Online fraud surge: Terengganu police warn of rising scams after RM17.9m in losses in first half of 2025
KUALA TERENGGANU, July 22 — Terengganu police recorded 940 cases of online fraud involving losses amounting to RM17.9 million from January to June this year. State police chief Datuk Mohd Khairi Khairuddin said the highest losses were from phone scams, which accounted for RM7.68 million, followed by non-existent investment schemes (RM5.47 million), online purchase frauds (RM1.95 million), and parcel scams (RM1.57 million). 'There were also cases of cybercrime or money siphoned out from accounts (RM501,583.34), loan scams (RM470,907.91), love scams (RM260,200), and Ah Long (illegal moneylender) frauds totalling RM2,960,' he said after the handover ceremony of case items by the Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department at the Terengganu Police Contingent Headquarters (IPK) today. Mohd Khairi also revealed that the most recent case involved a former employee of an oil exploration company who lost RM892,000 to a phone scam syndicate. He said on Dec 31 last year, the 56-year-old male victim was contacted by suspects posing as a representative of the online sales platform Shopee and a police officer from the Penang IPK, alleging that he was involved in money laundering and drug trafficking. 'Panicked by the accusation, the victim made 10 transactions to seven different accounts between Jan 7 and Feb 10, using his retirement savings and Employees Provident Fund to 'clear' his name,' said Mohd Khairi, adding that the victim lodged a report yesterday. He urged the public to remain vigilant against fraud syndicate tactics that target victims regardless of age or social background. — Bernama

Fewer imports, bigger dream
Still part of the plan: Uzbekistan midfielder Nurillo Tukhtasinov (centre) has been retained by Terengganu for the Super League next season. — Terengganu FC PETALING JAYA: Terengganu may be cutting down on foreign firepower, but they are aiming for bigger things in the new Super League season. The Turtles, who had nine import players last season, have trimmed the number to six. Coach Badrul Afzan Razali says the move reflects the club's commitment to building a balanced team, with a stronger emphasis on quality over quantity and greater reliance on local talent. 'Last season we had nine imports, but this year we are moving forward with only six. I'm hoping the current group can deliver improved performances and contribute more meaningfully to the team,' said Badrul. They have retained Uzbekistan midfielder Nurillo Tukhtasinov and signed four new players – Brazilian playmakers Gabriel Silva and Rainderson da Costa, French striker Yan Mabella and Cameroonian winger Junior Ngong Sam. The sixth player is believed to be Brazilian centreback Diego Landis, who will join them from Thai club Khon Kaen United. The 27-year-old Landis, who stands tall at 1.95m, hails from the famed Brazilian club academy Sao Paulo and will be a welcome addition to the Terengganu defence, which is powered by local talents. Badrul admitted that several imports failed to meet their marks last season, and this is the reason to source for new faces. 'Some of our imports last year failed to live up to expectations. That's why I expect the new ones to step up and perform at a higher level,' he added. While foreign players remain a vital part of the club's strategy, Badrul underlined his confidence in local players, pledging to provide them with opportunities to prove themselves. 'Our local players cannot be overlooked. I will continue to place my trust in them to help drive the team's success.' Terengganu will begin the season without star winger Safawi Rasid, whose departure leaves a noticeable gap in the squad. However, Badrul believes Akhyar Rashid, who remains with the team, has the potential to fill the void and take on a greater role. 'Losing Safawi is a loss for the team, but we are now looking to Akhyar and others to rise to the occasion. I am confident they will deliver.' Terengganu will take on Penang at the City Stadium in Georgetown on Aug 10. The season will begin with the Charity Shield game between Johor Darul Ta'zim and Selangor in Johor on Aug 8.

Ex-military, police officers to serve as wardens at 2 Mara colleges
Mara chairman Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki said the appointment of retired military and police personnel as wardens does not mean they will use harsh disciplinary methods. (Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : Majlis Amanah Rakyat (Mara) has appointed retired military and police officers as hostel wardens for two Mara Junior Science Colleges (MRSMs) under a pilot initiative starting next month. Mara chairman Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki said the two colleges are MRSM Besut in Terengganu and MRSM Balik Pulau in Penang, with the appointment of not more than 10 male and female wardens, Bernama reported. 'We have conducted a series of interviews and we've shortlisted candidates. God willing, they will begin their duties in August. 'The standard operating procedures have also been provided and we will continue with the training,' he told reporters after opening the Bukit Gantan Umno meeting today. In April, Asyraf announced Mara's plan to appoint hostel wardens from among former police and military personnel for selected MRSMs to curb bullying. He said Mara would monitor the six-month trial period to evaluate the pros and cons of the initiative. Asyraf said today the appointment of wardens from among retired military and police personnel did not mean they would use harsh disciplinary methods. 'We are starting this initiative with clear SOPs and strong foundational guidelines so that our children receive proper supervision and attention for their development in a safe hostel environment. 'We want to reassure parents that we do not compromise when it comes to bullying, be it physical or mental,' he said. FMT previously quoted criminologist Shahul Hamid Abd Rahim as urging Mara not to grant full authority to former military and police officers appointed as hostel wardens at MRSMs. Shahul Hamid said proper supervision and clear SOPs were needed to manage students, not harsh methods, commonly used in training security forces. He said there was a real concern that these former officers might rely on a forceful approach towards students. Last month, six students from MRSM Besut were expelled for bullying a 14-year-old student. In April, seven students from an MRSM campus in Penang faced expulsion after a video showing the bullying of a fellow male student went viral.

Three new durian varieties set to debut in next two years… all thanks to Mardi
KUALA KANGSAR, July 19 —The Malaysian Agricultural Research and Development Institute (Mardi) is set to introduce three new durian varieties within the next two years. Mardi director-general Datuk Dr Mohamad Zabawi Abdul Ghani said the institute is currently evaluating several promising hybrid durians that could lead to new clones. 'We're assessing their suitability for planting in different locations. Apart from Mardi Kuala Kangsar, we're also developing hybrids at Mardi Jerangau in Terengganu. 'The names and codes are still being finalised and will be announced at the official launch,' he told reporters after the Duriotourism programme with the media at Mardi Kuala Kangsar today. Meanwhile, Mohamad Zabawi said the hybrid MRDI Super 88 (MS88) variety will be rebranded with a more appealing name. He added that 13,000 MS88 durian trees have been planted nationwide under Mardi's full supervision. 'Some trees are now between two and three years old, so in the next five to six years, they should be ready for wider commercial distribution,' he said. — Bernama
