George save sends Hearts crashing out of the cup
The 27-year-old goalkeeper, on loan from English side, Wycombe Wanderers, minutes later the Birkenhead-born stopper was receiving the congratulations of his St Mirren team-mates as his split-second decision sent Heart of Midlothian spinning out of the Premier Sports Cup.
The 25-year-old Portuguese crowd-pleaser picked the right side of the goal for Hearts' third spot kick of the shootout after skipper Lawrence Shankland and substitute, Stephen Kingsley, had netted.
Alan Forrest and Beni Baningime also scored but their penalties were in vain after Braga's failure. He was brave to step up and take one, but the showman, who arrived from Aalesunds FK in Norway failed to deceive George who previously made 67 appearances for Livingston.
The Jambos sailed through the group stages and were heavily fancied to go a distance in the first major competition of the Scottish football season, but they became the first big name to crash out as Richard King, Marcus Fraser, Jonah Ayunga, Evan Mooney and Malik Dijksteel all scored from the spot, a 100 per cent record.
Hearts dominated possession at Paisley, had more corners and more shots, but only scored once as the sides finished the 90 minutes level at 1-1. Alex Gogic volleyed St Mirren in front with his right foot after 34 minutes before a crowd of 4,738 in the SMISA Stadium, including a sold-out section of travelling fans.
He latched onto a Declan John cross to finish in style before saluting the fans, and it took until the 78th minute for Oisin McEntee to level after a corner by Harry Milne.
So, The Buddies move on to the quarter-final leaving Hearts to rue their poor marking in the penalty box which allowed Gogic the room to slam the ball past Zander Clark.
And Killian Phillips was denied by an acrobatic save from Clark as the home side pressed for a second.
Later, substitute Braga and Shankland forced George into action but, despite their possession, Hearts did not really test George enough during a bruising, physical battle in the Paisley sunshine.
Derek McInnes, Hearts' head coach, said Hearts lost because they did not take advantage of being in control and he conceded that he could have started the game with too many who are new to Scottish football.
He told BBC Scotland Sport: 'We've got to find more, we've got to find within ourselves, somebody to make that extra run, first contact, the confidence to go and take people on more, and just to try to force the game a wee bit.'
His counterpart, Stephen Robinson, said: 'A wee bit of luck at last in the cup and, hopefully, a decent draw.'
Well, St Mirren now travel to either Kilmarnock or Dundee United in the quarter-final. Partick Thistle entertain Celtic, Rangers host Livingston or Hibernian and Aberdeen are at home to Motherwell.
DISAPPOINTMENT: Lawrence Shankland who converted from the spot but Hearts were KO'd from the Premier Sports Cup on penalties

but record signing put in shade despite scoring

Supposedly vulnerable after their European exertions three days earlier, Hibs made a mockery of such suggestions by breezing past Livingston 2-0 at Almondvale to book a Premier Sports Cup quarter-final date with Rangers. This was a polished performance by the Easter Road outfit, who less than 72 hours beforehand had been locked in an almighty Conference League tussle with Partizan Belgrade that they eventually won after extra time. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Hibs head coach David Gray was clever with his squad rotation, making six changes to his team. They all contributed, with record signing Thibault Klidje showing why he cost the thick end of £1 million by opening the scoring on his first start and being a nuisance to the Livingston backline all afternoon. Thibault Klidje opened the scoring just before half time for Hibs. | SNS Group He was ably supported by another new arrival in Miguel Chaiwa. The 21-year-old only joined from Young Boys less than a fortnight ago but the rangy Zambian was this observer's man of the match, dominating the midfield. He was strong, disciplined, took good care of the ball, broke up attacks and drove forward whenever possible. It was a near-perfect debut. Hibs spent in the region of £600,000 for Chaiwa and have enjoyed shopping in the Alps this summer. Klidje was purchased from another Swiss club in Luzern, while Gray also handed a first competitive start to Austrian goalkeeper Raphael Sallinger, pinched from Hartburg in his homeland. He was assured, although not overly worked by a poor Livingston side. Their manager David Martindale, who agreed a new contract in the build-up to this game, will surely lament his team's largely listless performance. They never truly put Hibs under pressure, and almost every ball into the visiting penalty box was met by the dominating head of Scotland defender Grant Hanley. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Klidje is a reminder of Boyle With their Conference League play-off first leg against Legia Warsaw to come on Thursday, it was no surprise to see a host of regular Hibs starters left on the bench. Jordan Smith, Chris Cadden, Rocky Bushiri, Josh Mulligan and Kieron Bowie were used sparingly. Mulligan's late cameo was notable for Hibs' second goal, a cracking strike from distance that shot in via the post. It wasn't necessary, mind you. Only one goal was required. Some Hibs fans have questioned why Klidje, a Togo internationalist, has not been utilised more given the fee splashed out on him. He was a fascinating watch throughout. Small, stocky but speedy, he has some of the hallmarks of Martin Boyle, who partnered him in attack. Hibs clearly wanted to turn Livingston's less pacey defence and expose them. Their captain Ryan McGowan was booked early on for wiping Klidje out, before the striker himself was cautioned for an over-zealous shoulder charge. Hibs settled into the game nicely and thoroughly deserved their lead on 43 minutes. It was a simple goal, Boyle's inswinging corner met by Klidje's head and the ball skidded past Jerome Prior in the Livingston goal. Miguel Chaiwa made his Hibs debut. | SNS Group With Chaiwa and Alasana Manneh patrolling the Hibs midfield, Livingston could not find much joy. Both Junior Hoilett and Josh Campbell missed very presentable chances to put the game completely to bed earlier than Mulligan did with a sumptuous strike from outside the box on 87 minutes, his first in Hibs colours. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad A mention must go to young right wing-back Kanayo Megwa, who dominated his flank on a rare start. But for as good as he and his teammates were, Livi were toothless and could have played until sunset and probably not scored.

Skye Stout, 16, scores first goal for Kilmarnock as she silences trolls just days after horrific online abuse
Former footballers, sports stars and politicians had rallied around her SKYE'S THE LIMIT Skye Stout, 16, scores first goal for Kilmarnock as she silences trolls just days after horrific online abuse Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) THE world of football and beyond united in solidarity with Skye Stout a few days ago. The 16-year-old was subject to horrific online abuse after signing for Kilmarnock Women on Thursday - but now she's well and truly shut them up. Sign up for Scottish Sun newsletter Sign up 2 Skye Stout signed for Kilmarnock on Thursday and made her debut today Credit: Facebook 2 She went straight into the team to face St Johnstone - and repaid that faith in her Credit: KILMARNOCK FC The Ayrshire side made the decision to take down social media posts announcing her arrival at the club due to her being targeted with abuse over her appearance. Since then there has been a swell of support for the youngster, who has a skin condition. Football heroes such as Jamie Carragher, John Hartson and Ally McCoist posted messages on social media wishing her good luck in what is her first season in senior football. Former Scottish First Minister Humza Yousaf also commented, saying: "Skye Stout has just signed for Kilmarnock, at 16 she has already achieved more than her trolls ever will. "Imagine being a grown man abusing a 16-year-old? What a sad, pathetic, unhappy life these trolls have. "Well done Skye, many more good people are rooting for your success!" Now she has silenced the trolls in the best way possible by letting her football do the talking. During Kilmarnock Women's Scottish Women's Premier League 2 game today against St Johnstone, the midfielder stepped up and scored a stunning free-kick to make it 4-0 to her team in the first half. The team posted on X (Twitter): "37' | SKYE STOUT!! "Skye fires in a free-kick on the edge of the box! Ex-Kilmarnock & Morton star Alan Mahood quizzed about his OWN career on Cult Heroes "Kilmarnock 4-0 St Johnstone." Earlier on, she played the key pass to set up her team mate Cara Gray for the goal that made it 3-0. The match at Winton Park in Ardrossan finished 6-2 to Kilmarnock, with Skye playing the first 62 minutes before being substituted. Hundreds of fans filled the comments section with words of encouragement for the player, who may well have attracted a few new fans to the club and perhaps to Scottish women's football. One wrote: "You said you would let the football do the talking! You show them! awesome!" Another said: "Fantastic!! Go Skye, mon the Killie!!" A third said: "Ya beauty! Well done, Skye. Well done team." And a fourth replied: "This will be the best received goal of the weekend. Skye Stout scores from a free kick on her league debut (I'm sure she's got too much class to put two fingers up to the haters)." As a rival fan joked: "The only goal from Killie I'll ever cheer for." And another said: "Putting aside the fact that I'm a Saints fan and celebrating that this girl is clearly hugely talented and showing the haters what she's made of." The Chelsea Women's Supporters Group also commented: "Things you to love to to see." And former Kilmarnock captain Craig Bryson said: "Well done superb." After she was subbed off, the positive comments continued. This fan said: "Well done Skye! And indeed her team mates too." Another replied: "Well done girls and great debut Skye." Even before the game had kicked off, people on Twitter were hoping Skye would score. When Kilmarnock announced she had gone straight into the starting XI, this fan said: "Hope Stout scores a hat-trick." Another said: "It's great to see Skye Stout to be named in the squad to play her first game of the season. I wish her all best of luck. She is going to be a superstar no matter the outcome of the game and she will be a future champion in my eyes and I really mean that from the heart." And a third said: "Good luck Stout. You will smash it. I think that you will score today." The vile trolling was first brought to light by Twitter account Team Grassroots, who highlighted that the posts had been deleted by Kilmarnock just a few hours after they had gone up. They said: "Please send your love and support to 16 year old Skye Stout from Scotland. "And don't let the ignorant bullies win. Yesterday, the official page of the Scottish club Kilmarnock women's team announced that the club had signed a contract with 16-year-old midfielder Skye Stout. "A grassroots player signing her first pro contract, should have been a moment to cherish for her, however Skye was forced to endure ridicule from ignorant and disrespectful fans who began to humiliate her over her facial acne. "Things escalated to the point where the club decided to delete all posts mentioning Skye Stout in an effort to stop the bullying from haters." Their post garnered responses from Carragher, Hartson and McCoist as well as England cricket hero Kevin Pietersen, TikToker Joey Swoll and even Australian TV channel ABC Sport. Several women's football teams also sent messages of support including Newcastle United, West Ham and Exeter City. Hibs through to Premier Sports Cup quarter-finals with victory over Livingston
Hibs comfortably qualified for the quarter-finals of the Premier Sports Cup with a 2-0 victory over Livingston at the Set Fare Arena in West Lothian this afternoon. David Gray made six changes to the starting XI from the side that overcame FK Partizan in midweek. Raphael Sallinger and Miguel Chaiwa both made their competitive debuts for the Club whilst Thibault Klidjé making his first start. They were joined by Grant Hanley, Kanayo Megwa, Alasana Manneh on the bench. Jordan Smith, Dylan Levitt, Kieron Bowie, Chris Cadden, Josh Mulligan, and Rocky Bushiri all dropped down to the bench. Jamie McGrath and Joe Newell both missed out due to injury. Former Hibs player Andrew Shinnie was listed amongst the Livingston substitutes. David Martindale made two changes to the side that beat Falkirk last weekend. Daniel Finlayson and Shane Blaney came into the back four and Mo Sylla started in midfield. Danny Wilson and Graham Carey missed out after picking up knocks, while there was no place for on-loan full-back Adam Montgomery. The game kicked off in blistering conditions with Hibs as always taking a huge travelling support along the M8. The players wore their all black third kit. Hibs almost opened the scoring after 30-seconds when Klidjé tried to lob the Livi keeper Jerome Prior from 20-yards but he managed to tip the ball over for a corner. Warren O'Hora than set up Martin Boyle who raced clear down the right but his pass to Klidjé was blocked. Former Hearts' player Ryan McGowan was booked for a late challenge on Klidjé on the left wing. Klidjé was also booked moments later for a challenge on Shane Blaney. Sylla was fortunate not to join them for a tug-back on Josh Campbell and a barge on Klidjé. A third straight foul though on Campbell did result in a well deserved yellow card. In the 25th minute Campbell almost gave Hibs the lead with a powerful half-volley but Prior produced a fine save. At the other end Robbie Muirhead tried an acrobatic effort that flew well wide. Chaiwa tried his luck from distance but his effort was high then Klidjé almost got on the end of a Jordan Obita cross but the danger was cleared. Obita was booked for a pull-back near the half-way line before Manneh had a powerful volley blocked. Just before the break Hibs won a number of corners and from the third Klidjé escaped from his marker and headed home Boyle's corner from the left. After a brief VAR heck for offside the goal was given. Muirhead had an early chance in the second-half but Manneh did well to clear for a corner. On the hour mark Obita and Boyle were replaced by Nicky Cadden and Junior Hoilett. Within seconds of coming on Hoilett should have made it 2-0 after getting on the end of a perfect through ball from the impressive Klidje but he toe poked his effort wide of the post. Campbell was shown a yellow card for a foul on Sylla. Klidjé made way for Elie Youan in the 67th minute and left the field to a huge and well-deserved standing ovation from the travelling fans. Hibs almost doubled their lead when Campbell nearly got on the end of a low cross from Megwa but the ball fell to Cadden whose effort was blocked. Hanley did well to deflect a Samson Lawal shot over the bar as the hosts started to pile on the pressure for the remaining 15-minutes. On the 80th minute Campbell and Manneh ware replaced by Mulligan and Levitt. Jeremy Bokila was booked for a late challenge on Megwa. Chaiwa tried his luck from 30-yards but Prior saved easily. Lawal was then booked for a foul on Chaiwa. With four minutes left Hibs wrapped things up. A Cadden free-kick was cleared into the path of Mulligan who fired a tremendous 25-yard strike into the top right-hand corner of the net. From then Hibs managed the remainder of the game comfortably and now look forward to a quarter-final against Rangers at Ibrox. Livingston: Prior, Finlayson, Blaney, McGowan, Lawal, Sylla, Tait, Pittman, Smith, Muirhead, Winter Subs: Bokila, Hamilton, Wanner, Kabongolo, May, McLennan, Rudden, Shinnie, Yengi Hibs: Sallinger, Iredale, Hanley, O'Hora, Obita, Chaiwa, Manneh, Campbell, Klidjé Boyle Subs: Smitj, Bowie, Bushiri, C Cadden, N Cadden, Hoilett.
