'Why am I staying here?': Chinese H-1B redditor reveals boredom of life in US suburb, asks if he should go back

Chinese Redditor says waiting for green card feels like an endless process.
A Redditor who later revealed his identity as a Chinese working in the US on an H-1B visa shared the monotony of working life in the US and asked for suggestions whether he should look for some jobs in China.
The person said staying in the US without friends and relatives, waiting for green card for which the wait is only getting longer, feels like a waste of prime.
"This is the second year of my H1b and I'm already 29. I have few friends and no relatives in US. I feel everyday my life is work, go back home and then exercise, that's it. Maybe several travels in a year, but most of the time solo trip. It's boring and endless to lock myself in a small firm in suburb, only because they sponsor my visa and GC (perm started early this year).
I checked the timeline of perm processing, and it's almost 2-3 years.
I just can't see my future - and am very confusing now. Why am I staying here during the best time of my life?" the person wrote, adding that looking for an alternative job in a big city is also not a viable option as recruiters are not interested to hire someone without a green card.
Redditor reveals boredom of living in US suburb, working at a small firm.
The post reveals the struggles the H-1B visa holders go through in teh US while they are blamed for stealing US tech jobs.
The comment section was a mixed bag of opinions but many told the Redditor to choose happiness over a green card.
"Do what will make you happy. Do you want to stay in America forever, or are there other countries that you could move to? I've been here for 3 years. Have H1B and very supportive employer (and an approved labour market test). We have decided that USA isn't for us long term. its fine right now, but doesn't fit into our life long goals, but 5 more years of H1B is fine.
its ok to not want to want what others want..." one wrote.
"im also from china and stuck with my current employer. it's hard to make friends here when everyone's friendship was already established in school. holidays suck cuz I don't have family here to spend with. I hate it when people ask me if i have any plans for any holidays. on top of that i havent even started green card process lol," another wrote.

Rio to host BRICS summit wary of Donald Trump; China's Jinping to be absent

A summit of BRICS nations will convene in Rio de Janeiro on Sunday and Monday, with members hoping to weigh in on global crises while tiptoeing around US President Donald Trump 's policies. The city, with beefed-up security, will play host to leaders and diplomats from 11 emerging economies including China, India, Russia and South Africa, which represent nearly half of the world's population and 40 percent of its GDP . Brazil's left-wing President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva will have to navigate the absence of Chinese President Xi Jinping , who will miss the summit for the first time. Beijing will instead be represented by its Prime Minister Li Qiang . Russian leader Vladimir Putin , who is facing a pending International Criminal Court (ICC) arrest warrant, will not travel to Brazil, but is set to participate via video link, according to the Kremlin. Live Events Iran's President Masoud Pezeshkian , fresh from a 12-day conflict with Israel and a skirmish with the United States , will also be absent, as will his Egyptian counterpart Abdel Fattah al-Sissi, a Brazilian government source told AFP. Tensions in the Middle East, including Israel's ongoing war in Gaza, will weigh on the summit, as well as the grim anticipation of tariffs threatened by Trump due next week. 'Cautious' "We're anticipating a summit with a cautious tone: it will be difficult to mention the United States by name in the final declaration," Marta Fernandez, director of the BRICS Policy Center at Rio's Pontifical Catholic University told AFP. China, for example, "is trying to adopt a restrained position on the Middle East", Fernandez said, pointing out that Beijing was also in tricky tariff negotiations with Washington. "This doesn't seem to be the right time to provoke further friction" between the world's two leading economies, the researcher said. BRICS members did not issue a strong statement on the Iran-Israel conflict and subsequent US military strikes due to their "diverging" interests, according to Oliver Stuenkel, an international relations professor at the Getulio Vargas Foundation. Brazil nevertheless hopes that countries can take a common stand at the summit, including on the most sensitive issues. "BRICS (countries), throughout their history, have managed to speak with one voice on major international issues, and there's no reason why that shouldn't be the case this time on the subject of the Middle East," Brazil's Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira told AFP. 'Multilateralism' However, talks on finding an alternative to the dollar for trade between BRICS members are likely dead in the water. For Fernandez, it is almost "forbidden" to mention the idea within the group since Trump threatened to impose 100 percent tariffs on countries that challenge the dollar's international dominance. Brazil, which in 2030 will host the COP30 UN climate conference, also hopes to find unity on the fight against climate change. Artificial intelligence and global governance reform will also be on the menu. "The escalation of the Middle East conflict reinforces the urgency of the debate on the need to reform global governance and strengthen multilateralism," said foreign minister Vieira. Since 2023, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates, Ethiopia, Iran and Indonesia have joined the BRICS, formed in 2009 as a counter-balance to leading Western economies. But, as Fernandez points out, this expansion "makes it all the more difficult to build a strong consensus."

Distressed Builder Parkview Weighs Selling Artwork to Repay Debt

(Bloomberg) -- Hong Kong builder Parkview Group is considering selling artwork worth over HK$200 million ($25.5 million) to pay down debt and help secure a refinancing deal linked to one of Beijing's most iconic complexes, according to people familiar with the matter. Parkview is mulling to sell over 300 artworks displayed at Parkview Green to repay a small part of a $940 million loan due in August, the people said, who asked not to be named discussing private matters. The valuation of the art is provided by the company to the banks. The cash-strapped developer has been in months-long talks with banks for the refinancing, which would extend the maturity by three years, the people said. Parkview is offering some other residential properties in Beijing as additional collateral, on top of Parkview Green, according to one of the people. Parkview didn't respond to requests for comment. Parkview's credit enhancement proposal comes as worries grow over the builder's ability to repay the facility. Rental income generated from the commercial complex — which includes office towers, a shopping mall, an art center and a boutique hotel — fell short of covering the loan's interest expenses, Bloomberg News reported. Parkview is also among the many smaller Hong Kong developers experiencing liquidity stress as banks tighten their screws by demanding stricter refinancing terms and higher credit enhancements amid a years-long slump in the city's real estate sector. Located in Beijing's central business district, Parkview Green houses art pieces from the likes of Salvador Dali and Chinese artists such as Chen Wenling and Wang Luyan, according to its website. Dali's renowned Dragon Swan Elephant sculpture, is among the artwork potentially up for sale, said one of the people. Separately, Parkview held discussions with international auction house Sotheby's for a loan backed by more than 200 artworks, but the talks hit a standstill, Bloomberg News reported. The company was also tapping private credit for at least HK$2.8 billion in funding, and then managed to secure HK$300 million from investment firm PAG earlier this year. --With assistance from Emma Dong. To keep an edge over its rivals, the company reportedly also offers massive salary compensation to its AI engineers to attract and retain top talent. According to recent federal filings, the top AI research engineer at Meta is drawing a base salary of up to $440,000 — approximately Rs 3.76 crore at current exchange figures have been drawn from documents submitted by the company for the H-1B visa programme. These disclose details around what tech companies offer to their talent — excluding bonuses, equity grants, and other benefits. While the $440,000 figure represents the top base pay for AI research engineers at Meta, it does not reflect the compensation structure of other roles. For instance, salaries for machine learning engineers range between $165,000 and $440,000, while senior research scientists and technical programme managers also earn upwards of $230,000. It should be noted that these figures do not include additional incentives like restricted stock units (RSUs), which are a major component of compensation at tech giants — especially for roles tied to artificial filings also show high packages for talent working in data science and software engineering. A software engineer at Meta can earn as much as $480,000 in base salary, while data science managers and directors earn between $248,000 and $320,000. Product managers, designers, and user experience researchers also receive base pay well into six Meta is not alone in the game of offering big compensation to talent.
