Online fraud surge: Terengganu police warn of rising scams after RM17.9m in losses in first half of 2025
State police chief Datuk Mohd Khairi Khairuddin said the highest losses were from phone scams, which accounted for RM7.68 million, followed by non-existent investment schemes (RM5.47 million), online purchase frauds (RM1.95 million), and parcel scams (RM1.57 million).
'There were also cases of cybercrime or money siphoned out from accounts (RM501,583.34), loan scams (RM470,907.91), love scams (RM260,200), and Ah Long (illegal moneylender) frauds totalling RM2,960,' he said after the handover ceremony of case items by the Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department at the Terengganu Police Contingent Headquarters (IPK) today.
Mohd Khairi also revealed that the most recent case involved a former employee of an oil exploration company who lost RM892,000 to a phone scam syndicate.
He said on Dec 31 last year, the 56-year-old male victim was contacted by suspects posing as a representative of the online sales platform Shopee and a police officer from the Penang IPK, alleging that he was involved in money laundering and drug trafficking.
'Panicked by the accusation, the victim made 10 transactions to seven different accounts between Jan 7 and Feb 10, using his retirement savings and Employees Provident Fund to 'clear' his name,' said Mohd Khairi, adding that the victim lodged a report yesterday.
He urged the public to remain vigilant against fraud syndicate tactics that target victims regardless of age or social background. — Bernama

No documents to justify SRC unit's RM19.5mil transfer to Umno, court told
SRC International's lawyer, Razlan Hadri Zulkifli, told the Kuala Lumpur High Court that Jendela Pinggiran Sdn Bhd's purpose was to 'purely collect money and transfer it out'. KUALA LUMPUR : The High Court heard today that SRC International Sdn Bhd's subsidiary, Jendela Pinggiran Sdn Bhd (JPSB), was a dormant company with only RM500 in its bank account before it received RM43.96 million from its parent company, with no documentation to justify the transfer. SRC International's lawyer, Razlan Hadri Zulkifli, told the court the former directors of JPSB had committed a breach of fiduciary duty following the lack of documents concerning the transfer. 'There were no resolutions, notes, internal memoranda, or even WhatsApp messages … nothing at all related to JPSB. 'JPSB had an opening balance of RM500 in April 2015. That remained the case until July 2015, when SRC International suddenly transferred RM43.96 million into JPSB's bank account. 'Not only were there no documents justifying the amount, obviously there were no documents justifying the RM19.5 million (transferred) to the defendants (Umno),' he said. Razlan was submitting in a suit filed by SRC International and its subsidiaries, JPSB and Gandingan Mentari Sdn Bhd, against the Umno headquarters and its Selangor chapter to recover RM19.5 million in funds, including RM3.5 million transferred to Selangor Umno. He said that after July 2015, JPSB returned to its 'natural state, very quiet, sitting there with a minimal sum of money in its bank account'. Razlan said there had been no documentation because JPSB's purpose was to 'purely collect money and transfer it out'. The plaintiffs claim that the defendants had dishonestly and knowingly received the funds from JPSB. Umno's lawyer, Shahrul Fazli Kamarulzaman, denied the claim, suggesting that JPSB was a special vehicle with a dedicated account to run corporate social responsibility activities, accept funds for CSR, and disburse them to third parties. He said the earlier examination of former JPSB director Suboh Yassin showed that there were documents available pertaining to the company's activities. 'PW-2 (Suboh Yassin) said there are other documents available outside the bundle, possibly with the authorities or in the plaintiff's office,' he said. The hearing before Justice Raja Ahmad Mohzanuddin Shah Raja Mohzan continues on July 30.

20 children, including 15-day-old baby, rescued from unlicensed centre

(Facebook pic) PETALING JAYA : Twenty children, including a 15-day-old baby girl, were rescued from a warehouse and a house operating as an unregistered learning centre in Bukit Mertajam, Penang, last week. Penang social development and welfare committee chairman Lim Siew Khim said the rescue operation was carried out by the social welfare department (JKM) with the cooperation of the police, following public complaints. 'Those rescued were aged between 15 days and 16 years, comprising 10 boys and 10 girls. 'Initial investigations revealed that 12 children, including the baby, did not have birth certificates. 'Six had valid documents but no parents or guardians, while two have since been placed in the care of close family members,' Lim told a press conference in George Town today. She was quoted by Kosmo as saying a 20-year-old woman, believed to be the biological mother of the baby, was also 'rescued' during the operation. All those rescued are believed to be of various nationalities and primarily spoke Mandarin, with limited proficiency in Malay. Lim said the children are believed to have been deprived of basic necessities, including adequate food, clothing and safe shelter. 'The warehouse was in a filthy condition and completely unsuitable for habitation, especially by children. 'It was neither a care home nor a registered learning centre. Children should not have been there,' she said. During the raid, five adults believed to be acting as caretakers were also found on the premises. They were local individuals, aged over 18, and are currently being investigated by the police. 'Health screenings have also been conducted at Seberang Jaya Hospital with the involvement of JKM psychological officers,' Lim said, adding that a temporary custody order for the children had been granted by the court. Lim said her office had received several public complaints since the end of last year about the centre. However, earlier inspections at the address found no children present.

Army sergeant remanded for suspected sexual assault on girl, aged 5
A source said the suspect was arrested yesterday after the victim complained to her mother on July 9. PETALING JAYA : Police have remanded an army sergeant in Alor Gajah, Melaka, for five days on suspicion of sexually assaulting a five-year-old girl in January. Magistrate Teoh Shu Yee allowed the remand of the 32-year-old suspect from today to July 29 for police to complete their investigation under Section 14(a) of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017, Harian Metro reported. The daily quoted a source as saying the suspect was arrested yesterday after the victim complained to her mother on July 9. 'The victim alleged that she was assaulted one evening in January in their neighbourhood when she was walking home from kindergarten. 'She said the suspect, who is known to her parents, approached her and took her around the neighbourhood in his car,' said the source. The source said this happened frequently, with the suspect luring her into his car with ice cream.
