
Omoda 9 SHS plug-in hybrid review: We drive it through nine countries to test its 700-mile range claims
Omoda, a brand freshly minted by the Chery Automotive empire in Wuhu, is taking on the likes of the Volvo XC60, Mercedes GLC and Audi Q5 with its new flagship 9 SHS SUV, which offers a head-turning 700 miles of combined electric and petrol range.
And it can do a sizeable chunk of that on electric power alone.
With a class-leading EV-only range of 93 miles alone, the 9 SHS leaves its Western competitors in the dust and threatens to make their tech look outdated with its 'Super Hybrid System'.
All while undercutting its German and Swedish plug-in hybrid rivals by at least £10,000 in the process and offering 'everything as standard'.
Omoda has not only entered the market with bold offerings, but with an equally bold approach to launches - not surprising as Chery has huge UK and European domination plans in the next year or two, and is China's biggest car exporter.
So, set the challenge, Freda Lewis-Stempel tested the 9 SHS on Omoda's epic 9-countries launch - a plug-in hybrid Grand Tour - to see if it will become one of the best-selling plug-in hybrids in the UK. And can you really can do 700 miles without needing to refuel or recharge?
Who is Omoda? Chery Automotive's latest brand
Omoda only made its UK brand debut last year, so it's not surprising if you haven't heard of it - yet.
Omoda arrived with its sister brand Jaecoo, which both fall under the Chery mothership – China's fourth largest car manufacturer. Read our Jaecoo 7 SHS review here.
What's the difference between Omoda and Jaecoo then? Omoda's PR explains the difference with a pithy comparison: Omoda is the Shoreditch to Jaecoo's Wimbeldon.
Omoda takes its name from 'oxygen' and 'mode' (French for fashion) and appeals to buyers with a more arty and futuristic tech-focused design. Jaecoo means a combination of Jager (German for hunter) and cool. It's design language is more mature and outdoorsy.
Both brands are on a huge UK market domination drive, but many buyers will be relieved to hear that Chery isn't focusing on just electric cars immediately unlike other Chinese brands.
Omoda arrived with a mix of powertrain options, launching last year with the petrol-powered Omoda 5 and all-electric E5 – both well-priced options costing £25,915 and £33,065 respectively – which shows very clearly the brand's approach to giving people choice.
As is the case with the new 9 SHS I drove across Europe, hybrids are the particular name of the Omoda game.
The approach seems to be working worldwide, as Chery reported a 38.4 per cent jump in global sales for 2024, selling 2.6million cars – with forecasts expecting that to rise to three million this year. And it's China's top car exporter, shipping 1.14million vehicles overseas.
The UK is the overseas market Chery has got its sights set firmly on now, with the 9 SHS marking three models launching here in less than a year.
And by the end of 2025 there should be eight models across the Omoda/Jaecoo brands, which you can buy at the soon to be 130-strong dealer network.
But the 9 SHS is the top of the Chinese brand's quiet luxury offering and needs to impress, so what is it actually like in the wild?
Putting the range and the 9 SHS to test over 700 miles - what's it like to drive
Somewhat reminiscent of my childhood summer holidays when my family would drive circuitously all through Europe to get down to Italy, passing through France, Luxembourg, Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, the Omoda test set off from Kent to drive nine countries (albeit nearby ones) on the Continent on a single tank of fuel.
Before I get to the whether the 9 SHS can indeed cover 700 miles on just one fill of its 70-litre petrol tank and one charge of its 34.46kWh battery pack, I have to give kudos to Omoda for those 93 miles of EV range.
It beats out everything including the Audi Q5 (62 miles), Volvo XC60 (51 miles) and Mercedes GLC (78 miles).
Because of that most drivers can do almost their whole five-day commute (around 100 miles on average) in EV mode.
Driving in EV-only mode allows you to go both emissions free and guilt free in town or for shorter trips.
It's complex and fancy hybrid system will ensure you always have charge too – it operates like a normal non-plug-in hybrid retaining some juice at low battery levels so you're never forced to use the engine only.
The only real dislike about driving the 9 SHS is the braking: It doesn't respond much initially and then when you apply more pressure it bites very suddenly
I didn't have as much opportunity as I would have liked to probably put it through its performance paces due to the nature of the range test, but the moments of speed I did see showed that its 449 PS gives you all the power you need
It also means your car will 'drive like an EV and think like a hybrid', Omoda promises, and there's no denying this rings true.
The gearbox is seamless once you're on the move so you feel you're gliding in an EV through city traffic, along undulating country roads and down long stretches of European motorway.
I wasn't flooring it because that and efficient driving doesn't exactly go hand in hand, but when I needed to tap into the 449 PS (442 bhp) and 0-62 in 4.9 seconds, the power was easily accessible.
The turbocharged 1.5-litre engine isn't the creme de la creme, but it's composed and potent, and makes up part of a enjoyable driving package.
The other part of said enjoyable driving package is the smoothness of the ride; the 9 SHS is undeniably comfortable and irons out all but severe road dips and roughness commendably.
Add accurate and nicely weighted steering, and the relaxing nature of regenerative braking (when the car uses kinetic energy to brake itself) and the 9 SHS is a very competent car for the budget conscious luxe buyer.
The only real issue is that the braking itself, which doesn't respond much initially and then when you apply more pressure bites very suddenly.
Braking becomes a bit of a rubber brand snapping back into place sensation – not the most enjoyable.

But back to the question in hand - can the 9 SHS make it on one tank? Yes, it can and it did. It's entirely doable, which is an impressive feat and delightful news for your bank account.
Omoda quotes an overall WLTP figure of 1.4 litres/100km from the 9 SHS.
I started on 700 miles, and by the time I had to tap out for last two countries and pass onto my co-driver to finish our efficiency test it was down to 199km (123 miles) with around 60 miles to go. It made it through all nine countries with 19 miles of fuel left and 13 miles of EV only range.
But don't expect to go fast – you'll be doing 90-100km on a 130km motorway for maximum efficient driving, which takes perhaps more patience than I have.
Still going slowly allows you to truly appreciate the way the landscape of Europe changes, so perhaps that's the other silver lining.
The new principle of everything as standard – is this the benchmark for other brands?
There's no doubt when driving the 9 SHS that Omoda's 'everything as standard' mantra really does ring true.
All but the kitchen sink's been thrown at it in the name of comfort and technology and as a result you are cocooned in a cabin of impressive luxury considering the price. It's not blow your mind luxe but its very well finished - it's not Bentley after all.
Two of the features I was most grateful for while driving Europe in a heatwave were the ventilated seats (a godsend) and the 1.3m panoramic sunroof with rain sensor.
Both front and rear passengers get ventilated seats (and heated for the winter). The front seats are 12-way electric with memory function, while the back recline at the touch of a button.
Between that, the acoustic glass removing practically all exterior noise, and the impressive amount of legroom in the rear, you'll have a hard time not falling asleep in the back.
Add the 256 interior lighting colours, the welcome light projection, the synthetic leather materials and aluminum dials, and it's a plush place to spend time – overall the cabin design is well executed.
Another favorite ambient feature is the PM3.0 Air Purification system which I clicked into action when farmyard smells became too much – cow and horse manure is fine, chicken is where I draw the line.
The interior is well-designed and pretty luxurious for the price, with synthetic leather, aluminum accents, a 24.6-inch touchscreen, heated and ventilated front and rear seats, and a panoramic sunroof
Other very useful features are the 540-degree camera with transparent view, Automatic Parking Assistant that will park itself, 20-plus ADAS features, wireless charging, head-up display, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and a (very good) SONY 14-speaker sound system.
The 24.6-inch curved display is a big step-up from the sister Jaecoo 7 SHS' 14.8-inch system and is much easier to use.
The Omoda app takes you straight back to all the in-system settings for quick access, or you can use the shortcut on the steering wheel for vehicle settings.
The only major issue I had was the quick access menu that you had to swipe down with a lighter-than-a-feather touch - trying to get this to appear could take so long you'd have crossed several borders while faffing.
But the Omoda team said they'd already fed that back and it would be changed soon, so it won't be a long-lasting gripe at least.
And there are 53 buttons and physical controls throughout so it's not like you're dependent on the touchscreen either.
Practicality and charging times
I've already touched on how spacious the rear of the car is (although headroom isn't immense), but the 9 SHS also aims to deliver family-friendly capacity.
There's a 660-litre boot and the rear seats fold 60/40. With all the seats down, you can stuff 1,783 litres worth of (probably unnecessary) luggage in, and there's a lot of storage throughout including a chilled centre console storage compartment.
There's vehicle-to-load allowing you to charge appliances - a handy feature and a benefit of the hybrid powertrain.
It can DC fast charge up to 70kW giving you a recharge from 30 to 80 per cent in as little as 25 minutes. 11kW home charging takes around eight hours from 0 to 100 per cent.
Pricing and deliveries – when can you buy your Omoda 9 SHS?
Already is the answer. Order books are open and deliveries have started, so you can get yourself an Omoda 9 SHS whenever you want.
And you will pay £44,990 – no hidden surprises or trims walk ups, just this Omoda 'everything as standard' promise.
Included in this is a seven-year/100,000 mile warranty (whichever comes first) with no mileage limit for the first three years. There's also an eight-year battery warranty and RAC breakdown cover thrown in.
The Omoda 9 SHS only costs £44,990 with everything as standard - no hidden costs or trim walk ups. It could very well go straight to the top of PHEV wish lists because of how much you get for that price
Omoda 9 SHS: Cars and Motoring verdict
It's running on delivering 'premium without the price premium' and there's no doubt it's doing that.
And I was impressed that Omoda has ironed out a fair few of the Jaecoo's problems already, and it seems that the Chinese maker is working double time to finesse its cars for British buyers.
With the government now allowing manufacturers to sell plug-in hybrids and hybrids until 2035 instead of 2030, drivers are responding to these relaxed rules by snapping up plug-in hybrids.
So, it's sensible that Chery and Omoda are right there offering a sensibly priced very long range PHEV when sales of plug-ins are soaring and people are opting to dodge going fully-electric while they still have time.
We'll have to see how sales go, but it looks like Omoda's got itself ahead of the competition with a SUV that looks good, drives well considering the price point, and is premium on the inside.
I'd say the 9 SHS is a box office hit rather than an Oscar nominee: mass-market Avengers Endgame appeal, just don't expect the Academy to ever deign to give a Chinese-made SUV an award.

Christine Colbert, 58, has suffered a series of 'catastrophic' setbacks which have routinely threatened to destroy Dress Cheshire, the beloved boutique she set up in the celebrity enclave of Prestbury back in November 2018. In the last five years, she has fallen victim to the notorious 'Kardashian of Cheshire' handbag fraudster, lost £430,000 worth of stock in two separate heists and suffered £10,000 in damage when the building next door was blown up by arsonists. On one occasion, she even had to take matters into her own hands by wrestling a shoplifter to the ground after they stuffed one of her Louis Vuitton handbags in an Aldi bag before brazenly walking out the front door. Speaking exclusively to the Daily Mail, Ms Colbert said: 'I have felt like a target, a massive target. It's made me very anxious and more nervous... I've had some very, very dark days.' She added: 'As a business, we've been rocked absolutely to the core through all of these unfortunate events. We're not sitting there feeling sorry for ourselves, but it's just been catastrophic. You couldn't write it.' Dress Cheshire suffered its first major burglary in March 2024 when four men scaled the back of the building, ripped out a window and drained the company of £180,000 worth of handbags in a terrifying heist. In the same month, she turned 'Miss Marple' to help bring down Jack Watkin, the self-proclaimed 'rich kid of Instagram' who conned victims including Ms Colbert out of thousands of pounds in an elaborate designer handbag scam. The scammer, who described himself as the 'Kardashian of Cheshire', persuaded people to invest huge sums - which he claimed was to buy and sell luxury handbags - but stole the money to fund his millionaire lifestyle. 'And I said, "Don't tell me we're being burgled again." She said it wasn't us directly but the shop might catch fire if we don't get the gas turned off.' Unfortunately, this was just the latest in a string of 'traumatic' incidents for Ms Colbert. On June 8 this year, she was forced to watch a group of brazen thieves steal £250,000 worth of luxury handbags after tunneling through her shop. Three intruders circumvented Dress Cheshire's sophisticated security set-up by identifying the 3ft wide chimney stack as a weakness. Having smashed their way through, one used a duvet cover as a giant pouch to steal the highly sought-after pre-owned bags from brands including Chanel, Gucci, Dior, and Louis Vuitton. Live CCTV footage showed the skilled thieves ransacking the shop, where bags valued at as much as £30,000 were snatched. The second heist coincided with the start of Watkin's trial in June. Ms Colbert said: 'I knew June was going to be a horrendous month. I didn't anticipate the heist, who could. 'Because of the arson next door, that led to the heist because that building has been unoccupied since then and boarded up. So they took advantage of that situation and were going in and out.' When asked if she feels like the unluckiest business owner in Britain, she said: 'Well, yes and no. My cup's always half full... but I feel like I've definitely had my share of bad luck and it has been horrible. 'Throughout all of the frauds and the robberies, nobody really knew that I was dealing with Jack.' She added: 'Don't get me wrong, I think any one of those things could topple someone completely, and just have them thinking, I don't need this. But then also they're not going to knock me over. Absolutely no chance. 'Why would I allow these horrible individuals of all different categories that they are try and topple me, but don't get me wrong, I have felt like a massive target. 'We're a small business, we're not a big multi-million pound business. I've lost my own personal money here and people don't see that. 'I'm a northern girl. I don't come from a wealthy family. I just come from Northern grit. You just pick yourself up, dust yourself down and crack on. That's what my parents told me to do and that's what I've done.' In between the major heists and sickening fraud from a 'friend', Ms Colbert has also faced a terrifying credit scam from fraudsters posing as customers in her shop. Explaining how it works, she told the Mail: 'We've had people in trying to intercept our payment gateways. They literally try and keep us preoccupied whilst they make fraudulent payments in our card terminals. 'They blatantly walk in, they say they're going to buy a £5,000 bag, and then they try and use the machine for their own gain, and so not only steal the bag, but steal my money and empty my bank account at the same time.' She explained how they usually operate in pairs, with one talking to her and the other 'punching in' numbers to the card machine. The cunning plot sees the payment go through as a 'customer not present' transaction, allowing them to walk out with the bag before ringing their bank to say their card has been compromised in order to get a refund. Watkin posed as a millionaire on social media to persuade people – including his own father - to invest in his fake designer handbag business But this is a fraction of the fraud carried out by Watkin, a man who Ms Colbert thought was a friend before he rinsed her bank account. The 26-year-old former public schoolboy promised his victims - including Ms Colbert - a share of the profits if they loaned him cash to buy and sell expensive Hermes bags. But neither the handbags or any profit ever materialised and instead Watkin used the cash to fund his extravagant lifestyle. At one stage he spent weeks living at the five-star Dorchester Hotel, in London 's Mayfair, where rooms cost up to £3,000-a-night. Police said his bill topped £136,000 in just six months. He also paid more than £22,000 to travel around the capital in a chauffeur-driven Rolls Royce and regularly visited Harrods, where he 'scouted' for victims and spent almost £68,000. Ms Colbert spent three years trying to get back almost £44,000 she had loaned Watkin when she decided to take matters into her own hands in March 2024. With the help of Watkin's close friend, Hannah Jakes, 34, who was also defrauded of almost £100,000, the pair lured the fake millionaire, who was on the run from police, to a local pub with the promise of more cash. Ms Colbert revealed how she wore a 'large hat' as a disguise and hid in someone else's car in the car park of The Merlin public house, in Alderley Edge, Cheshire, so he would not recognise her. But as soon as the unsuspecting Watkin arrived Mrs Colbert swung into action and dialled 999. Minutes later detectives from Cheshire police swooped to arrest him. Watkin was convicted in June after Ms Colbert helped bring him down and and will be sentenced in September. But to her utter disbelief, while most of Watkin's victims have all been paid back, Ms Colbert remains more than £44,000 down. As of October last year, the Government made it a law that banking institutions had to repay customers who have been a victim of fraud where the bank could have stopped it. 'All the main banking institutions had signed up to this and as a result of Jack being actually convicted, they have repaid the victims - except the one bank that I sent money to Jack from wasn't signed up to the scheme, and they won't pay me back. 'So I brought everything to justice, everyone gets their money back and I have had a £300 cheque of a thanks very much for your hard work.' Ms Colbert opened her business up in Prestbury in November 2018 before going online during the pandemic. Along with Wilmslow and Alderley Edge, Prestbury makes up the so-called Golden Triangle of towns favoured by Cheshire celebrities and sports stars. Ex-Manchester United star Wayne Rooney and his wife Coleen used to live there until they moved to a £20million home they designed nearby. However the area has been frequently targeted by burglars including a gang who snatched more than 100 rare handbags worth over £1million when they raided a home in Alderley Edge in March.

China serves plan for competitive tennis ecosystem
HONG KONG, Aug 21 (Reuters) - China has unveiled a detailed plan to build and implement a tennis ecosystem, from boosting the number of top professional players and creating Chinese tournament brands to expanding the availability of courts and infrastructure across the country. In a document released on Wednesday night, China's official sporting body said it would encourage cities, businesses, schools and villages to "vigorously develop tennis" and build a new training system to develop top talent. The document said China would strive to "cultivate more than 10 high-level professional players (ranked in the top 100 in the world) and more than 100 professional players and coaches active in international competitions". China has seen growing enthusiasm for tennis since Zheng Qinwen, 22, became the first Chinese player to win an Olympic tennis singles gold medal at the Paris Olympics last year. Chinese tennis players have also become more visible at Grand Slam tournaments and on the ATP tour, including Zhang Shuai, Zhang Zhizhen and Wu Yibing. Chine aims to establish 10 "strong tennis provinces" and "100 strong tennis cities" with youth training centres and tens of thousands of youth tennis clubs, the document said. China will strengthen the "tennis tournament economy" to expand the flow of tennis tournaments and drive the growth of tennis consumption, as well as promoting tennis leisure and tourism routes. It called for "deepening the integration of tennis tournaments and urban development to drive local economic development", the sale of tennis themed cultural and creative products.

Europe's sanctions on Russia were to starve Putin's funds - instead something else has happened
Why is Donald Trump threatening to impose sanctions, or tariffs, or maybe both, on India in relation to the Ukraine war? The short answer is that India has established itself as one of the single most important customers for one of the single most important products made in Russia: crude oil. You only have to glance at the data on Russian fossil fuel exports to see what I mean. Nor is it just India. China has raised its imports of Russian fossil fuels by 44% since the imposition of sanctions. Back before the invasion of Ukraine in 2022, by far and away the biggest recipient of Russian energy exports was Europe. Then Europe imposed sanctions on various different Russian products, most notably oil. The idea was to starve Vladimir Putin of the revenues he is using to fund the Russian war machine. Instead, something else happened: those Russian tankers which previously delivered oil to Europe instead started sending it to Indian oil refineries. The Middle Eastern oil tankers that had previously served those Russian refineries began sending their oil to Europe. Nothing, fundamentally, really changed. And while Europeans are no longer taking direct shipments of Russian oil, they are taking plenty of shipments of oil products - from diesel and petrol to kerosene - made from Russian oil in Indian refineries. In the face of this, Europe and its G7 allies have subsequently begun to try to prevent those tankers from taking Russian oil at all. A price cap was imposed on legitimate shipping companies, limiting the amount of revenue Russia could derive from its exports. That, in turn, created another step-shift: Russia began to build up its own "shadow fleet" of tankers which it used to carry on sending oil to India and China. And so, in the latest episode of sanctions "whack-a-mole", the G7 has begun to implement a separate round of bans on that shadow fleet. Now, the point is not that any of these measures were pointless. Each has made a marginal difference in clamping down on Russia and limiting its revenues. But the whole exercise has proved far harder than expected. All of which is why Donald Trump is now talking about raising tariffs or imposing sanctions on India. He has discussed imposing secondary sanctions on countries continuing to do business with Russia. For all that he is being painted as one of Vladimir Putin's closest allies, in reality, these are dramatic economic levers that even Joe Biden stopped short of pulling. The question is whether they do indeed get activated - and what happens next in the game of sanctions "whack-a-mole".
