Archer & Cartwright seal vital Brave win over Fire
Southern Brave revived their Hundred campaign after three straight defeats with a crucial four-run win over Welsh Fire at Sophia Gardens. The game was in the balance, with Fire needing 16 from the last 10 balls, but Tom Kohler-Cadmore was caught off James Coles for 25 to dent the hosts' hopes. Matt Henry then needed a six from the final ball to win but only managed a single as Chris Jordan held his nerve, with Fire finishing 125-8 and Jofra Archer taking 3-20.Hilton Cartwright's unbeaten 51 off just 19 balls proved the difference after Brave's innings had been floundering at 71-5 from 71 balls when he came in at number seven.Cartwright pummelled five sixes in his knock as Brave recovered to 129-8 on a slow surface against Fire, whose hopes of qualifying for the knockouts are all-but over, with just one win from five matches. Fire started positively with the ball as New Zealand seamer Matt Henry bowled the second-most economical spell in The Hundred men's compettion with 2-5 - Brave crawling to 18-1 after the powerplay. James Vince's 29 was the only notable contribution from the top order as Chris Green and David Payne also took two wickets each for Fire. In contrast, Fire made an explosive start with 46-3 from their first 25 balls as Jonny Bairstow started aggressively, whacking 22 from 10 balls before he was dismissed by Craig Overton.Archer then removed Steve Smith for 13 before adding Luke Wells and Paul Walter to his tally as Fire's middle order buckled under the pressure. The win takes Brave to third in the table while Fire remain bottom.

Transfer news live: Arsenal hijack Eze deal, Newcastle's Wissa bid rejected, Chelsea to sign Enciso, Isak latest
Arsenal are set to steal Eberechi Eze from Tottenham's grasp after acting decisively following a major injury blow to Kai Havertz. The Gunners moved quickly after the news that Havertz damaged his knee in their win over Manchester United, and look set to complete a transfer worth around £68m including add-ons, leaving their north London rivals still searching for a new attacker as the deadline looms. Manchester City winger Savinho remains a target for Spurs. Alexander Isak's explosive statement this week accused Newcastle United of 'broken promises' and 'lost trust', with Liverpool still strongly linked with a move for the Swedish striker. The Reds' offer of £110m fell short of Newcastle's valuation and the North East club issued a statement of their own saying conditions for a sale were unlikely to be met before the transfer window deadline. Newcastle have missed out on a raft of strikers and their latest bid, offering £40m to Brentford for Yoane Wissa, has also been rejected. Elsewhere, Manchester United continue to endure frustration with their goalkeeper situation, and could yet rival Manchester City for Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma, while striker Rasmus Hojlund could be on his way to Napoli. Chelsea are closing in on Brighton winger Julio Enciso and are still working on a deal for United's Alejandro Garnacho, Leeds are set to announce AC Milan's Noah Okafor, and Nottingham Forest are close to completing a deal for Douglas Luiz from Nottingham Forest. Arsenal swoop to sign Eze from under Spurs' noses We start with the stunning news that Arsenal have hijacked Tottenham's move to sign Eberechi Eze from Crystal Palace. Eze had seemed increasingly likely to join Spurs over recent days, as chair Daniel Levy negotiated with his counterpart Steve Parish over the finer details of the deal. Eze had indicated that he was keen to join Tottenham and Palace had been searching for a replacement. But that picture changed yesterday after Arsenal discovered the extent of Kai Havertz's injury, pushing the Gunners into action. They are not only prepared to match Tottenham's offer of around £60m, but are also prepared to make faster payments that appeal to Palace as they try to find their search for a new attacker. 'Diabetes hit like a brick' - Scotland's Stewart
Rugby World Cup 2025 Pool B: Scotland v WalesWhen: Saturday 23 August Venue: Salford Community Stadium Kick-off: 14:45 BSTCoverage: Watch on BBC One & iPlayer, listen on BBC Sounds, follow updates via BBC Sport app and website. Alex Stewart did not feel like the same player, nor the same person, who had burst onto the Test scene in such impressive fashion during the 2024 Women's Six tough tackling back-row, whose game is built on physicality and work rate, could not understand why her normally reliable engine suddenly seemed to be running on was until she received a medical diagnosis which, in her own words, "hit me like a brick".During this year's Six Nations, the 21-year-old was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes and coeliac disease."It took a couple of months of real tiredness and feeling really lethargic going to training, not feeling myself, kind of low moods and things like that, which kind of edged me to speak to the doctors a bit more," Stewart told the BBC's Scotland Rugby Podcast."I was losing a lot of weight as well, which is obviously due to the diabetes."One blood test can tell you a whole lot and a whole lot that I didn't really expect to come back from it. I thought I was maybe a bit deficient in iron or something like that, but no, it was a massive shock." Stewart admits she was in a state of denial about her new circumstances as she processed the news, but says she is now tackling it head on and learning more about the adjustments she needs to make to her diet and nutrition in order to get back to peak comes with its own challenges, as those with diabetes and coeliac disease will testify."It's a massive adjustment," says Stewart. "Eating out is really difficult and even just going over to friends."You don't want to impose and be like, 'oh, is it gluten-free, is it not?' So it's definitely different."I'm trying not to view myself as a problem for everyone else to deal with, but definitely trying to find nice options for gluten-free is quite difficult. Cakes and stuff aren't quite the same."So it's quite mentally draining, but I've got loads of people around me to help me, like the nutritionist and the medical team. So I'm everyone's little project and everyone's loving pitching in and stuff like that."I'm getting back to myself, getting a bit more colour and training well. So definitely feeling more like the Alex Stewart that I was a year ago." A fit and firing Alex Stewart will be a valuable asset as Scotland look to make it out the pool at the Rugby World opening match against Wales in Salford on 23 August could be the critical one to their chances, and Stewart says the prospect of playing in her first World Cup provided her with much-needed motivation in those low moments as she came to terms with her health issues."It was a massive pull through and definitely a drive to not spend a lot of time in denial about these diagnoses," she said."I think I would have spent a lot of time in denial because that's sort of just the person I am, but I needed to sort it out and sort it out really fast. "So I'm happy where I am going into this World Cup and I'm happy that I'm feeling a lot stronger and physically fit."I think we're definitely going as competitors and we want to give Wales a really good go. We've got the latter stages of the World Cup in our sights and we just need to go out and play our best."
