USWNT to take on Ireland in two June friendlies

Reuters24-03-2025
March 24 - The United States women's national team has scheduled a pair of friendly matches in June against the Republic of Ireland.
The teams will meet in Commerce City, Colo., on June 26 and in Cincinnati on June 29, the U.S. Soccer Federation announced Monday.
The USWNT will also play a third match on July 2, with an opponent and location to be determined.
The U.S. and Ireland last met in April 2023 when the Americans swept a pair of matches in Austin, Texas, and St. Louis ahead of the FIFA Women's World Cup where both teams were participants.
"Ireland is one of the most difficult European teams to play against, so I'm happy we could get these games," said U.S. head coach Emma Hayes. "We need to play teams that will push us and create an environment where our players have to solve problems and play under pressure.
"We're still early in our process of building towards World Cup qualifying for '27 and we still have a lot of growth to go as a team and as individuals, so these summer matches at these great soccer venues will once again provide a platform for the players to show their abilities to excel at a high level."
The June 26 game in Colorado at DICK's Sporting Goods Park is scheduled for a 9 p.m. ET start. The June 29 match at Cincinnati's TQL Stadium is slated for 3 p.m. ET.
The U.S. has won all 15 previous meetings against Ireland.

Arsenal handed fresh Rodrygo boost as Real Madrid slash asking price

Real Madrid will slash their asking price for Arsenal target Rodrygo in the final weeks of the summer transfer window. The Brazil international's future came under intense scrutiny during the latter stages of last season. While reports have suggested the winger is open to staying at the club, his lack of game time has fuelled talk Real could cash in before the end of the month. Rodrygo started just one of Real's six matches at the Club World Cup, managing a combined total of 92 minutes across the entire competition. Los Blancos opened their La Liga campaign with a 1-0 win over Osasuna on Tuesday night with the winger again an unused substitute. Metro's new weekly football newsletter: In The Mixer. Exclusive analysis, FPL tips and transfer talk sent straight to your inbox every Friday – sign up, it's an open goal. Explaining Rodrygo's latest absence, Xabi Alonso said: 'Nothing's happening. The World Cup was a different context because of the competition. Today it's just a game. 'What counts is this season. I'm counting on him; there's no need to read too far into the future. If he's still the same in three months, I'll be able to answer.' Arsenal are huge admirers of Rodrygo and reached out to his representatives in June to discuss a possible move. The Gunners have since signed Noni Madueke and Viktor Gyokeres in attack but still want to sign a left winger. Mikel Arteta's side also look set to miss out on Eberechi Eze, who is now close to sealing a move to their north London rivals Tottenham. Real are asking for €100million (£86m) for the 24-year-old with no formal offers put forward at this stage. But Spanish football expert Guillem Balague reports the club could settle for a smaller fee towards the end of the summer transfer window. That fee could be as little as €60m to €70m (£51m to £60m) – a relative bargain for a player who has been key to Real's recent successes. Manchester City have also been among the sides interested in signing the Brazilian this summer as a possible replacement for Savinho. The 21-year-old only arrived in Manchester but has been the subject of interest from Tottenham. City however are determined to keep the youngster, effectively ending their interest in his countryman Rodrygo. Crystal Palace turn to Arsenal target if Liverpool land Marc Guehi

Crystal Palace are planning for a world without Marc Guehi and that could involve signing Arsenal-linked defender Jeremy Jacquet. Guehi is into the final year of his contract at Selhurst Park and Eagles chairman Steve Parish has admitted that the club will have to cash in on him unless he signs a new deal. Liverpool have long been keen on the England international but there remains a difference in the valuation of the centre-back between the Reds and Palace. The Independent report that the Premier League champions are only willing to pay £35m for Guehi, while the Eagles want £45m for their captain. Either figure appears to be a good feal for the defender who only turned 25 last month and may well be a starter for England at next year's World Cup. Metro's new weekly football newsletter: In The Mixer. Exclusive analysis, FPL tips and transfer talk sent straight to your inbox every Friday – sign up, it's an open goal. The transfer stand-off looks set to continue and one or both clubs will have to budge to do a deal before deadline day on September 1. Palace are looking at other options if Guehi is to leave, though, and Rennes defender Jacquet is high on their shopping list. The 20-year-old has quickly become very well regarded after an impressive loan spell at Clermont saw him recalled to Rennes, where he held down a first team place in the second half of last season. He has still only made 12 appearances in Ligue 1, but the 6'2″ centre-back has caught the eye, with Arsenal reportedly interested in signing him this summer. Reports in France stated that the young defender turned down an approach from the Gunners, preferring to continue his development at Rennes. That could mean that a Crystal Palace pursuit of the Frenchman is going to be very tricky, although the Eagles will be able to offer the chance to play much more regularly than the Gunners. The Independent's report suggests Rennes would want around £35m for Jacquet, with Palace doing their best to receive more for Guehi than they would have to pay for the talented youngster. After their brilliant FA Cup win and subsequent Community Shield success, there is every chance Palace could lose both Guehi and Eberechi Eze before the end of the transfer window. After links with Arsenal, Eze now looks likely to join Tottenham in the coming days for around £60m in total. The Eagles have approached Leicester City over a deal for 21-year-old Bilal El Khannouss as a replacement for the England forward. More Trending Despite the seemingly likely departures of Guehi and Eze, manager Oliver Glasner has tried to dampen transfer talk and insist both are committed to the Palace cause. 'Ebs and Marc, there has been a lot of noise about these two players in the last week,' Glasner told Match of the Day after an opening weekend draw with Chelsea. 'Everyone could see the performances against Liverpool and today, they were 100 per cent aligned with this team and Crystal Palace. 'As long as they are 100 per cent committed, they will play as they are so good. I watched them all week in training, I spoke to them almost daily, maybe more than my kids and wife, but it's been worth it to talk to them. They didn't just show they are great footballers, but they are great people and that's what I expected.'
