibly having a starting sticker around R820 000 to R850 000 based on the T60's stickers ranging from R480 000 to R790 000.

China deploys robot antelope in Tibet to surveil real herds

Developed by Xinhua, the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Hangzhou-based DEEP Robotics, the robot antelope is equipped with 5G connectivity and artificial intelligence vision systems, enabling real-time monitoring of the migration, feeding and mating behaviours of the endangered species endemic to Tibet. China is offering its robotics industry tens of billions in subsidies and was host to the 2025 World Robot Conference, which wrapped up on Tuesday. 5G arrived in Tibet in 2019, according to Chinese government documents, and the southwestern region reached 1-million users by 2022. With the completion of a 5G base station in the town of Gogmo in late 2023, every district in Tibet was covered, state media reported. Beyond transmitting live images and tracking data on rare antelope species, Tibet's 5G infrastructure now supports a growing range of AI applications — from small drones that can operate in areas impenetrable to radar, to telemedicine consultations and smart yak herding technologies, according to Chinese state media reports. China has invested heavily in Tibet, boosting the at times restive region's role in President Xi Jinping's flagship Belt and Road infrastructure initiative by strengthening its trade ties with Central Asia, while also tightening surveillance over its population and extending Beijing's digital footprint towards neighbouring rival India. Analysts and human rights campaigners accuse Beijing of deploying "grey-zone" tactics against countries around the Tibetan plateau. A July report from the Center of Strategic and International Studies think tank documented instances of China leveraging local telecommunications networks to surveil dissidents living in neighbouring Nepal, alongside cases of cybertheft

Global EV sales up 21% in July as growth rate cools

Global electric vehicle (EV) sales grew 21% year-on-year in July, the slowest rate since January and down from 25% in June, as momentum in plug-in hybrid sales in China slackened, market research firm Rho Motion said on Wednesday. Why it's important China is the world's biggest car market and accounts for more than half of global EV sales, which in Rho Motion's data include battery-electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids. Its overall car sales growth slowed in July, with BYD, the world's largest EV maker, recording its third monthly drop in registrations. The relatively muted slowdown in overall EV sales, however, shows other markets are taking up some of the slack, with European sales benefiting from incentives aimed at speeding up decarbonisation. By the numbers Global sales of battery-electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids rose to 1.6-million units in July, Rho Motion data showed. China's EV sales growth, which averaged 36% a month in the first half, eased to 12% in July as the previously booming market was dampened by a pause in some 2025 government subsidy schemes for EV and plug-in hybrid purchases, Rho Motion data manager Charles Lester said. Chinese sales reached about one-million vehicles. European sales surged 48% to about 390,000 units, while North American sales climbed 10% to more than 170,000. Sales in the rest of the world jumped 55% to more than 140,000 vehicles. Key quote 'Despite regional variations, the overall trajectory for EV adoption in 2025 remains strongly upward,' Lester said. US and China extend tariff truce to November, averting escalation

President Trump signed an executive order on 11 August 2025, extending the US-China tariff truce by 90 days. The move delays a planned hike to 145% tariffs on Chinese goods and 125% on US exports. Both countries will maintain current rates of 30% for US tariffs and 10% for China until November 10. The White House cited the need to 'remedy trade imbalances' and 'preserve economic stability' during peak retail season. The extension follows bilateral negotiations held in Stockholm on 28-29 July 2025, under the Geneva Joint Statement framework. Delegates agreed to suspend 24% of additional ad valorem duties and ease non-tariff barriers. China committed to lifting certain export controls and suspending its 'unreliable entity' list restrictions. US officials confirmed the truce would allow time to address national security concerns and rare earth access. TECH EXPORTS AND OIL PURCHASES REMAIN STICKING POINTS Despite the truce, unresolved issues persist, including China's purchases of Russian oil and US tech export restrictions. Nvidia and AMD agreed to pay 15% of China-related AI chip revenues to the US government to retain export licences. Beijing has reportedly urged firms to avoid Nvidia's H20 chip, citing national security risks. Analysts warn that unresolved tensions, including tech export controls and oil purchases, could complicate or delay future trade negotiations, especially given that the tariff truce is set to expire in early November 2025. A summit between Trump and Xi Jinping is expected in late October, likely on the sidelines of the ASEAN Summit in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The expected Trump–Xi summit may advance negotiations on industrial subsidies, market access, and reciprocal tariffs, but no final trade deal has been confirmed.' Experts say the truce extension stabilises markets and signals diplomatic intent but warn that deeper structural issues remain unresolved. Analysts say the move 'boosts short-term confidence among importers and manufacturers,' particularly in sectors exposed to tariff volatility and supply chain disruptions.
