Mets' Francisco Alvarez, Francisco Lindor deliver in dramatic 10-inning win over Dodgers

Yahoo2 days ago

LOS ANGELES — Francisco Alvarez did not waste any time moving the Mets back out in front.
After the Dodgers had erased a two-run Mets advantage with runs in the seventh and ninth innings, the Mets catcher belted a go-ahead RBI double over the head of Teoscar Hernandez in right field in the 10th inning.

Alvarez's second hit of the game — this one off the Dodgers' Tanner Scott — moved the Mets back in front and helped them tear off two runs in the 10th inning of their 4-3 victory over the Dodgers in front of 48,556 fans on Monday night at Dodger Stadium.
"I feel like he's been taking a lot better swings as of late," Carlos Mendoza said. "The past few games, I feel like he's getting on time, he's got some rhythm, he's recognizing pitches a lot better. I think he's making progress and it was good to see him obviously coming through right there against a pretty good closer in Scott with a runner on second base, not only going the other way but driving the ball with authority."
Alvarez delivered the go-ahead hit and then scored on an RBI single by Francisco Lindor down the third-base line.
It was Alvarez's first RBI since May 4 against the Cardinals. He also finished 2-for-4 for his first multi-hit game in exactly two weeks.

"(My swing) feels good," Alvarez said. "It's something that we continue to work at day in and day out and just continue working at it."
Lindor finished 2-for-5 with two RBI, including his sixth leadoff home run of the season off Dustin May to begin the game.
New York Mets shortstop Francisco Lindor (12) celebrates with New York Mets outfielder Brandon Nimmo (9) during the first inning against the Los Angeles Dodgers during the first inning on June 2, 2025, at Dodger Stadium.
"I'm just trying to get a good pitch and get on base for the guys," Lindor said. "When they go out, great. When they don't, as long as I'm on base and get something going for the guys and let the big boys do their thing. I take a lot of pride in setting the tone."
The Mets are now 3-1 against the Dodgers this season, exorcising some demons from last season's National League Championship Series loss. The Mets' pitching staff has limited the Dodgers to six combined runs in those three wins.

On this day, however, it was the offensive resolve that put the Mets over the top after the Mets bullpen could not sustain Paul Blackburn's five scoreless innings in his return.
Lindor's 10th-inning RBI proved to be the difference as the Dodgers tacked on one run against Jose Castillo in the bottom half of the inning on an RBI single by Andy Pages. Castillo struck out Max Muncy and then Jose Butto recorded the fourth save of his career, getting pinch-hitter Will Smith to fly out to center field and Tommy Edman to ground out to the mound.

The Mets offense's 10th inning surge helped turn Edwin Diaz's blown save into his third victory of the season. In the bottom of the ninth inning, the Mets closer gave up a leadoff single to Tommy Edman and an infield single to Hyseong Kim on a diving stop by Lindor.

With runners on the corners, Shohei Ohtani lofted a sacrifice fly to the warning track in the left field corner. Diaz escaped a potential loss when he struck out Hernandez with Kim on second base. It was Diaz's first blown save in 14 chances.
The Mets offense responded in the next half inning.
"The fight, the resilience, the grit. They're grinding. It's a group that continues to fight," Mendoza said. "We went through a lot of adversity and every team is going to go through adversity. I feel like we're playing well now, but we've got a long ways to go. This group has been tested before."
Ohtani had managed to bounce back from some early struggles after he went 0-for-3 with two strikeouts in his first three plate appearances. Ohtani belted a solo home run off Max Kranick in the seventh inning that cut the Mets' advantage to 2-1.

Blackburn had been strong in his return from a knee injury, allowing only three hits and one walk in five innings on 77 pitches.

Shohei Ohtani thought he was 'in trouble' before Dave Roberts gifted him a toy Porsche

Dodgers designated hitter Shohei Ohtani cringes toward coach Chris Woodward after getting a hit on May 18 at Dodger Stadium. Ex-GM's Yankees-Mets Trade Idea Would Send All-Star Batting Champion To Bronx

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. The New York Yankees currently have DJ LeMahieu and Jorbit Vivas at second base. With Jazz Chisholm Jr. back in the hot corner, the Yankees may want an upgrade next to Anthony Volpe. LeMahieu is not the same player he once was, and his health is hardly reliable. The Yankees look like World Series contenders again, but may need to find an upgrade up the middle of their infield to reach the World Series again. Former New York Mets general manager Zack Scott suggested Jeff McNeil could be a target for the Yankees. "The Mets have some surplus," Scott said on "Baseball Night in New York." "Maybe Jeff McNeil would be a great fit for the Yankees." NEW YORK, NEW YORK - JUNE 28: Jeff McNeil #1 of the New York Mets reacts after hitting a three-run home run in the sixth inning against the Houston Astros at Citi Field on June 28, 2024 in the Queens borough of New York City. MoreThe Mets suddenly have Luisangel Acuña, Brett Baty and Ronny Mauricio as options to play if they trade McNeil. McNeil has split time between the outfield and second base. McNeil signed a four-year, $50 million deal before the 2023 season. He was coming off a season in which he won the National League batting title with a .326 average. He has not been able to maintain that type of production, but he would be an upgrade over the Yankees' current options. He is slashing .247/.349/.461 with three home runs after missing a month of the season. If the Mets are comfortable with Acuña as an everyday player, in either the outfield or at second base, they could move on from McNeil. The Mets may have reservations about trading McNeil to the Yankees, but it may help them get an expensive player off the books and make way for some young players to get more playing time. McNeil is a two-time All-Star and would help the Yankees try to reach the World Series again. More MLB: Paul Skenes to Red Sox? Insane Trade Thought Pushed by MLB Network Host
