
Jobless man in Sibu jailed, ordered caned for handbag theft

SIBU (June 18): An unemployed man was sentenced by the Magistrates' Court here today to seven months in prison and one stroke of the cane for stealing a handbag.
Magistrate Oon Kork Chern convicted Hafiz Dollah, 33, on his own guilty plea to a charge under Section 380 of the Penal Code, which provides imprisonment for up to 10 years and a fine, upon conviction.
For subsequent offences, the Section also provides for whipping in addition to imprisonment and a fine.
Hafiz committed the offence at an eatery along Jalan Bengkel here at around 4pm on June 14, 2025.
According to the facts of the case, the victim – a foreign worker – was dining at the eatery when the accused grabbed her handbag from off the table.
She screamed for help and several members of the public chased after the accused, eventually apprehending him at Sibu Central Market and handing him over to the police.
The prosecution was conducted by ASP Siti Mariyah Dahari, while Hafiz was unrepresented.

Woman fined RM2,000 for purchasing illegal lottery at Jln Landeh

Magistrate Syarifah Fatimah Azura Wan Ali imposed the fine on Wong Shi Qing after she pleaded guilty to a charge under Section 9(1) of the Common Gaming Houses Act 1953. The Section carries a fine not exceeding RM5,000 or a jail term for up to six months or both, upon conviction. Wong committed the offence at an eatery at Jalan Landeh here at around 12.45pm on March 1, 2025. Based on the facts of the case, a police team raided the premises during an Op Dadu operation and arrested Wong for suspected involvement in illegal lottery activities. Former Rela personnel gets 30 years, 12 strokes for murder
Photo for illustration purposes only. – Photo from KOTA KINABALU (June 18): The Court of Appeal here on Wednesday sentenced a former Rela personnel to 30 years' jail plus 12 whippings for murdering his friend during a drinking session in Kudat six years ago. Justice Dato' Hj Azman Abdullah, who sat together with Justices Datuk Azhahari Kamal Ramli and Datuk Noorin Badaruddin, unanimously substituted the death sentence imposed on Donny @ Mohd Nazmie Musanna, 45, with jail and whipping punishment and affirmed his conviction. The jail term will be counted from the date of his arrest on March 27, 2019. On December 7, 2022, a High Court here sentenced Donny to death penalty after he was found guilty of committing the crime against Ampukir Aladau, 64, at the Tomborungus Tamu area in Kudat on March 26, 2019. Donny, who was represented by counsel Amli Nohin, was convicted under Section 302 of the Penal Code.
