We Finally Got a Madonna Biopic Update and...It's Complicated

Yahoo5 days ago
For anyone still wondering whatever happened to that long-rumored Madonna biopic—yes, it's still happening. Sort of. Maybe. According to Julia Garner, the project is alive… it's just taking its sweet time.
During a recent appearance on the SmartLess podcast with Jason Bateman, Will Arnett and Sean Hayes, Garner confirmed that the highly anticipated film is 'supposed to still happen.'
Garner has been attached to the Madonna role since 2022, hot off her run as Anna Delvey in Netflix's Inventing Anna. At the time, multiple outlets reported she was the pop icon's top pick after a competitive audition process that involved intense dance training—and performing in front of Madonna herself.
'It just came about… I knew they were making a movie about her and I went out to audition,' Garner explained of how she nabbed the role. 'I kind of just wanted to see if I could do it.' Her approach? Channel Madonna's own energy. 'I asked myself what Madonna would do—which is like, convince you she deserves to be in this room,' she said. 'And I owned it.'
The biopic faced setbacks along the way. In early 2023, Variety reported that Universal had pulled back on development. Still, Madonna and Garner remained in touch. They were photographed together at Steven Klein's birthday party in May 2023, and in December of that year, Garner even joined Madonna onstage during a stop on her Brooklyn tour.

By July 2024, Madonna had shared that work on the script was back on, teasing a working title: Who's That Girl—a clear nod to her 1987 film and hit single of the same name. Then, in May 2025, Deadline reported that the project may have taken a new form entirely: a limited series at Netflix, now with Deadpool & Wolverine director Shawn Levy attached.
So, yes, the Madonna story is still coming. But whether it's a movie, a series or something else entirely… we'll just have to wait and see. Stay tuned.

3 underrated Netflix movies you should watch this weekend (August 8-10)

When Netflix introduced streaming, it fundamentally changed the way we watch everything. And, while streaming has come with plenty of perks, it's also given us more choices about what we can watch, which necessarily leaves us wondering what we should spend time watching. If you've browsed Netflix for something worthy of your time and decided that you should go to bed instead, you're not alone. We've pulled together a list of three underrated movies on Netflix that are all worth your time. Recommended Videos We also have guides to the best new movies to stream, the best movies on Netflix, the best movies on Hulu, and the best movies on Amazon Prime Video. They Cloned Tyrone (2023) An original sci-fi movie with a terrific cast that didn't get the eyeballs it deserved, They Cloned Tyrone follows three people tied together by circumstance who begin to uncover a sinister government conspiracy. The movie's premise — a man realizes that he's been cloned — is super stylish and the perfect combination of absurd and serious. They Cloned Tyrone is anchored by its three central performances and a particular reminder of how skilled Jamie Foxx and John Boyega both are when they have the right material. You can watch They Cloned Tyrone on Netflix. The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar (2023) Generally speaking, it's hard to describe anything that Wes Anderson directed as underrated. The writer/director is hugely popular among film fans, and his movies usually debut to critical acclaim. Unfortunately, The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar, as well as three other Roald Dahl short stories that he adapted for Netflix in 2023, did not receive the attention they deserve. This one tells the story of a billionaire who becomes enthralled by his desire to acquire a particular, rare skill and devotes his life to it. Henry Sugar is funny, moving, and among the most stylish things that Anderson has ever directed. Benedict Cumberbatch is the perfect centerpiece for this odd tale. You can watch The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar on Netflix. The Color Purple (2023) An adaptation of the Alice Walker novel and 1985 film of the same name, this version of The Color Purple is a musical and a fascinating improvement on the original. It follows Celie, an introverted housewife in the Deep South who overcomes an abusive husband and a decades-long separation from her sister to find the life that she wants. Featuring stylish musical numbers, great songs, and an enduring central story, The Color Purple also features several incredible performances, including ones from Taraji P. Henson and Danielle Brooks that deserved more attention. You can watch The Color Purple on Netflix.

Hulk Hogan's Daughter Tried to Stop Him From Marrying Wife Sky

Wrestling icon Hulk Hogan married Sky Daily less than two years before his death despite pleas from his only daughter, Brooke Hogan, to stop the marriage. "Sky was always very nice to me," Brooke, 37, shared during a conversation with Bubba the Love Sponge on Tuesday, August 5. "She's nice, and she's cool, and, you know, I don't really want to go into too much detail about our conversations, but he was saying, you know, 'She's pushing the marriage thing real hard.'" Brooke went on to recall how her late father previously told her he "was never getting married again," adding that it "wasn't a worry." "And I said, 'Well, Dad, you don't have to do what you don't have to do, you know,'" Brooke continued. Hulk reportedly confessed to his daughter that he was "trying to find a way out" of the marriage, to which Brooke offered from him to use her as an excuse. "'Well, if I broke up with her, it'd be really bad,'" Hulk said, according to Brooke. "And I said, 'What do you mean?' And he goes, 'I don't want to get into it, you know, whatever.'" According to Brooke, Hulk had concerns surrounding his future wife's ties to Scientology, despite claiming that she had left the church. "You need to be careful. If you want to date her, cool. Just don't get married," Brooke urged her father. "You don't have to. I was concerned about everything else too." Hulk and Sky, 47, ultimately tied the knot in a small ceremony in Clearwater, Florida, in September 2023. The former WWE superstar died of a heart attack at his home in Clearwater on July 24. At the time, Hogan was recovering from a "major four-level Anterior Cervical Discectomy and Fusion (ACDF)" he had undergone weeks earlier, Daily revealed. He was 71 years old.
