Terengganu deny claims of unpaid salary by Ivan

The Star05-05-2025

PETALING JAYA: Terengganu have firmly denied allegation that the club had failed to pay striker Ivan Mamut's salary for nearly nine months, calling the claims baseless and misleading.
The Croatian striker claimed that he is owed more than nine months' salary but refrained from launching into a tirade against the club's management though he was frustrated with the situation.
If no resolution was found soon, Mamut said he was prepared to bring up the matter to FIFA.
However, Terengganu have clarified that the accusation did not originate from any official source and warned that legal action could be taken against individuals or platforms spreading false information.
"These claims are not only inaccurate but also damaging to the club's reputation," said Terennganu FC in a statement.
"We will not hesitate to pursue legal action against those responsible for publishing or disseminating such unfounded accusations."
According to the club, Mamut had signed a contract extension with Terengganu for the 2024-2025 season in December 2023.
However, in March 2024, the Croatian forward suffered a serious Achilles tendon injury, ruling him out of action indefinitely.
Terengganu stated that the club initially supported Mamut's recovery efforts between April and May 2024.
However, the player insisted on continuing his rehabilitation in Croatia, citing better facilities and comfort.
Both parties agreed to this arrangement under mutually accepted terms.
Upon completing rehabilitation abroad, Terengganu's medical team assessed that there was no significant improvement in Mamut's condition.
In July 2024, Mamut requested permission to return to Croatia again, this time for surgery and further recovery until December.
Once more, the club approved the request based on agreed conditions.
"Mamut reported back to Terengganu in January 2025 in hopes of returning to full training and playing a role in the remainder of the season.
"However, the club found that he was not physically ready to rejoin competitive action. As a result, Mamut did not feature in any official matches during the 2024/2025 Malaysian League season.
"Terengganu have always prioritised the welfare of their players and maintained open communication to find the best solutions for both parties," the club added.
The management emphasised that any unresolved issues, including financial matters, should be handled through the appropriate contractual channels and addressed professionally.
"Terengganu urge the public and media not to sensationalise this issue as it can mislead fans and negatively affect the image of the club and Malaysian football as a whole."

[UPDATED] IGP: Police probing rapper's ganja bust in Laos for syndicate links

KUALA LUMPUR: Police are investigating if a Malaysian rapper and two others caught in Laos with over 100 packets of ganja recently are working with a drug syndicate or if they were hired as drug mules. Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Razarudin Husain said the Bukit Aman Narcotic Crime Investigation Department would liase with its counterparts in Laos for further information. "They are looking into all possibilities, including if these three were part of a drug trafficking syndicate or if they were hired as drug mules. "The NCID is in the midst of gathering further details into this case. They will be liasing with their counterparts in Laos as well as other agencies in the region," he said when contacted today. Razarudin said the 29-year-old rapper and his two associates, aged 25 and 29, all hailed from Johor Baru and did not have a record of prior offences. "Based on the intelligence in hand, the three had planned to board a Thai Airways flight from Laos to Germany to deliver the drugs there. "Checks with our counterparts in Thailand have so far revealed that the three had not entered Thailand recently," he said, adding that these checks were conducted to determine if the suspects were involved with a syndicate in Thailand. Razarudin said NCID would obtain further information from their counterparts in Laos based on the interogation of the three suspects. "The three are being held at the Phontong Prison at Vientiane, Laos," he said. Yesterday, Bukit Aman confirmed the arrest of three Malaysians, including a rapper, by Lao authorities over an attempt to smuggle 103 packets of cannabis. The suspects were detained on May 27 at Wattay International Airport with more than 100 packets of marijuana after they arrived from Malaysia via a Thai Airways flight.

With Kane's curse broken, Bayern eye Club World Cup treasures

BERLIN: Fresh from lifting a first team title of his career, Harry Kane and Bayern Munich head to the Club World Cup in the United States eyeing more than just another shot at silverware. Long on the receiving end of jibes about not winning a team trophy in his 15-year career despite a glittering array of individual honours, the 31-year-old striker finally broke through when Bayern won the Bundesliga this season. Besides adding another title to Bayern's bulging trophy cabinet, a Club World Cup win would be incredibly lucrative for the German giants. In a bid to boost club buy-in for the expanded tournament, FIFA has put together a whopping $1 billion prize money pool, with the winner expected to pocket $125 million. As with most of the big European sides competing in the tournament, Bayern have been handed a relatively simple task in the group stages. Bayern face Auckland City in Cincinnati on Sunday, before rounding out the group stage with matches against Boca Juniors in Miami and Benfica in Charlotte. Member-run Bayern may dwarf all but a handful of European rivals financially, but the Club World Cup money could make an important difference at an uncertain time. Despite winning back the Bundesliga title this season after Bayer Leverkusen broke an 11-year Bavarian streak last term, Bayern are facing a rebuild this summer. Normally the one and only destination for top German talent, in-demand midfielder Florian Wirtz spurned their advances and looks set for a move to Premier League side Liverpool. With veteran Thomas Mueller leaving after the Club World Cup and wingers Leroy Sane and Kingsley Coman also reportedly headed for the exit, Bayern will need to bring in more attacking talent this transfer window. In defence, Eric Dier has left while Kim Min-jae, Dayot Upamecano and Hiroki Ito have all nursed long-term injury complaints of late. The free-agent signings of Germany duo Jonathan Tah, a centre-back, and midfielder Tom Bischof have however helped tackle two problem areas for the German giants – and at a fraction of the cost. Both players were released early by former clubs Leverkusen and Hoffenheim respectively, with Bayern paying nominal fees to allow them to make the trip to the US. After recently scoring two goals in two games for England against Andorra and Senegal, Kane heads to the US optimistic of a further taste of silverware. "We're certainly one of the favourites. I think this season has shown what kind of a team we are," Kane told Germany's TZ newspaper on Wednesday. "On a good day, we can beat any opponent in the world." Kane said the players were "taking the tournament seriously and preparing well", despite the long season behind them. "It's a new format with the best teams in the world competing. I'm happy to be part of it because it's an exciting opportunity." While Kane may now have just a solitary team title, his strike partner Mueller is bidding to become the most decorated German footballer ever. Mueller is equal on 34 team trophies with retired Real Madrid midfielder Toni Kroos, but can inch past his former team-mate by lifting what would be his third Club World Cup. The veteran's two previous victories, in 2014 and 2021, came in the previous scaled back version of the competition. Mueller, 35, made clear he wanted to stay at Bayern after 25 years with the club. In April, he said the decision to part ways was made by the club and the club alone, but has not allowed the issue to spoil his farewell. In a social media video as Bayern took off for the United States, Mueller said: "Of course we want to win this thing. Tang Jie-Ee Wei take cues from Dechapol's mental game

KUALA LUMPUR: Thai mixed doubles ace Dechapol Puavaranukroh may be Chen Tang Jie-Toh Ee Wei's biggest obstacle, but the Malaysian pair also see him as a major source of inspiration on their comeback trail. World No. 4 Tang Jie-Ee Wei, who recently reunited after a brief split, lost to Dechapol-Supissara Paewsampran in the semi-finals of the Indonesia Open last week. The Thai world No. 5 now lead their head-to-head record 3-1. Despite the defeat, Ee Wei admitted there's much to admire about Dechapol, the 2021 world champion with former partner Sapsiree Taerattanachai. "Dechapol has a wealth of experience and is very strong mentally. He knows how to stay calm and push at the right time during crucial moments," said Ee Wei after training at the Academy Badminton Malaysia (ABM) in Bukit Kiara on Friday. "That's something we need to learn - how to manage pressure the way he and Supissara do." Dechapol-Supissara have claimed five World Tour titles in just seven months as a pair. They've also beaten Malaysia's top mixed pairs: holding a 5-3 record over world No. 6 Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Lai and winning their only meeting against world No. 13 Tan Kian Meng-Lai Pei Jing at last year's Kumamoto Masters. Recalling last week's loss, Ee Wei said: "We had chances to beat them, but they made the right decisions and took the match (18-21, 21-15, 21-11)." Still, the Malaysian pair are seeing steady progress. "We didn't do well at the Singapore Open but made the semis in Indonesia," she added. "We really wanted to win there, but our form isn't quite there yet. That said, our communication and combination are improving." Tang Jie-Ee Wei went their separate ways following the All England in March due to personal differences, but decided to reunite soon after. Their comeback began with a second-round exit at the Singapore Open.
