Moment vigilante Italian councillor catches female pickpocket in the act in Venice before alerting crowds of tourists
Monica Poli, known as Lady Pickpocket, spends her time touring the piazzas and ferry jetties of the famous lagoon city while keeping an eye out for the crooks.
The modern-day Artful Dodgers – made famous in the Charles Dickens classic Oliver Twist – are the scourge of Venice, which sees more than 30 million tourists a year.
Although the majority of visitors leave with no issue, so far 900 have been victims to pickpockets.
Armed with just her phone Mrs Poli - who is a Northern League councillor - tours Venice and knows the majority of the 'dippers' by sight.
When she sees them, she screams out in Italian and English 'Attention Pickpockets', usually sending the would-be thieves running.
In one of her most recent videos, Mrs Poli caught a female pickpocket red handed as she targeted an unsuspecting tourist in Venice.
Dressed smartly, the young woman easily blends in with other travellers as she follows her target over the famous Rialto Bridge.
Using a map as cover the girl manages to unfasten her victim's handbag but is thwarted as the woman quickens her pace.
At that moment Mrs Poli confronts her and asks in Italian:'What are you doing ?' before the clip ends with the pickpocket scowling as she tries to hide her face.
In another video which Mrs Poli shared with MailOnline, three young girls, who are known pickpockets, can be seen in a square in the centre of Venice, but when they see they are being filmed, they disappear.
Another video shows Mrs Poli confronting three men on a jetty while they try to board a crowded boat carrying tourists.
One is dressed in a yellow T shirt, bucket hat and carrying a rucksack and as he spots that he is being filmed he darts off into the street as Mrs Poli alerts tourists: 'Pickpocket, watch out thieves.'
An accomplice of the man is also seen leaving the jetty after being pointed out and a third tries to blend into the crowd before deciding that he too will make good his escape and run up the street.
Shouting at him in Italian she says: 'Off the jetty, thief, get off the jetty,' as he waves his arms in frustration at her while tourists look on and some even applaud her for her quick thinking.
Mrs Poli's crime fighting exploits caome as Venice's deputy police chief Gianni Franzoi revealed 900 wallets and purses had been recovered since the start of the year – enough to fill 15 black bin bags.
Officials said that 100 pickpockets and bag snatchers had been arrested but they were also fighting a losing battle as gangs were now using children as young as 12 and 13 and so therefore under the age of criminal responsibility.
Favoured spots for pickpockets in Venice include crowd boarding ferries, the streets leading to St Mark's Square and the Rialto bridge which are tiny and cramped and so when a pickpocket brushes past the victim and helps themselves, they know nothing.
But it's not just tourists who have fallen victim,
Diplomats based in the city and an Arab sheikh have also fallen foul of the young pickpockets who even if they are caught are usually released without charge because of their age.
Mrs Poli said: 'This is a real problem for us in the city, the age of these criminals because they are so young the police can do nothing but let them go.
'They should be at school or playing with their friends not out stealing wallets and purses for Mr Bigs – it really is like something from Oliver Twist and the bad guys are just like Mafias.'
Mrs Poli – who also runs a campaign group called Non Distratti (don't get distracted) – has been fighting for years to tackle the problem and regularly posts on social media clips of herself confronting pickpockets.
One video has amassed an amazing two million clicks as she confronted one pickpocket who took flight – but not before spitting at her as he fled the pontoon jetty.
Both Mrs Poli and Mr Franzoi highlighted how a law change in 2022 has also made it more difficult for pickpockets to be convicted even if they are caught and charged.
Known as the Cartabia reform after former Italian MP and justice minister Marta Cartabia introduced it, the measure changed the way in how minor crimes were handled by the country's justice system in an attempt to speed up cases and clear backlogs.
With regard to pickpockets it meant the victim had to make a formal complaint and then also turn up at trial and if they didn't the charge was annulled – but as both Mr Franzoi and Mrs Poli pointed out many victims are 'overseas tourists' and simply don't bother.
Mr Franzoi added: 'We have been tasked with tackling pickpockets since the 1990s and we have a dedicated squad but over the years the number of incidents has increased considerably.
'In the early 2000s it was mainly Romani men and women but in recent years it's younger people and especially girls, mainly children who live in camps outside Venice and they are all part of organised gangs.
'They are very accomplished and know that they can act with impunity because of their age and all we can do is give then a sheet of paper telling them to leave the city limits which they do but then they just come back.
'The Cartabia reform has really made it difficult for us to secure prosecutions because it needs the victim to make a complaint and turn up for the trial but a foreign tourist is not coming back for a trial over a stolen wallet or purse.'
Mrs Poli added:' The city of Venice is a labyrinth of alleys and side-streets and by the time you call the police and they arrive the pickpockets have gone but they all know me, and I know have to be very careful.
'I've been threatened and spat at but I am not going to back down and will carry on, what really upsets me is when I see old people and disabled people being pick-pocketed, that makes me so angry and makes me want to fight on.'
Mrs Poli also shared her tips for not being pick-pocketed in Venice and did say the chances were small but advised: 'Keep your bag in front of you with the zip shut and put your hands over it if you can.
'Be careful in crowds especially in the streets and if someone brushes past you double check to make sure you have your wallet or purse – the problem is pickpockets dress just like you and me in Venice.
'A lot of it is common sense, don't keep important documents with your credit cards, keep them separate and if you have a bag make sure it has an inside zip pocket.'

British businessman ‘was having affair with daughter-in-law he tried to drown'
A British businessman was having an affair with his daughter-in-law, whom he is accused of trying to drown in Florida, it has been claimed. Mark Gibbon, 62, has been charged with attempted murder after allegedly holding Jasmine Wyld's head underwater while the pair were on holiday. Police were called to reports of a disturbance at the Solterra Resort in Davenport, Florida, on Saturday evening where Mr Gibbon was staying with Ms Wyld and her two children. According to Ms Wyld and witnesses, Mr Gibbon was in the swimming pool with his 33-year-old daughter in-law when the pair started arguing about his grandchildren, police said. Polk County Sheriff's Office said: 'Gibbon is accused of pushing and holding the victim's head underwater multiple times, preventing her from breathing. 'The victim's nine-year old daughter jumped into the pool in an attempt to stop Gibbon from drowning her mother.' A family source told MailOnline Mr Gibbon had been in a romantic relationship with Ms Wyld, a British hairdresser, for the past two years after their respective marriages broke down. Ms Wyld is divorced from Mr Gibbon's son, Alex, with whom she shares two children. The source said: 'A family source told us that Alex and his father no longer speak – and last year Alex was jailed for trying to drive a car at his estranged father. 'Mark and Jasmine have been seeing each other for a few years, but they've never admitted it. 'Alex and his dad don't speak at all. There have been a number of issues within the family. 'He feels an awful betrayal at how his dad has struck up a relationship with the mother of his two children. 'Mark and Jasmine do an awful lot together and they go away on holiday with the children a couple of times every year.' 'Will caused tension' The source went on: 'She is always round at his house. She has a place of her own but she's nearly always in Beaconsfield with Mark. 'They went to Florida two years ago and have been to Budapest where she posted pictures of them together like a couple. 'I don't know for sure what happened on this holiday and why Mark has apparently tried to drown her. 'But I have been told that Jasmine was unhappy that they have been in a relationship for a few years and she is not named in his will.' The source revealed that Mr Gibbon was due to leave his entire £800,000 estate to his two grandchildren. The source said: 'His will has caused some tension in the family.' Alex, 34, had worked with his father and was appointed a director with Ultralight UK Limited in 2019. However, he left the company in 2023 and following an argument with his father, ran him over. He was sentenced to a jail term and was released six months ago. The younger Gibbon also pleaded guilty to harassing Ms Wyld in the past. County Sheriff Grady Judd said: 'We expect vacationers to behave while they visit with us. Because Mr Gibbon couldn't control his anger, he may find himself spending a lot more time in Florida than he had anticipated.' US police said Mr Gibbon allegedly admitted to pushing his daughter-in-law underwater, but said he did not intend to drown her.

Clown mask-wearing survivalist massacred family after breaking into home in horror spree before 4 month manhunt
A SADISTIC survivalist who killed an entire family after breaking into their home has been found dead after a four-month manhunt. Chilling TikTok videos of the mass murderer, posted in the weeks following the attack, showed him laughing maniacally at the camera while wearing a creepy clown mask. 7 7 Alexander Meisner, a 61-year-old Kazakh national, massacred an entire German family including a teenager and his parents. Meisner, himself a dad-of-five and grandfather, entered the Schulze family home in the Rhineland village of Weitefeld in the early hours of April 6. He carried out the evil assault in the dead of night armed with a knife and a gun. Nadine Schulze, a 44-year-old employee of a local butcher, was able to call the police and scream for help down the phone as Meisner entered the house. Moments later, she was stabbed and shot dead by Meisner. Police quickly responded to the haunting call and rushed round to the house. They found Nadine's lifeless body alongside her 47-year-old husband Kai and Kilian, the couple's 16-year-old son. All three had suffered fatal injuries from gunshot and stab wounds. Some of the family were reportedly found bound with cable ties. Meisner, now nicknamed the "Westerwald Killer" had already managed to escape the scene. Devil's Den 'killer' James Andrew McGann scowls in chilling mugshot after 'murdering 2' as it's confirmed he's a TEACHER He is believed to have fled through a window and quickly became the focus of an international manhunt when he was named as the lead suspect. Police had issued an arrest warrant along with a reward of up to €10,000 leading to his capture. Interpol also confirmed that a Red Notice had been issued for his arrest after a request by German authorities. Then on April 26, nearly three weeks after the murders, several horrifying videos were shared of Meisner online. One showed the man maniacally laughing as he stared into the camera all as he wore a clown mask. Another posted the same day showed him stripped down to his underwear and pouring freezing buckets of ice water over his head. Officials are still unsure if Meisner was behind the clips being posted onto TikTok or if they were posted on his behalf. This is due to his body being found less than 2,000ft away from the Schulze's home on August 5. 7 7 Cops said the badly decomposed corpse was partially hidden in a underwater in a swampy farmland between Weitefeld and Neunkhausen in Altenkirchen. A firearm was also found next to his remains. Detectives said due to the body's condition it is nearly impossible to determine an exact cause of death or when Meisner actually died. They are still investigating if he took his own life, died from his injuries during the killing spree or faced another grim demise. Meisner was a known criminal to police as he had previously spent time in jail for headbutting and stabbing his ex-wife. He was sentenced to four years and nine months in prison in 2011 after attempting to murder his ex-wife, Theresa. Meisner is said to have only stopped the attack after one of his sons stopped him from finding another knife. Neighbours had also warned of the behaviour from Meisner in the years before the family massacre. Melanie Hoechtlen said she reported him for harassment in October 2023. She told Bild: "He ambushed my dog and me on the path. Then he came close and asked if he could lick me. "I reported him back then. He said he had been a lone fighter in his homeland of Kazakhstan and knew how to survive in the forest for weeks." Police have announced they have ended their investigations into the murders now that Meisner's body has been found. Mario Mannweiler, senior public prosecutor, concluded: "The fact that the whereabouts of the suspected perpetrator remained unknown for months has troubled us. "The fact that the suspect is no longer alive was an obvious option for many reasons, but without a body, other options had to be pursued. In any case, I'm relieved that this has now come to an end."

Villarreal confirm Partey signing and address sexual offence charges in statement
Villarreal have confirmed the signing of Thomas Partey on a free transfer after the expiry of his contract with Arsenal. The move was announced two days after the 32-year-old appeared in court charged with six sexual offences. Partey was bailed to appear at the Old Bailey for trial later this year, charged with five counts of rape relating to two women and a charge of sexual assault against a third woman. The alleged offences are said to have taken place in 2021 and 2022 when Partey was playing for Arsenal. The Ghana international has signed a one-season contract and will join the Villarreal squad in training on Friday. His arrival has upset fans of the Spanish club, with hundreds signing a petition urging a halt to what has been described as the 'darkest day in the club's history'. Villarreal said in a statement: 'The club is aware that the player is currently involved in legal proceedings in England. The player firmly maintains his innocence and denies all charges against him. The club respects the fundamental principle of the presumption of innocence and will await the outcome of the judicial process, which will be responsible for clarifying the facts of the case. Due to the law in England in relation to ongoing proceedings, the club is unable to comment further. 'Villarreal CF wishes to clearly reiterate its strong commitment to respect and diversity and firmly condemns any act of violence in all its forms, including gender-based violence, discrimination, racism, xenophobia or any behaviour that undermines the dignity of individuals.' Partey made 167 appearances for Arsenal after joining from Atlético Madrid in 2020. Villarreal beat Arsenal 3-2 in a friendly on Wednesday.
