India-Sri Lanka defence dialogue discusses enhancing maritime security
India and Sri Lanka explored ways to further expand their bilateral defence cooperation, especially in areas of maritime security, the island nation's defence ministry said. The deliberations took place at the Sri Lanka-India Defence Dialogue held in Colombo on Thursday. It was the first high-level meeting after India and Sri Lanka signed the first ever defence partnership on April 5. A statement from the Defence Ministry said that the Sri Lankan delegation was led by Defence Secretary Air Vice Marshal Sampath Thuyacontha (Retd), while the visiting Indian Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh led the Indian delegation. The high-level dialogue focused on strengthening bilateral defence cooperation, enhancing maritime security, and exploring new avenues for collaboration in training and strategic engagement, the statement said. Senior officials from both sides participated in the discussions, reaffirming the longstanding defence partnership between Sri Lanka and India, it said. The Indian Defence Secretary also met the Deputy Minister of Defence, Major General Aruna Jayasekara (Retd) and Thuyacontha separately. On April 5, India and Sri Lanka signed the first-ever defence partnership agreement -- firmed up during talks between visiting Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake -- signalling a major boost the the bilateral defence ties nearly four decades after the Indian Peace Keeping Force's intervention in the island nation strained the relations. The agreement will institutionalise the existing military engagement and pave the way for more structured cooperation including potential collaboration in the defence industrial sector, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri had said then.

Elon Musk's Starlink has received key approval from the Indian government, inching closer to commercial launch, news agency PTI reported quoting sources. This approval clears a major hurdle that had kept the company waiting for nearly two is now the third company to get this kind of licence from the Department of Telecommunications (DoT). The other two are Eutelsat's OneWeb and Reliance Jio's satellite arm. This means Starlink can now prepare to offer high-speed internet in India using its satellite network, reported had applied for the licence back in 2022, but the process was delayed due to various concerns, including national security. Meanwhile, Amazon's satellite project, Kuiper, is still waiting for its own approval from the Indian Starlink and Reliance Jio had a difference of opinion over how India should allocate spectrum, the radio waves needed for satellite communication. Jio wanted it to be auctioned, like with mobile networks, while Starlink argued it should be directly assigned without bidding. In the end, the Indian government agreed with Starlink's there's no official statement yet from Starlink or the DoT, this move could bring affordable internet access to remote and rural parts of India where traditional networks struggle to reach. The tech billionaire — who exited his role as a top White House advisor just last week — alleged on Thursday that the Republican leader is featured in secret government files on rich and powerful former Epstein associates. The Trump administration has acknowledged it is reviewing tens of thousands of documents, videos, and investigative material that his 'MAGA' movement says will unmask public figures complicit in Epstein's crimes. 'Time to drop the really big bomb: (Trump) is in the Epstein files,' Musk posted on X, as a growing feud with the president boiled over into a vicious public spat. Last month, a court said OpenAI had to preserve and segregate all output log data after the Times asked for the data to be preserved. 'We will fight any demand that compromises our users' privacy; this is a core principle,' OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said in a post on X on Thursday. U.S. District Judge Sidney Stein was asked to vacate the May data preservation order on June 3, a court filing showed. The New York Times did not immediately respond to a request for comment outside regular business hours. The newspaper sued OpenAI and Microsoft in 2023, accusing them of using millions of its articles without permission to train the large language model.
