Perkeso: Job seekers urged to consider opportunities beyond their home states
KANGAR: Job seekers have been urged to be more open to challenges, by considering employment opportunities beyond their home states, rather than limiting themselves to local job options.
The Social Security Organisation's (Perkeso) Employment Insurance System (SIP) Office head, Datuk Asri Ab Rahman, said that job seekers should adopt a more flexible mindset, and be willing to accept suitable job offers, even if they are located in other states, as long as the positions offer long-term prospects and stability.
'Sometimes, job mismatches occur, not due to a lack of opportunities, but because candidates are unwilling to relocate. However, such cases are relatively isolated and tend to occur only in specific states,' he told reporters after attending the opening ceremony of the MYFutureJobs Career, Education & Entrepreneurship Carnival - Perlis 2025, here today.
The two-day career carnival, which began today, was launched by Perlis State Secretary Datuk Rahimi Ismail.
Meanwhile, Perkeso, in a statement, said that a total of 74,576 job seekers nationwide have successfully secured employment through placement programmes conducted in collaboration with various stakeholders.
'This achievement not only demonstrates the commitment of all involved in enhancing employment opportunities, but also offers new hope for job seekers to build a better future, through ongoing collaborative efforts,' it said.
It also noted that between January and June 13, Perlis Perkeso organised 33 open interview programmes, resulting in 522 individuals successfully securing new employment.
It added that a total of 14 individuals received Perkeso benefits, amounting to RM239,732.90, in conjunction with the carnival's opening ceremony today.
The benefits were provided under the Employees' Social Security Act 1969 (Act 4) and the Self-Employed Social Security Act 2017 (Act 789), covering various categories, including temporary disability benefit, permanent disability benefit, Survivors' Pension, and Invalidity Pension.

Ex-director claims millions found were business profits
KOTA KINABALU (June 25): A former director of the Sabah Water Department told the Sessions Court here today that the large amount of cash allegedly found by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) was derived from profits of business ventures with his partners. Ag Mohd Tahir Mohd Talib, 63, testified before judge Abu Bakar Manat, naming three business partners — one of whom was his brother — who were contractors involved in the ventures. He said he had provided business capital to them from his personal savings, though he could not recall the specific amounts as the arrangements dated back many years. The agreements, he added, were made orally without written documentation. Ag Mohd Tahir also stated that in addition to business profits, the cash in question included his salary. Taking the stand as the first defence witness, Ag Mohd Tahir read his testimony aloud in open court. His statement spans 155 pages. Under examination-in-chief, he testified to receiving substantial profits — RM5 million, RM30 million and RM12 million — from his partners, all in cash. He claimed to have roughly counted the money he received. He further asserted that the luxury vehicles and items allegedly found in his possession were purchased using both his salary and business profits. Ag Mohd Tahir is on trial alongside his wife, Fauziah Hj Piut, 58, and the department's former deputy director, Lim Lam Beng @ Lim Chee Hong, 69. He faces 11 charges under Section 4(1)(b) of the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act 2001, while Fauziah faces 19 similar charges. The couple also jointly face two additional charges under the same section. Ag Mohd Tahir has an additional charge under Section 4(1)(a) of the Act. The offences allegedly took place at various locations in Kota Kinabalu and Kuala Lumpur — including the department's office, a residence in Sembulan, bank branches, a condominium in Sulaman, and a tower in Kuala Lumpur — between October 4 and November 4, 2016. Meanwhile, Lim is accused of committing offences at the MACC office on Jalan UMS and at a residence in Kota Kinabalu between October 13 and November 8, 2016. The prosecution is led by Deputy Public Prosecutors Mahadi Abdul Jumaat, Haresh Prakash Somiah and Zander Lim. Ag Mohd Tahir and Fauziah are represented by counsel Datuk Hj Ansari Abdullah and Erveana Ansari, while Lim is represented by counsel Datuk Tan Hock Chuan, Baldev Singh, Karpaljit Singh and Kelvin Wong. The trial is scheduled to resume on June 26.

Sarawak, Australia's Northern Territory launch education collaboration

The forum was officiated by State Minister for Education, Innovation and Talent Development, Datuk Roland Sagah Wee Inn, who emphasised the significance of cross-regional cooperation to support future-ready workforce development. Sagah highlighted the initiative as timely and necessary, especially given Sarawak's rapid growth in sectors such as energy, construction, digital economy, and manufacturing. He noted that the Sarawak government has set an ambitious target of 500,000 skilled workers by 2030, requiring the state to produce at least 30,000 new skilled individuals annually. 'Education and talent development are critical to this effort,' he emphasised. The forum marked the Northern Territory Government's inaugural visit to Malaysia, represented by Minister for International Education, Migration and Population, Robyn Cahill OAM, who also serves as Minister for Trade, Business and Asian Relations. 'Sarawak is our very first stop and we see enormous opportunity here, especially in vocational training where both our regions face similar challenges in attracting youth,' said Cahill.
