Bezos and Sanchez to exchange wedding vows in star-studded Venice party
VENICE, June 27 (Reuters) - Amazon (AMZN.O), opens new tab founder Jeff Bezos and journalist Lauren Sanchez were set to exchange marriage vows at a ceremony in Venice on Friday, part of a three-day wedding extravaganza that has attracted dozens of celebrity guests but also protests by local activists.
Bezos, 61, and Sanchez, 55, will exchange rings on the small island of San Giorgio, opposite St Mark's Square, accompanied by singing from Matteo Bocelli, son of the famous Italian pop-opera tenor Andrea Bocelli.
The ceremony will have no legal status under Italian law, a senior city hall official told Reuters, suggesting that the couple may have already legally wed in the United States, avoiding the bureaucracy associated with an Italian marriage.
The festivities, estimated to cost around $50 million, culminate on Saturday with a party in a former medieval shipyard where Lady Gaga and Elton John are reportedly set to perform.
Bill Gates, Orlando Bloom, Tom Brady, the queen of Jordan, Oprah Winfrey, Kris Jenner and Kim and Khloe Kardashian as well as Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner and Domenico Dolce from Dolce & Gabbana are among the 200-250 guests.
Amid tight security, there have been glimpses of the celebrities moving around town, the women in summer dresses and high heels stepping somewhat gingerly off boats ferrying them around the city's canals.
Celebrations began on Thursday evening in the cloisters of Madonna dell'Orto, a medieval church in the central district of Cannaregio that hosts masterpieces by 16th-century painter Tintoretto.
"This magical place has gifted us unforgettable memories," the bride and groom said on their wedding invitation, in which they asked for "no gifts" and pledged charity donations for three Venetian institutions.
Their donations are worth 3 million euros ($3.5 million).
Businesses have welcomed the glitz and glamour but it is being resisted by a local protest movement whose members resent what they see as Venice being gift-wrapped for ultra-rich outsiders. Bezos is No. 4 on Forbes' billionaires list.
Giulia Cacopardo, a 28-year-old representative of the "No Space for Bezos" movement, complained that the needs of ordinary people were being neglected in a city that is a tourist magnet and fast depopulating largely due to the soaring cost of living. Venice's city centre has less than 50,000 residents, compared to almost 100,000 in the late 1970s.
"When you empty a city of its inhabitants, you can turn it into a stage for big events," Cacopardo told Reuters. "(But) the money that Bezos spends on this wedding does not end up in the pockets of Venetians. The owners of luxury hotels are not Venetians."
Cacopardo was one of 30-40 activists who staged a protest in St Mark's Square on Thursday, chanting "We are the 99%" as a masked couple posed as bride and groom and one man climbed a pole to unfurl a banner reading "The 1% ruins the world".
Police intervened, forcibly removing the protesters.
The anti-Bezos front is planning a march on Saturday, and their activities have already led authorities to step up security and move the location of Saturday's party to a more secluded part of Venice, the Arsenale former shipyard.
But politicians, hoteliers and other Venice residents are happy about the wedding, saying that such events do more to support the local economy than the multitudes of day-trippers who normally overrun the city.
"We are happy and honoured to welcome Jeff Bezos and his consort Lauren Sanchez," said Mayor Luigi Brugnaro, who sent white roses to the bride and a maxi-bottle of Amarone luxury red wine to the groom.
Italy's Tourism Ministry said it carried out a study estimating at 957 million euros ($1.12 billion) the overall economic impact of the wedding, including an 896 million euro benefit from "media visibility", and the rest coming from direct or indirect spending related to the event.
Bezos, Amazon's executive chair, got engaged to Sanchez in 2023, four years after the collapse of his 25-year marriage to MacKenzie Scott.

Even Anna Wintour can only be in one place at a time. And rather than Paris, where Jonathan Anderson made his Dior debut on Friday, the most powerful person in fashion was in Venice for the Bezos/Sánchez wedding shortly after relinquishing her role as editor-in-chief at American Vogue. And unlike the wedding of the year, Anderson's show proved to be sweet relief for anyone wanting to flex a cooler, chicer muscle. Perched on wooden cubes within the Cour du Dôme Des Invalides sat plenty of VIP clout: Daniel Craig, Donatella Versace and Roger Federer. Most of the Arnault family, who own Dior and routinely joust with Jeff Bezos over who has more money, were present. Even Rihanna, pregnant in a Dior pastel waistcoat, was relatively punctual. Anderson is known for his sharp eye and crafty, mercurial taste – few people have shaped the red carpet and ultimately the high street into the hype machine it is today. But Dior is a different challenge. As the first creative director of menswear and womenswear since Christian Dior himself, the designer needs to revamp LVMH's second biggest brand, with estimated revenues far greater than his former label, Loewe. 'I can't stand here and say I'm not nervous, that it is not petrifying', he said backstage before the show, wearing his trademark Levi's and a plaid Dior shirt. 'Dior is on billboards. It's on Rihanna. It's transcendent. But this is the starting point – I've been here four months, and the first five shows will show different aspects. Some will contradict; others will be completely radical.' Some designers get critical acclaim; others sell a lot of clothes – a rare few have a talent to do both, but that's the hope with Anderson. Because of tariff wars, and a decline in the luxury market, LVMH shares have halved from their 2023 peak. 'Delphine [Arnault] and I, we talked about changing the quality, about upping the game,' Anderson said. Opening the show was a bar jacket designed in Donegal tweed, from Ireland. More interested in how a look is put together than the clothes themselves, he styled it with a pair of thick cream cargo shorts cut from 15 metres of fabric and layered up like a Viennetta. Knitted vests were a through line, as were ties and neck ruffles, and plenty of colour – greens and pinks and blues. Dior, he says, is a house of colour, in part because it offsets the 'house grey' that featured on billboards, Dior clothes labels he redesigned and the Parisian sky. A puffer gilet was circularly cut and placed over a formal shirt, while summer coats and capes came knitted or in pleated bright colours. One was even based on an original Dior shape, 'that would have cost the equivalent of a Ferrari', except here it was styled with trainers. There were even jeans – skinny and baggy, in indigo and green. The look was preppy and eccentric, with shades of Loewe, JW Anderson and even in the puffers, Uniqlo, among the classic Dior shapes. On Anderson's original moodboard were Warholian images of Basquiat and the socialite Lee Radziwill, alongside classic Dior dresses, such as the Delft and Cigale dresses. The idea was to take each look into the present, 'to recontextualise it'. He even took his predecessor Maria Grazia Chiuri's book bag totes and put a 'new skin' on them, in the form of Dracula and Les Liaisons Dangereuses. It's these hyperspecific references that give Anderson's work a pleasing temporality, and will no doubt sell well – here at Dior, and whatever high street shop will no doubt copy him. Royals, statesmen and Hollywood glitterati have gathered together in Venice for the Bezos-Sanchez nuptials as one of the world's great cities of love plays host to an event like no other. Lauren looked stunning as she was whisked by speedboat to San Giorgio Maggiore, which overlooks a Venice lagoon, to walk down the aisle in front of 200 VIP guests. She wore a classic white suit and headscarf to land on the island where she changed into her handmade, one of a kind Dolce & Gabbana gown. Amid local protests, the globe's richest and most powerful people have descended on La Serenissima, the Most Serene Republic of Venice, to pay homage to the Amazon billionaire and his blushing 55-year-old bride.
